What are y’all thoughts on American baseball players playing against team USA. Ex: Michael Lorenzen born and raised in California. Always been a USA citizen. He didn’t make team USA roster so he signs up to play for Italy bc his family’s heritage is Italian. He has previously been on the JR USA team. Would be odd trying to take down your own country that you are a citizen of and grew up in. Treasonous

I just don't want this getting political.

If team USA wins and they get invited to DC, and accepts...will half the country freak out...again?

I think some just want to play & will play for anyone in order to get that chance. Others are signaling their virtuous nature.

I was with you until the last word.

Are Dee Bost (Bulgaria) and Teaira McCowan (Turkey) also committing treason?
Not just his last word, his last sentence is spot on. It’s treasonous in the context of national loyalty and cultural betrayal. It’s treasonous because it involves actively working against the nation that provided their upbringing, education, and athletic opportunities- and using those very skills to undermine American success in international competition. My opinion is that athletes that choose to represent foreign nations in international competition against Team USA, for personal gain or for whatever reason, demonstrate a profound disloyalty that warrants revocation of their citizenship. Revocation would enforce accountability and make athletes choose where their loyalty resides. Thís is my stance.

The discussion or point HulksStache made here is about cultural/national allegiance in that spotlight- not whether the games “count” like regular season. Plenty give a ****, including fans, players, and countries investing in it. Who gave you the right to be so indifferent to your own country’s dignity?

He didn't make our national team. What he does for sports in his free time is his own business now as far as Americans are concerned. If anyone needs to opine on it, it's Italians supporting their own national team.

It is most certainly not treasonous. Dear lord, they were passed over for team USA. Now they are playing for another country because someone else wanted them and they weren't given the chance to play for us. I don't blame them, and if I was them I would want to beat DeRosa and team USA's *** for passing me over.

90 percent of the roster and coaching staff are American born. These guys weren’t going to make the American roster so it’s not like they chose one over the other. I don’t see this as a big deal.

I'm probably *gasp* rooting for Venezuela tonight since the best player on my favorite team is their leadoff hitter, and 2 of the USA's starters play for the Phillies. Should I report to a deposition center now, or can I watch the game first?

Did you know that "treason" has a definition?

I see it no differently than how it has worked for decades before now. Hundreds(thousands?) of US born athletes have gained dual citizenship to play for another country's national team in baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, skiing, golf, volleyball, equestrian, track, and more.
And vice versa, athletes from other countries have competed for Team USA.

At some level, yeah its odd or less than ideal...I guess.

But nope- I dont give a 17 in the end.
And calling it treasonous is comical. Clown show time. Just an absurdly extreme take on the situation.

Do you also think coaches should be tried for treason because they are US citizens and coach another country's national team?

It warms my heart to know that you have 0 influence on this issue. Your opinion is peak extremist behavior and wrapped entirely in emotion. This is sports we are talking about...its entertainment. Step back and see what is actually happening here.

Part of the beauty of the US is that they can do whatever the 17 they want and play for whoever the 17 they want and no one can do anything about it. I think they call that Freedom.

It's posts like these that make me lose all hope... beyond my own MSU football trauma.

Revoke their citizenship, come on man, it’s baseball! It’s a few exhibition games, he hasn’t taken a political stance against the US or any individual he just wants to play the game and since he didn’t make the USA he decided to play for Italy not freaking Russia or Hungry. It’s baseball.

I don't find it treacherous or treasonous, but I do find it....odd maybe? I don't know, I have a hard time putting it into words.

Exhibition games? I guess, but it has taken on a different aura in recent years. It's more like the Olympics, or the World Cup. It's a competition to see who is the best country when it comes to baseball. So it's just kind of weird to see Americans playing for the national pride of other countries.

But, in the end, it's been great baseball and it's been fun to watch. So...whatever. lol
