I’ve mentioned this in a few threads but I think it bears repeating. We have played these teams 2 and 3 times. They know our plays as well as we do. They know where Grady goes, what he does, how we screen for him. I think we will see a lot of difference once we get out of conference. Scouting someone for 2 days isn’t like playing someone for a third time in 2 months.
This, this, and this, can't be said enough.

I wonder why we can't get Grady to square up on this 3pt shot? Seems an easy enough fix but he is constantly shooting off balance which ups the level of difficulty by like 10x.

IN the context of a team trying to get to the Final Four, the concerns posted are valid in comparing UK to 1 and 2 seeds. UK has been a 2 seed trying to match its Kansas game performance and potential. Compared to the hundreds of teams with no chance at the Final Four, UK is a fantastic team. Oscar needs consistent help to win 6 in the tourney. Getting a player of the night performance wins a lot of big games but usually not the championship. Ty Ty is finally getting back to health which means Wheeler can notch it down a level and Grady is second option not first and can focus on better shots. His run of nailing very tough shots had to balance out. Like a pitching staff missing a starter Ty gets them back in balance. Brooks as an opportunistic contributor is his best role which a healthy line up does. I think Toppin will be a big contributor. Team is fun to watch trippling wins from last year.

Since you've presumably watched most games this year, what plays do we run exactly?

And if other teams are adjusting to us, why don't we also adjust to them? Shouldn't that balance out?

I'm not down on the team....but I just don't feel like we've had a dominate/great game since Kansas beatdown. We mostly rack that up to Wheeler/Washington not being 100% percent.....or is it teams have just improved as the year wares on and UK has not. But even in our wins....we've looked very 'meh' for stretches. Is that a valid concern?

I just think this a very good roster but it's never been elite.

- Grady is an elite shooter when open...but he tends to not pull the trigger when somewhat contested (and it's not about Cal doesn't run enough stuff for him). And Grady was awful on defense in Vandy game
- Our PF spot has been the one issue all year long...cant' count on Brooks/Toppin every night.
- TyTy....is he hurt of just OK of a shooter. He was up to 40% 3pt going into Auburn game....he's down to 34%...will he get on a tear after Vandy game or be hit/miss shooting?
- Wheeler.....sometimes he's a feast or famine PG and he's 5'8
- Very short bench
- Oscar is the only elite player on the roster IMO.

Is this enough to win it all or get to final four....I don't know.

I have said all along that wheeler will ultimately get this team beat, he is a really nice player but he just can’t have the ball in his hands in end of shot clock situations in tight games. TYTY has got to take over these games for any chance to get to the final 4.

The minute Cal decides to value burning time over scoring, and we go into "milk the clock" mode, our backcourt shoud be Tyty, mintz and grady. 3 guys who I feel some confidence in if they get stuck w/ the ball in their hands with time expiring, and have to heave one up or sink the little running floater.

Jordan Wright went off. Had nothing to do with bad D.
It is most certainly BAD D when you allow the hottest man on the opposing team to continue to get up shots. Why not deny him the ball??? Works great for opposing teams on Grady.

That last 3 he hit TyTy just watched him catch the ball on the inbounds and shoot an UNCONTESTED 3 that he made. That is BAD D.

It’s more about the down screen action we run. We run Grady baseline to baseline, curl him around screens from Oscar and Toppin/Brooks. When you have played and scouted teams numerous times, the defender is already hedging those screens and beating Grady to his spot. Our problem right now is we haven’t adjusted to that. Whether that is Cal not wanting to change up the plays or our lack of imagination on going to different spots. Either way, Grady’s defenders know where he is going on those cuts every single time.

We were playing at such a high level before our injuries hit.

Still haven't made it back to that point yet.

Just need to keep winning and advancing and hope we can hit our stride again when we really need it.

Tomorrow maybe?
I’m hoping the timing of this works perfectly. Play well today and win (probably another close one), and incrementally get back to that high level of play over the next three weeks.

I think I actually like this scenario better than coming in having won 10 in a row and having to sustain that. IMO it’s easier to get that chemistry back after you’ve had it before than get to that high level and have to sustain it for six weeks or so.

No rim protection, a PG who can’t shoot, TyTy hasn’t progressed over the last 3 months, Brooks is downright unplayable at times and our best shooter doesn’t shoot the ball for long periods of time.

I guess the good news is there’s no great teams this year but it’s hard to imagine this team winning 6 straight unless things change in a hurry.
Good grief your just a miserable person aren’t you

25 for TyTy tonight, but we do have issues. Playing like this will have us going down in the S16.
Have you been paying attention to other games in other conference tournaments?

did you see where he shot the 3 from?

Ty Ty “could” be elite and after last night I think moving forward thats very possible.
