do you really follow Wenyen's brother on twitter?

The actual quote was “The reason to think about it is if he’s going to get drafted high enough,” older brother Komot Gabriel said. “If that’s not the case, you’re looking for something that’s guaranteed. And if that’s not the case, then he doesn’t want to risk that.”

Read more here: http://www.kentucky.com/sports/coll...tball-men/article208521289.html#storylink=cpy

So, matt Jones actually did misquote the article. Why the other poster said “tifwiw” when he could have just linked the same article, I have no idea.

Matt Jones needs to stop reporting ****. His "wrong" rate is WAY too high.

And the rest of y'all need to stop reading too much into this. Wenyen's tweet doesn't mean he's leaving..or staying. My guess is he's still undecided. Instead, its' only purpose is to let us know that Matt Jones' tweet is ********.
He was right about SKJ. And that story wasn’t even written by Jones.

Gabe is a smart guy. He isn't going anywhere. His old coach said he plans on seeing him at Ky for his Jr year and that Gabe hasn't talked about leaving at all. Of course it's Gabe's dream to play in the NBA, but he isn't projected in the top 60. He can graduate in 3 years if he stays and has a good shot at the first round next year. This years draft is loaded and next years is horrible. For example they have Bolden as a first round pick next year if that gives you an idea. Also hasn't the poor family thing been debunked already? As far as I know his family boast a bunch of college grads.

Gabe plays big minutes and that was with a top class of 8 freshman this year. He isn't going to be scared off by 5 more. If he was a first round pick I'm sure he would go. As far as overseas he loves his family and that would put him completely out of touch with them compared to now. Gabe comes back and graduates and is a first round pick next year.

I keep seeing references to WG going because his family is poor and they need the money. I have yet to see any documentation that would lead me to believe that he has to leave because of this alleged issue. Can someone please post a link, tweet, instagram, face book page, letter, or anything that proves this alleged issue. Pretty Please. Someone started a post last year alleging this, but no one so far has provided any sources or documentation.

I won’t lie I love having WG on our team. That said, he’d also have my complete support to do whatever is best for him personally- not that it matters I’m sure.. We all care about our team and winning, but there are life situations that we really don’t have insight into. We are always quick to judge “not ready or making a huge mistake”. The answer is we really can’t appreciate their situation so we should just support them all and wish them the best regardless of what they decide to do.

I always think about former players or players that are in the league advising players they should stay one more year.

The reason I find it flawed is because they are already secure in the knowledge they've made their money.

As a older man now I'd certainly advise my 20 year old self to be more patient, to put in the time, but would my 20 year old self choose to go to college another year and take more classes if I could graduate immediately? would I take the lower paying job with better OTJ than the high paying job knowing student loans are kicking in?

My point is the perspective *after* you have made it is much different than before.

I'm also not sure that parental income has as much bearing as we believe when it comes to staying another year. Leaving early yes, staying because there is no immediate need for income? I don't think that factors much into it at all. Its a financial decision on the potential earning power of the player. Is it great for another year of playing college ball? the same? or less?

Matt Jones and his team have to fill up a blog with 6-12 blog entries a day along with "breaking news" which is in part obtained by scouring the internet - twitter, blogs, facebook, sports sites, beat writers - and filtering it down into the funnel of being UK related

They then have to determine how that information will be received and the reaction of BBN - all in the name of being a profitable website

Being right isn't as important as being interesting. I'm not really a Jones hater or supporter. But I've always been interested in the influence he , now mostly indirectly thru his website, has on BBN. If you think about it, its not really all that different than conservatives watching Fox, Liberals watching MSNBC and Duke fans watching ***** Eye for the Straight Guy (sorry, I know that isn't politically correct in today's world, but that would have been funny in 1992)

Gabriel is the type of player Cal needs to stop losing to the pros. I don't care any way you slice it, a kid like Gabriel wouldn't leave any other school in America if he was on their roster or would even be considering it, I can live with SKG leaving, I could even live with Green leaving but a kid like Gabriel is exactly who we need on this team. A veteran presence you can rely on early in the season and late in the tourney to come down and knock down some shots when things get tough. A guy that's been through it. It will be two years in a row we've lost a fringe guy to probably overseas. (Humphries) I will be pretty depressed if we lose Gabriel.

Its a good point. Its also the downside of the Kentucky Effect that we see so much as an entity attached to our program.

Gabriel didn't choose any other school most likely for the very reason he thought he'd leave for the NBA faster than anywhere else. Now's he is staring down the barrel of a Junior year, year 3 at UK, which by the unwritten rules of the Kentucky Effect translates into you being a failure as a OAD. Afterall, its not 3 and done's we're chasing at UK.

I believe there is a perception that some schools advise/pressure/convince - whatever descriptions you want to use - kids into playing another year - kids who may have made the decision to jump at UK. I don't believe that perception is wrong.

In the case of UNC, that perception has hurt their ability to recruit one and done kids. May have hurt UL too.

It's already happened. Orton averaged 3 and 3 and went in the first round.

And what did Dakari average his sophomore year?

Found it. 6.4 and 4.6. But at least he was likely to be drafted.

I will say if I were a Gm id be more intrigued by Wenyen than Dakari. Dakari was a 7 footer that played below the rim and got stuffed at the basket repeatedly his sophomore year and was a huge liability on defense because he lacked the lateral quickness to defend pick n roll.

Wenyen doesn't have the same physical limitations and has a skill that is at a major premium in the league and always will be.

Wenyen can’t guard on perimeter whatsoever.

People are reading this the wrong way.
The point is somewhat moot, as he will not be a first round pick— but his intent was two fold:

1) make clear his brother did not make that statement

2) express that he has not made a decision to leave even if a first round selection.

Now, I don’t believe that latter - but I also don’t think it will be relevant. But he doesn’t want the perception to be that he is/was hoping to leave and didn’t have the opportunity.

Keep telling yourself that. These are the excuses we make up on here and in our head to excuse a kid for leaving. Just like with Humphries. All of a sudden, "he's homesick" was the reason the kid went back to Australia to play in the pros. Look, I love where we are as a program and I think if we lose Gabriel, this team will still compete for a FF if we get Washington and Vanderbilt back, However, I think a kid like Gabriel could be a cog piece to put this team over the top and really get a shot at a title. Just like having Humphries this year, probably would have gotten us a few more W's with Richard's struggles and Vanderbilt's injury. Maybe even would have put us over the top against a team like K-State.

Only at UK, you are considered a failure if you make it to your junior year. That's not Cal's fault but it is what it is and he needs to figure out a way to change that attitude.

Of PJ, Vando, and Gabe... I want Gabe back the most. Then PJ. Don’t get me wrong, I think we absolutely need Vando back but not sure how much he’ll actually play. Gabriel gives us a big hat can shoot well from the perimeter, plays hard, plays with enthusiasm, all that.

Really hope they all come back but hearing that we’re still revcruting means someone has told Cal they are leaving.

I don’t think Humphries was “homesick” necessarily however I think he thought to
Himself “well damn, I can go play for
My home country and make a solid 6 figures at the age of 19”

Cal is not telling WG it's time to go because of Montgomery... c'mon now.
I find it EXTREMELY unlikely that Cal is encouraging him to go at all, much less just for the reason that he has Montgomery now. If Gabriel leaves it’s one of those “staying in school is the best thing for you but I’ll support you either way” instances.

Exactly. Jones tried to sensationalize what was said. Wenyens response was just as likely disagreeing that Jones interpretation was accurate as it was disagreeing with him needed to be a first rounder.

He was right about SKJ. And that story wasn’t even written by Jones.

No. Just like Quade it was common sense to think these kids want more pt and see that somewhere else. That wasn't some inside info.

He once had best info out there. there has been out of info for the last few years. He completely whiffed on all recruiting info. It's pretty clear he's just guessing at this point. That's when he isn't aggregating/stealing stuff from other sources.

I thought i read that four of his siblings had graduated college. Ok, if you have four siblings that have graduated college, and they are waiting on you to go earn 50k in the G-League or 80-90k overseas to support them ?? That whole "take care of family now" story is BS. He will not make anymore then any of the four college grads if they had any kind degree at all.

Why haven't Wenyen's family starved to death already? They've obviously gone without food for the past two years.

I remember taking out a student loan once and sending the money home. That was so dumb, I should have become a basketball player instead.

So why have we had guys like Briscoe, Dakari, Lee, SKG leave/transfer when they easily could of stayed? Briscoe and Darkari both knew they weren't going to be first rounders. Hell, even the Harrison Twins, knew they weren't going 1st round and they left. Even though I agreed with them leaving when they did. You can call it an opinion but the only 2 Cal recruited guys that have made it to their Senior year were both born in this state and raised Kentucky fans. There is a cloud around this program that says if you aren't gone by your Junior year you are considered a failure. Like I said, I don't blame Cal and it's likely perpetrated by the media and other schools but it's there. I get it, you're a lawyer. You argue for the sake of arguing if things aren't 100% pro positive Cal and UK but losing the fringe guys that Cal tried to bring in for 4 years is tiring and he needs to change that.

While Gabe isn't being projected in the Top 100, I do think he would play a big role on UK's team this next year.. Cal made numerous comments late in the season, that WG had finally found his role and how his confidence was so much higher than earlier in the season and his minutes went up and his role expanded proving that to be true. With his outside shot coming around, he was huge down the stretch run. I truly believe if he returns, he'll get 25 or more minutes a game and be a double digit scorer. Throw in his work ethic and knack for being in the right places on the court, and doing the dirty work, I think he would work himself into the draft next year as a late 1st rounder, early 2nd rounder, at worse. While that doesn't guarantee he will stick in the NBA, it would guarantee him a lot more money than he could expect to receive anywhere by leaving now. WG gives me the impression he's a pretty sharp guy and if he's as smart as I perceive him to be, I think he ultimately opts to return and that's the best decision he could make, imo.. I could honestly see him in the Knox role on next years team and I don't see Vandy or EJM having much impact on his minutes, because WG can play the 5, 4, 3 or even the 2 spot with his range and versatility.

Regarding WG - I remember watching a special on the SEC Network last year. WG was the featured UK male athlete on the special. He was asked about his thoughts about not being a OAD after his freshman season. He said that he loved UK and that it was the best place for him to be. He proceeded to say that he would remain at UK until his game developed enough to make the jump, whether it be one, two, three or four years. He said he wasn't in any rush. Basically said he was gonna stick it out and roll with the punches at UK. Take it FWIW.

What any of those players do has nothing to do with Gabriel’s decision. Each kid makes their decision based on the circumstances in their life. It’s ridiculous to say Gabriel is leaving UK because of the perception of players who stay longer are failures. That is just flat out wrong.

If we lose a guy to the nba or overseas that averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds that's mind boggling

The Kentucky Effect

Used to mean being able to get you into the 1st round, or at least the NBA in general, as quickly as possible.

Now it just means kids want the hell out as quickly as possible regardless of draft stock.
