We need another RB

I like Parker and Emmett and to a lesser extent Dowdell, but we need to go find a transfer RB.

We need another guy with the balance and cutting ability of Emmett but able to move a pile and run a guy over as well

I hope the staff recognizes the need there and identifies a solid one in the portal.

I felt like running back play held us back this year and getting a very good RB could mean the difference between 6-6 and 9-3 next year.

It just seems high time Nebraska has a stud RB again.

Thoughts?

My only thought at this time was the RB's looked better, as did our O-Line after Holgorsen started calling plays.

It seems the players took it to heart when he supposedly told the RB's to quit dancing around and hit the hole the O-Line is expected to create.

It's kinda weird that Rhule puts so much emphasis on speed, and yet we haven't had a RB with big play ability in two years.

too bad they can't train speed, it's depressing seeing emmet do all that work to get tackled from behind.

I like Emmet, but I think bringing in another RB could spook him. That's just the way it is. We see bringing in a new player as an opportunity to improve the team. The existing players at that position at best see it as more competition, at worst they see it as a threat, and then they transfer. It's a delicate balance.

I certainly haven't been high on Dowdell this year, but I did see a few sparks with him towards the end of the year. I think better RB coaching, continued competent O-line play, and a more open offense could make the RB's we have look pretty good. I was kind of hoping Ervin would stay and then our RB room would already be set. But from a numbers standpoint, we'll likely try to target another RB. Just hoping that bringing in a RB won't just cause someone else to transfer out.

I think six scholarship RB's is enough. I don't see that position as a major need. If a superstar wants to come, fine. Otherwise, we're good with Johnson, Dowdell, the two new signees and Nelson, Ives. If we lose one or two to the portal that changes things, but I heard good things about the Nelson kid and I have a really good feeling about the two new freshmen.

Rhule tends to look at and talk about straight line speed. I think vision and lateral cutting ability is a lot more important than 40 or 100 meter speed. Johnny Rodgers was the most dynamic football player in Husker football history to ever tote the football and he had fairly average straight line speed. But he could move laterally faster than anyone I have seen in my lifetime and faster horizonally than most people can run straight ahead.

I was confused when EJ was not our starter and featured back at the start of this season given what we saw last season, and now I am confused by people that still think we need a RB. EJ is the total package, albeit not quite the prototype when it comes to size. EJ consistently gets the extra yards after contact and has put all-conference DL on their backs. He is a physical runner. He can catch the ball. Top-end speed is not elite but Rex, Ameer, and many others did just fine without it.

Sure get another RB for depth but I like what we have coming back.

I like our RBs. I’d like to get a good jitterbug type from the portal in place of Ives/Gabe. But if we roll with DD, EJ, and Parker/Booth… that works too. Gotta let the top 2 dogs roll and find their rhythm next year, I feel they are good enough to win us 8-9 games with DH running the offense

Too bad Dowdell didn’t transfer out. I don’t like his skill set at all and do not understand what the coaches see in him. I like EJ but agree with the OP. We need another Abdullah or Helu or Burkhead

It seemed like Dowdell got better as the season went along. He won't break any long runs, but he's decent as a short and medium yardage guy. He was very good near the goal line.

Usually I like your take Pennsy but I like Dowdell - particularly inside the 10 yard line. He is very physical and may get more elusive as time goes by. He may not be a bell cow but I think he will play a major role regardless.

Well apparently that must be the case now that EJ has decided to enter the transfer portal.

My theory continues to be proven correct. Almost every time a poster has equal or less reactions scores as posts, the consensus says they are a waste of time to read. That would be you. Get lost.

It's all my fault. Emmett saw my post and entered the portal. Lol

We definitely do need another running back if he indeed transfers.

When I made that comment, I had heard rumblings about Emmet. Wasn't sure how likely it would be or not.

Can’t blame EJ. Some of these guys are delusional when they enter the portal. EJ was legitimately screwed until Dana got here. He was obviously our best most sure handed back and can catch out the backfield. And Satt wasted him to call plays out of his coloring book. Good on you EJ… go make some $$$$$

Doesn't mean he's actually leaving
Some guys do indeed stay. I think this year especially the kids are dropping their name in to see what kind of $$$ they can get. And we can match or beat that… or let them walk
Hope EJ stays.. if he doesn’t, we will get someone else
