The big name SEC schools miss on recruits too. Most of their cast-offs we have added through the portal have proven that.

Maybe we should start taking their word for it instead of all this sloppy seconds business?

Sherman and Wynn have done relatively well, I suppose, but we’ve had just as many impactful no-name FCS transfers as big time SEC transfers.

Coming from someone who grew up in Nebraska and lived all over Florida for 10-12 years… The culture shock (especially for south Florida kids) is immense. 1st… their public education system is probably a year + behind most northern high schools curriculum wise. So they are usually coming in at a disadvantage academically. Professors and classmates are operating at an academic level they’re not accustomed to. Couple that with the very flashy, esthetic and money oriented culture of south Florida and this place (many places north of the mason dixon) can be very difficult to navigate for kid from Dade county.

People up here are willing to work harder for less money and/or recognition. We are focused on and value different things, and many south Florida kids want the people and place(s) around them to be more like south Florida or have a respect for south Florida culture that just doesn’t exist outside of where they grew up. Long story short… the places are as different as two places can be within the same country.

I expect much fewer reaches on transfer dudes who accomplished little at “better” programs in the future.

That first class for Rhule…he deserved and probably needed to take a couple shots.

Hey Kong, I seem to remember a convo when we got Gilbert. If memory serves which it often doesn’t, you were pro and I was con.

I do agree, we need to be very selective. Wonder if anyone has an accurate Talley on this?

you're probably right. I thought it was worth a shot

when I saw how fat and disinterested he was in the spring game, I wrote over and over that I didn't expect him to contribute.

Not sure the curriculum issue is relevant when most of them major in "communications"

I can't help but think there are unexpected riches in the FCS. Kids who bloom late.

For every Gilbert there’s a Trey Palmer.

I won’t blame Rhule too much for Collier. Not every commit is going to workout. Even the transfers. But MJ Sherman, Chief Borders, Jeudy did just fine last year. All from $Ec schools and pretty big recruits out of HS. Bet they continue to contribute and play well going forward. I think the 2023 transfer class is actually pretty solid

Of course there are. Trey Lance would have taken AMs job eventually. Carson Wentz would have saved Bo’s job. Dallas Godert is better than any TE we’ve had recently if not ever. Danny Woodhead was better than 5 star Marlon.

But it’s just harder to find those guys.

Yeah, well I grew up in Nebraska, went college in Ohio, and then moved to Florida with 3 of my brothers who I played ball with. We all moved to Florida after college, they worked in education and coached football for Dr. Phillips High before it was a HS “powerhouse”. They helped usher that school to the top of the Orlando area. My best friend and roommate trained, mentored and coached Chirs Johnson into an NFL leading rusher. All while I went to school to work in the golf industry. I tell you all this so you will understand that I am speaking from 100% first hand experience. I used to play Madden football against Chris Johnson in my apartment.

So my point is… My brothers who grew up in Ohio and now work in Florida (for 20+ years) in education and coaching will all tell you that public schools in Florida are at least a year behind most northern public schools by roughly a year curriculum wise. The reasons for this are complicated and nuanced. Massive amounts of non-English speaking children/students that make teaching difficult. Overwhelming population growth coupled with not enough funding to account for the ever growing and changing demographics. Long story short… (according to my friends who are/were teachers and coaches in the Florida public school system) You are learning, as a HS senior in Florida, what most students are learning as juniors in many northern public schools. And as a very close 1st/2nd hand observer that seems to be pretty accurate.

I know this may be hard to accept for someone (anyone) who has lived in the south for most of their life. But it’s a reality, and a problem we’ve accepted, because nobody knows what to do about it.

Sorry about the long rant, but I have a unique and intimate understanding of this “issue” that can’t be properly explained in a couple sentences.

Dr Phillips high is trash because the surrounding area they have to take in. Smart parents live in winter park, Windermere, Seminole county, or Avalon if they care about their kids education

Well, some people don’t have a choice. But the facts remain the same.

Interesting. It's a little eye-opening because Nebraska is pretty far behind the times as far as education goes as well. I grew up in Colorado before moving back to Nebraska for Middle School. I was almost a grade an a half ahead of everyone and spent the rest of my time in either upper classes or doing distance learning until I graduated. I imagine there are ****** schools everywhere that can make a system look worse than it really is.

Guys like Sherman and Wynn were literally "sloppy seconds."

Guys like Hood and Collier were "sloppy 5ths." There is a big distinction to be made there.

All you have to do is make a quick search of state ACT or SAT scores. They aren’t perfect as how many students take the test does matter but the overall scores per state are valid. Wisconsin is up there along with Wyo, Kansas and Nebraska. Florida not so good.

My wife was forced to take SAT in English when you she first moved here . Lot of kids do which drag down the scores. She’s now a MD.

Florida ranks #1 in education. Just a fact kid.

Do the areas these “Smart parents” are living in have the same or lower cost of living as the “trash” district?

Seminole county and Avalon areas are cheap.

Not a lot of two-parent households in the trash school districts. They get as much or more funding than the a-rated schools. Not a money problem my socialist friend

I lived there, to some degree I suppose there’s some discrepancies between cost of living, but that’s not exactly the issue IMO. The issue is income. Dr. Phillips HS is located right on the cusp of a very low income area of Orlando. It’s actually right next to Universal Studios. You go one direction and you have pretty nice areas. (very commercial, universal studios and many businesses) You go the other direction you have a very poor/low income area of town. People there can’t afford to move or access the transportation needs to enroll their children in a better school, and many parents don’t have the education or background to care or even know they have other options.

But that’s not really the point. The curriculum gap exists throughout the Florida public school system. It might be slightly better at some schools than others, but it’s universally widespread throughout the state. (Public schools) And Florida isn’t alone with this. Many/most southern schools are behind northern schools curriculum wise.
