What grade would you give the Fred this season? Factoring in...
-late hire
- cupboard bare
-late recruiting
- toughest league

One thing I believe.....he needs a talent surge where these starters are next years backups

Grade from me? C

Well you can see his concepts and how it can strain a defense. He actually has some well designed plays. Doc can coach defense.

Question is, can he bring in the talent to run it?

If they can get some shooters and a athletic big, they will be fun to watch

We are exactly what I expected us to be with the given talent. Can't give Hoiberg any higher due to the terrible record. But can't give him any lower due to what he inherited.

Agree. D-. Only thing keeping it from F is that it's their first year.

from what we are hearing, next year SHOULD be better. But, we will wait and see.

how ridiculous Cam Mack can lead the league in assists while the team finishes dead last in fg%

we get the most open looks in the conference due entirely to Fred and Mack. he can't coach the ball into the hoop.

still can't believe Hoiberg is patrolling our sideline. what a coup by Moos.

What if I don’t want to give him a grade since he only had one returning player from last year and quickly having to fill in the rest?

We all knew this year would be brutal, so I can't see being MORE disappointed be cause it was even worse than we thought. The two freshman alone trying to match up with Big 10 bigs was a recipe for disaster. The FT shooting is really the only thing that bothers me, but I almost think that's a sign of how difficult this season has been mentally for these kids. The fact that they've pretty much showed up and competed every game is impressive.

Pretty disappointed in how a guard dominated team could be so horrible at FT shooting and missing at point-blank range. I did like seeing them get out in transition, but they were abysmal at finishing. 3-point shooting was OK.

To me, getting to 10-12 wins would have been average with all the turnover of the roster. D+

Right, he is a good coach and he has proven he can win. As you said can he get the talent here that he needs to be successful?
You can have a world class, 5 star chef in the kitchen but if he only has access to water and flour he isn't going to be able to accomplish much.
As far as a grade, have to go with a D. Unlike Frost these are all his guys he picked. Yes I agree he had a short window to pull them in, but to only get 7 wins is pretty pathetic. Just having a guy like Cam should be good for at least 10.

My grade would be a I for incomplete or in golf you take a mulligan. They were so close early in the conference season lost to Indiana in ot. I think they physically and mentally wore out.

True but did Fred coach defense? Let's take a look......

NE average points scored against: National Rank #326
NE defensive field goal percentage: National Rank #250

The Huskers are allowing opponents a staggering 76.6 ppg this season - exceptionally bad among all Division 1 teams and the worst, by far, of all B10 teams. His defense was poor to marginally bad early on then got significantly worse.

I can appreciate consideration for lack of talent/skill sufficient to make your offense (and specifically, scoring) produce as expected. Defense, however, is more about attitude and effort. Hoiberg utterly failed to coach and/or inspire minimal defensive competence - that alone deserves an F grade.

It is a 5 year project.
I agree... it is 5 years or more. Because we need historical perspective here. Where NU basketball is concerned I would say it is an 80 year and still ongoing project. We stink. We have always stunk. We are THE WORST P5 basketball program in the country and we are also a worse program, historically, than lots of non P5 schools. Judge Hoiberg after one year in the face of the sheer horribleness that has been NU hoops for decades and decades and decades and decades? I laugh. Hoiberg has proven that he is a very good coach. He has proven he can succeed. The man needs to be given a very long leash indeed. As in a 7 or 8 year leash. Because you can say all he has to do is recruit well over the next few years and we will be back, but that is precisely the problem. How do you recruit to this train wreck of a program?? Hopefully, we will keep some of that Omaha talent at NU this year. But I am not holding my breath.

Grade: Incomplete.

I always give all first year coaches a pass. In the second year & 3rd year I look for continued improvement. By the 4th&5th year I am hoping they are good and am more critical.

Can effort add 20lbs and 3+ inches in 4 months to every guy who’s never played B1G hoops before?

They struggled to guard the rim for the same reason they struggled to score at the rim. They’ll also finish at or near the top of the league in steals.

The answer isn’t effort, bud. Leave these lazy takes in your otherwise empty skull.

LOL all of those opponent made shots didn't happen at the rim. You can't rationalize your way out of a defense ranked 350. Hoiberg has to own that.

What is empty-headed is awarding Fred an above average grade for a last place finish and accomplishing the worst winning percentage of any Nebraska team since 1944.

I totally disagree. I think most games they were compensating for lack of interior size by doubling on bigs. Left a lot of shooters open and we got punished. When you're totally lacking in one area and are forced to "cheat" to compensate, the best basketball conf in the country will make you pay. I thought the effort was good all year with a few spots/games that were exceptions.

Banton, Allen, Lak, Walker, Stevenson will make this a completely diff team next season. Basketball can turn around quickly since only 5 guys on the floor at a time.

I am not too worried. Kentucky lost to Evansville, North Carolina lost to Wofford, and It is Fred's 1st year. So, I think we will be fine. What we did see was flashes of what will be. This is going to be a fun ride. GBR!!!!

Yvan is 17, he's 6'9", and he had 19 rebounds in a Big 10 game. It's not all negative. He's a potential beast.

This is true but Hoiberg also got rid of all our players but one. He then went and got a bunch of kids that can't make layups, shoot from the chairity stripe or hit 3's so I don't think he should get a free pass. I liked Hoiberg's concepts and all but was hoping to see more individual talent growth more so than # wins.
