Wow, what a long strange trip this has all been, eh? But in the end we finally got what most of us wanted, even if it required a lot more effort, angst, heartache and elation than we ever thought possible. And at the end of the day, WE DID IT! Seriously, we should all give ourselves (well at least the ones who really wanted Greg back) a big freakin' hand for an unprecedented grass roots effort in bringing Greg back to the Banks, after it seemed like the deal was dead last week.

From letters to phone calls to Facebook posts to tweets and back again and over again (and over and over), make no mistake about it - this doesn't happen without the efforts of us fans and the big donors, as well as the media, especially our NJAM friends. This will make for an interesting case study some day in grass roots organization and impact. I know I must've sent dozens of emails to Hobbs, Barchi, the RU Board of Governors, and even Governor Murphy, as did thousands of others. Finally, RU is ready to commit to big time football in the B1G.

Now Greg and his new staff need to deliver after we all went to bat for him and it's not going to be easy, just like in 2001, but at least we have a much better infrastructure and program in place vs. back then, so Greg just needs to recruit his *** off, hire some top notch assistants and coordinators, allow them to do their jobs and bring us back to respectability to start and then we can start worrying about beyond that. Between this and the possible snowstorm, I'm a little wired, lol.

We finally dragged this provincial thinking BOG into the 21st century. And whether they like it or not, big time athletics is now part of big time academics, just like most of us envisioned. We can become the northeast equivalent to Michigan, Berkeley, UNC and UCLA, that honor and marry academics, research and big time athletics. BOOM!

Well said. Here's a part of the emails I sent today to the usual suspects, echoing exactly what you said.

"Just wanted to follow up, in case you hadn’t seen this latest Tweet from Jeff Towers, one of our most generous donors and a huge Greg Schiano fan, as well as this superbly written article by Lenn Robbins, entitled, “Penny Wise, Schiano Foolish – Time for Rutgers to Invest in its Future.” I understand trying to negotiate the best deal for Rutgers, financially, but I cannot implore you enough that not figuring out a creative, win-win way to close this deal and hire Greg might well be the death knell for Rutgers Football and even its place in the B1G.

There are many in the media and the sports world who are now questioning whether one of the largest and greatest State Universities in the USA should be part of this athletic conference and the prestigious academic consortium that goes with it, if we’re unwilling to support even basic expectations for our football program. The risks of revenue reduction and damaged reputation, if we don’t close this deal, are real.

We have a very good State University that is underfunded relative to the wealth of our state, as NJ is the 2nd wealthiest state in the US - it's time to start funding Rutgers like it deserves to be so we can move from the underappreciated jewel it is to one of the top State Universities in the US, including its athletic programs. It's time. Get it done. Thanks for your attention."

Welcome to the 1980's. I've always said the greatest advertisement for a university is their football team. Congrats on getting the guy you wanted.

Great post Numbers. We as alums and fans should be proud. We truly were revolutionary with our outpouring in letting our feelings be known to the administration and Governor

And for those that said it didn't matter...you were wrong

Thanks, guys. Was definitely a team effort by thousands and all those naysayers who said we were wasting our breath are looking pretty foolish right now. Politi's last email to me mentioned how incredibly impressive the fan response was and how critical it was (along with the media stories by him and others) to getting RU back to the bargaining table. Hobbs/Barchi/BOG etc. simply made a huge mistake in grossly underestimating the level of passion of the fanbase for bringing Greg back, especially once it became known how close we came and how it looked like RU reps didn't really care.
