We Will Dance in 2020

this team has been slowly yet surely maturing and getting better as the season goes on. We might not see it in the W-L column but make no mistake, “getting old” in the big ten does wonders for teams.

Guys like Tez, Myles, Caleb and Ron getting good minutes and only graduating Shaq D and adding two very fine basketball players in jacob young and paul mulcahy is going to do wonders for this team.

Look at Iowa as an example. Last season they went 14-19 (4-14) and everyone said, “iowa’s young this year but dont discount their youth getting experience helping them big time in the 2018-2019 season”. Now theyre a top 25 team who has knocked off teams like Michigan this year. All they did was get older and added just one really good freshman guard who can shoot the lights out in wieskamp.

I think by a simple virtue of us “getting older” and adding two really good players in young and mulcahy that we will dance next year. My only concern quite honestly is keeping players happy with playing time. Of the current guards on the roster 2-3 will be very unhappy with imo at least 2 being completely regulated to the bench

Next year at the 1-4 theres 160 minutes to be split between

Geo- 27
Young- 26
Montez- 22
Mulcahy- 22
Harper- 20
Mcconnell- 15
Eugene- 28

And then Shaq C and Myles split 40 mins at the 5

My guess is Kiss and Issa are pretty much worked out of the rotation. Those 7 above splitting 160 minutes between the 1-4 spot id say is in the top half of the conference imo.

what usually happens if that the top 2 players will play over 30 minutes...i would be shocked if Eugene and Geo played under 30

KYK I would agree with you if we also add a small forward who can shoot. Maybe that comes from the JUCO ranks. I think that would balance things out. But I do agree with you another year older and with two talented point guards playing next season, this team will be a hard team to defend.

There's a difference between potential and consistent production. Baker, Mathis, Harper, McConnell, Johnson, and Carter all show potential, but none of them produces that consistently. Our only consistent production comes from Omoruyi, and that's not enough. To be a tournament caliber team will require at least three, maybe four, players to fill up the stat sheet on a regular basis. Can it happen for us next year? Possibly. But a year more of experience doesn't necessarily guarantee that.

Need to upgrade 1 thru 3 to be a NCAA team. That doesn’t necessarily mean more bodies. Means massive improvement of our current players or current starters being moved down on the depth chart by better players.

Your comment is spot on because potential doesn't always result in future positive results. The lack of consistent 3 point shooters is the major problem area and I don't know if those type players will be on the squad next season.

The goal for 2020 should be a winning season because that minimal achievement hasn't happened for 12 years and counting.Recruiting is based on perception and losing seasons hardly enhances perception.Rutgers still needs shooters so that scoring 70 plus points per game is a regular occurrence.

Next year is the year I believe. If not, the program is not seizing a fine opportunity.

Senior Omoruyi, Junior Baker, Senior Shaq Carter.

Our guards' three-point shooting really needs to improve for us to have a chance. Maybe a real distributor like Mulcahy will help the guys we already have get better looks, which will lead to a better %. I think Baker, Kiss and Harper would all benefit from that. But, if outside shooting does not improve, I don't see an NCAA bid anytime in the near future.

The freshman have upside but some of the others I fear have peaked. Mulcahy will help. A shot at the NIT is a realistic goal. I would be shocked if we made th NCAAs next year.

Just Mulcahy and Young will not be enough. We need at least one more impact guy for next year be it a freshman or a grad transfer.

We have one open scholarship and I'd guess there's a good chance another opens. Ideal scenario is getting a freshman who can contribute immediately and another high-level transfer (like Young).

This is exactly my thinkjng ...with one concern

A lot of teams that “get older” have 5-7 players still on a roster that have won before ...you can’t down play how having players in a program that have “done it” transcended the entire roster and the younger guys pick up on it...including handling the mental pressure

How fast we “learn to win”....is going to be a big component to if we dance next year

I really think we will be able to roll 9 guys out there, talent wise, be right there to snare a ncaa bid in the 8-11 seed level....but that also means we learn how to use that talent to win ....

Sometimes it takes an extra year ...painfully.

I really think we have the roster with the physical talent and basketball skills next year to dance ...if we can capture the mental part of the game

As one poster has said .. RU still hasn't won a B1G road game outside of PSU. That MUST be done multiple times to make a tournament run.

Our 3pt and FT shooting are still atrocious and as of now we don't have multiple guys coming in to change those specific stats yet.

The team is improved and I honestly put nearly all of that on Eugene. That guy is the heart and soul of this team and the only one consistently scoring this season.
Geo has been wildly inconsistent and disappointing at times (I think the arrival of Young and Mulcahy help his game the most)
Montez, Harper, Caleb have all shown flashes and mini-spurts of continued output and I think are major major pieces for the future. But I don't think players improve THAT much in a single offseason to go from where we are to the NCAAs.

Kiss and Issa were supposed to help spread teams out with their shooting, but that has been completely an empty hope now at this point.

Other than Eugene our bigs are still really raw. Lots of development to be done still there.

It’s the teams that underperform (Nebraska this year) have injuries or a bad locker room. Maybe a few of our freshmen really become reliable. And Geo and EO. Maybe Young and Mulcahy produce.

I get what you are saying, but we aren’t in a conference of 13 Michigans and MSUs.

Unfortunately Geo has not shown the consistency to be a lock for 30 minutes next year. It is very likely he plays slightly less yet more effective minutes. He has had more below average to bad games than good this season and there will be more guards that need minutes.

Great post which I said the other day. EO is really the only player consistently delivering. The freshman you expect more up and downs from. Geo was to be the lead guard and top scorer coming into the season. He has had a few really good games and showed flashes of being a scorer but has more bad games than good. If he was as consistent as EO we would have a few more wins. Thiam had a ton of experience and seemed prime to be a consistent reliable double digit scorer but it didn't pan out. I would say Doorson has been pretty consistent but he is a role player.

The combination of an extra year as a freshman and only losing one player plus adding a true playmaking PG gives me a lot of hope that the level of play with be better next season and also much more consistent

Geo is the Mike Teel of the rebuild. Mulcahy can be the Brian Leonard. Harper and Mathis are Underwood and Britt. We need to find the Ray Rice, the absolute star.

That's my hope anyway. It's also possible that Geo is Ryan Hart and Mulcahy is Mike Teel and we need to find the Leonard and the Rice.

Not bad. Good call. Imagine this team with Mulcahy and Young plus a 3 point threat like a Luther Mohammed. That’s the real position of need. Myles and carter will be fine next year. Add another big to the 2020 class. We are finally really close. I know many think we have been close before but not like this in this league. The 1 year of experience will pay big dividends next year. We will be in post season next year imo. I’m not sure ncaa but the NIT happens at the very least.

If we replace the loss of Doorson with a legit center who can score, from JUCO or Grad Transfer market, we will dance. (Think what a CJ Gettys could do for this team next year, plus Mulcahy and Young)

Along with Johnson that would give us two legit 5s, with Carter and Gene as two legit 4s, and a sh*tload of talented guards including some who can be effective 3s as well.
