We can't fire Mullen

This is not a pro-Mullen opost, but a sobering recognition that there is no way barring going 0-8 the rest of the season or a motorcycle accident that we can fire Dan Mullen at the end of this season, and probably not even next season if we have 3 or 4 win seasons. It all comes down to perception. Nobody outside of us watched any of the UMass game Saturday and truly took in the piss poor effort and unmotivated play we showed (though it's been seen all season). It would be perceived worse than the Cutcliffe firing. Firing him for his worst aspects (keeping Hevesy and Sallach, or pissing off fans and recruits through Yankee-ness) would be perceived as petty - firing him for being too loyal or because of his personality. He'll have to enter Houston Nutt territory of national ridicule for us to can him after next year. I think he'll still have a largely positive national reputation, even if we have back to back 4-8 seasons.

So how would you get rid of Mullen if you can't fire him. I think the lack of a contract extension pissed him off. So I think we should give him one, but change the conditions. His salary would remain the same, but he would be required to fire Hevesy and Sallach, and the AD has veto power over any hires. His buyout would also be small just to accommodate his wanting to leave. If he does not wish to take the contract extension, tell him fine, that none of these negotiations will be made public, and he has 2 years remaining on his current contract. This would be insulting enough to drive him to take a job elsewhere even if it's not a better deal.

I want Mullen to succeed here because it means MSU succeeds. I think he's smart enough and talented enough to take us very far, but right now he has no motivation and too many of his negative traits are driving our program in a bad direction.

Make him fire Hevesy might just make Mullen resign. No downside to require it.

No one watched Saturday because our short timer AD put umass on the schedule with less than regional TV coverage.

Penn St is going to open back up this year most likely...

This right here for the idiots who think he's mailed it in.

Sure he might be pissed at not getting the "automatic" extension, but so would any of you after a 10 win and 9 win season b2b something the school has never done.

He hasn't mailed it in. If he wants the Penn St job, he knows he needs to keep winning here.

He's just being a stubborn coach and hasn't made recruiting a priority. Recruiting classes averaging 27 over 4 years gets you 9th best talent. Hard to compete with the top of the conference with the 9th most talented roster outside of every "24 seniors on the two deep" years.

He needs to recruit inside the top 15 for a 4 year average if you guys expect us to compete with the top teams in our division much less the conference.

If Mullen leaves on his own accord, that would make us look much better in the public eyes.

I would say go after urbans Current OC again. I say that blindly as I don't know who it is, but dudes coaching tree and results speak for themselves

He's got to win his way out, it's that easy. However, if he goes 4-8 and 3-9, we'll fire him and no one would argue with it.

I can guarantee you one thing....next year we are either rising or falling from 4/5 win territory (like this year). The loss of trench guys and their JUCO replacement formula is usually boom or bust.

Miles lost to Alabama 5 times in a row. Dan is a Dak away from being over half way there against Ole Miss. That would get him fired, I think.
