That's why the way Cal does these secondary type players matters...because we don't get carryover as much anymore.

no, the idea that the recruits just don't pan out doesn't cut it

Cal was talking this team up in August as world beaters.

There is a bigger issue than talent on this team. The question is would another high level coach, with a strong coaching staff be at 5-11 with this team.

Opinions will vary on this but I don't think its hard to imagine this team being at a minimum .500 with someone focused solely on putting the best players out there and coaching them.

The talent is there, but not the talent that balls out day 1. A bunch of Richards, Montgomery, Quickley, Juzang, and Washington type talent...

Guys that are good enough to play year 1, but when they have to be the star it doesn’t work.

I’ll be fine with this season so long as 5-6 guys return...but if we have another year where we bring back 1-2 guys...yeah then even I’ll question Cal. Bringing back a bunch off this team will be good...playing in these close games against good teams makes you better and history shows that learning from these situations makes you better the next year...but if we start over again then what’s the point?

I feel the same way when the high mark is an elite 8 or sweet 16
If you get to an Elite 8...then that means your team was good enough to win a title...

And then when you bring back Hagans, Quickley, Richards, and Montgomery with them...then that’s a good situation.

But if it’s an Elite 8 (we didn’t play the tourney last year) and we lose Hagans, Juzang, Montgomery, and Whitney type players...that’s when it’s not worth it...

3-4 rotation players back is all Cal needs if he brings in a great class...5-6 guys with a really good class works fine too.

The only problem is, we wouldn't be happy with being just .500 either.

Darn the luck.

Well we gave it the old college try.

Let's root on the other teams.

We have two upperclassmen that we lose and we struggle to score now, none of the incoming freshman can really be counted on to score a lot of points. Who is going to be able to put the ball in the basket if some do come back?

based on the past 4 games, I'm guessing we'll have a new point guard getting the lion share of minutes next year.

If he doesn't then next year won't be much better

The bench coaching has been bad this year and abysmal in some games. But college basketball has always and will always be about guard play and our guards suck which is insurmountable.

..... that the talent is not there this year. Once in a while recruits just do not pan out. The real question is, which of the current players can come back next year and make a difference? A year can make a difference if we add some quality recruits for next year.

I'm not sure who comes back, but I hope one is Jackson he's a fighter....
