Numbers in ICU & on Ventilators continuing to improve though

330-340 in ICU 8/06 - 8/10 & 260 now down 20%
+/- 200 on vents 8/8 - 8/13 & 150 now down 25%
We are going to have to deal with this damned ***** for a while, but it looks like either the virus is getting weaker and/or individuals that are younger with stronger immune systems are testing positive.
Wear a damned mask & wash your damned hands.

They'll grow even more in the next week or two since, in Alabama at least, high school football has started, and many private schools are having in-person classes.

City of Madison thought it was the perfect time to have a fair at the new baseball stadium.

Bunch of geniuses we have running things.

According to Mayor Finley, it wasn't the city, it was the Trash Pandas. He's not too thrilled with it being held and I see his point.

I live very close to the stadium and have heard zero noise from the carnival. I expected it to be noisy. The periodic fireworks I can hear very well. We have a pretty good view from our deck.

Not surprising to see a little uptick in cases with school starting back. The key is going to be that it doesn't get out of control the next few weeks.

Tell me more about positivity rate, hospitalizations, and ICU utilization. Those are the real indicators.

More testing = more cases.

More testing = more cases.

You have the same number of cases whether you test or not, you just have more known cases if you increase testing. And there has not been an increase in testing. We have actually decreased testing because doctors are starting to order less due to the delays in getting results. Hospitalizations are a better indicator of serious illness with the virus but with it starting to spread through younger people now it doesn't really paint the picture of spread as they are far less likely to be hospitalized (although some still do, and some still die, and some suffer long term effects).

In the mean time, states like Georgia and Florida continued their consistent downward trend. Illinois has a steady climb and Hawaii a much steeper one even though they have restrictions that would cause an uprising down here.

New Zealand just extended their lockdown again. S Korea had its worst week since February.

Meanwhile in that a Nordic country that shall remain nameless, they have 22 in ICU total and life is almost normal.

Are NZ, Hawaii etc really going to keep doing this until their is a vaccine?

The US had its lowest weekly total since June.

Serious question, I thought New Zealand claimed to be Covid free recently? All kinds of movies were going over there to film recently because this was the case.

Yes they were free of it for a few months or something. Then a small cluster showed up 2 weeks ago and last I saw they hadnt figured out where it came from.
That place has some pretty strict policies for covid- way more extreme than I would have guessed for a Commonwealth country.

Pretty sure the Trash Pandas are desperate for any and all revenue at this point, given their debut season in a brand spanking new ballpark didn’t even happen. They’ve had some sort of event at the stadium just about every weekend.

But it allowed them to completely reopen the economy after a short shutdown.

Many on here are willing to kill people for a fully open economy, New Zealand did it without that.

Quarantined all visitors and shut down completely for 4 weeks.
grocery stores, pharmacies, hospitals, and petrol stations were the only commerce allowed; vehicle travel was restricted; and social interaction was limited to within households.

After that 4 week shutdown, they opened back up. And were playing Rugby with 35,000 fans in the stands in June.

How many on here wish we had done that instead of what we did?

You do know that Nordic country, despite popular belief, actually did quite a lot to stop the spread. Unlike us their people actually followed their guidelines quite well. That means they probably really did MORE than we did, because we as individuals haven't done much at all compared to the rest of the world. Half their population has been in the country for six weeks too. We will see what happens when their six weeks vacation ends and they are all back at work.

Yep. It would be hard to do here. It's much easier to do it on an island with small, homogenous population.

5 million left the country for 6 weeks? Gotta link for that claim?

No, good grief. Read it again. Half the country is on vacation IN the country, as in the countryside, during July and August. Something like 20% of them own country houses, and they get six weeks off every summer. Literally almost half of them are on vacation in July and August. Go to Stockholm in the summer sometime.

So numbers should be exploding in the rural areas, right?

It is easier on a island with a small population, but not undoable here. Maybe, we would not have gone to 0 cases thanks to the "caint nobody tel me what to do"/ Q anon Crowd... But we'd be better than we are now.

Demographics tell us New Zealand is LESS homogeneous than the USA.

New Zealand is ~70% white, ~ 15% natives, and 15% Asian

The US is 73% white, 13% black, 5% Asian, 9% other/mixed.

Since 2008 New Zealand has welcomed immigration. 27% of the population was born somewhere besides New Zealand. That has changed from the New Zealand before 2008 when it was more Homogenous.

Exactly this. Rural hospitals there and not seeing a spike.. of course they are down to 22 ICU in the whole country. Apparently those people who have second homes don’t get together, eat out etc. Wonder why Michigan prohibited that??

Florida must be sending their people to summer homes as well. ER visits with Covid like symptoms down 75% since July 7. Lowest hospital admissions since July 7. Hospitalizations down 50%.

New Zealand just extended their lockdown FWIW. Are we advocating shutting down all borders and a constant stop start till it is gone?

Check out the charts for IL and Hawaii.

View attachment 17404View attachment 17405

And what L4’s fails to admit, cases were on a steep decline before the people of Sweden went on the Ted Kaczynski getaway.

Florida’s chart (similar lockdown status to Sweden) looks very similar. You also need to add a bar for today’s low case count.

Take a look at Hospitalization numbers in Sweden. It shows that cases were dropping rapidly even sooner than the daily new cases data. L4 has a point about the Swedes going on vacation because that is something they do, but he fails to consider that that might not be the only explanation and also ignores similar trends seen in USA states.

I see your spelling is, as usual, spot on. And, although I consider it personal information, I use a hundred pound feed sack and a length of wench cable.
