You do realize that it wasn't just the South who brought slaves over right? And you do realize that the confederate flag didn't even exist when the slave trade began? And you do realize that this wasnt even the flag of the South?
So is comparing the paw to the confederate flag like I read in this thread.
I fail to see the positive aspects of having the flag fly at the state house. That said it should be up to the citizens of SC to decide not national sentiment.
Munson you must be texting just to argue because you can't be that ignorant. What does a street name or building or a museum have to do with a flag on State House grounds.
First off slavery was wrong and second you do realize people on both sides owned slaves?
Go look this up if you like, Robert E Lee released his slaves before the Civil War ended, Sherman and Grant kept their slaves until the 13th amendment almost 2 years after the war ended. There was more to the Civil War than Slavery.
I think a lot of people (prior to Wednesday) didn't want it to come down solely because, well, South Carolinians just don't like being told what to do, even though most of those folks didn't or don't give a damn about the flag one way or the other.
Hopefully it comes down and the conversation can move on to real things that matter, like education, jobs, etc, rather than divisive symbols. There have to be a lot of folks out there (including me) who are simply tired of hearing about the damn thing.

I can see your point though - definitely. Dealing with only what's been put out there by several prominent figures now (several even from CU) - I am not against taking the flag down. Just keeping the focus tight for now.
Haley still sucks, but at least she is pushing the GA to do something now and not waiting till next session.

I agree with taking it down. The flag was put up in the 1960s as an act of protest to the Brown v Board decision, and the overarching civil rights progressivism of the JFK/LBJ government. I just don't fully buy the "tradition and heritage" argument. The designer of the flag for Lee also believed the flag to be an idol of the supremacy of white people.

That was true under the Confederacy, but also true of the US before the Civil war and honestly for a few years afterwards. And most of the slaves came in from the northern ports. So the US flag isn't exactly innocent in this either.
Oh no ****. People are idiots when it comes to history. I went to HS with a guy who is now a history teacher, and some of the stuff he puts on Facebook is amazingly ignorant of history. He got schooled by someone on his own post either today or yesterday. It was absolutely hilarious.

More states had slaves under the flag of the USA than the Confederate flag.
I'm all for taking the Confederate flag down. The Emancipation Proclamation was in the middle of the war and the 13th Amendment was after the war.
Every street name, every monument, every single piece of history related to a war that formed the country we live in today. Basically we need to bulldoze Charleston and all of the plantations. Boone hall, Magnolia, Drayton, etc were all slave owning plantations. Tillman, and any other state building that has ties to the flag, civil rights, or slaves must be renamed. They cannot be seen as history, but as a symbol of slavery. They all must go.
btw, pretty much all of that was sarcasm but I am sure some people are serious about it.
I do think the flag needs to come down btw. It doesn't affect me either way. I have better things to worry about and do. Keep it there, meh. Take it down, meh...... The only reason I say to take it down is to prevent tax dollars from being spent and prolonged media exposure. As a history buff, I can respect the past and enjoy learning about it. I also recognize that there was much much more to the civil war than just slavery. Abolishing slavery was a great thing and certainly a positive that came out of the war but it was not the reason it began. It is amazing to see teachers who only teach on slavery and students who only know slavery when talking about the war.
Nonetheless, there is no point trying to push history on protesters. There is no listening and frankly I could care less if it flies. The point of my little speech here is that there must be a line drawn where people must accept that history happened or they can erase it from history and pretend it didn't.
History is a novel of life. Ripping out pages makes for a confusing narrative.
What about the American flag that forced the relocation of Indians and killed the ones that didn't go?

It is good to see momentum on the side of taking this flag down and placing it in a museum.
No one says the "whack job" (as one poster put it) killed 9 people because of the flag. But don't overlook the "whack job" who placed the Battle Flag of the Confederacy there in the first place in 1961. Does anyone on TI really want to be the one arguing against integration of public schools and universities? Against allowing blacks and whites to drink out of the same fountain? Use the same restrooms? Stay in the same hotels and eat in the same restaurants?
Let's recognize the REAL reason the flag was placed over the Capitol. It had nothing whatsoever to do with honoring the soldiers or it would have been up since the day the "War Between the States" began. It had everything to do with racism. Bigotry. Segregation. Things people at Clemson - at least the ones I know - abhor about America's past. That is not a past to celebrate or honor. It is a deep stain on America that should not be hidden.

Doesn't matter to me but should we take down the American Flag cause we stole this land from the Indians? All of it is our history. What will they try to do next? Something to think about. Taking it down isn't going to change ones heart filled with hate probably going to cause more hate for some folks. Only one thing will change a person heart not to hate.
How would you guys feel if we flew a poster on the state grounds of some punk kid 5-bombing Dabo and Dabo having his aw shucks grin? I would be offended and embarrassed and want it to come down. This is kind of like that. Put the flag in a museum. Get if off the state grounds. I also think we as a nation need to look into school bullying. I think bullying is a factor in all of these mass shootings. I also think the media coverage is partial to blame, as well.

You can also blame the ****** public school system and lack of schools that can teach people job skills. I wonder if this kid had a job doing plumbing, AC work, truck driving, etc, he would have had $$$ in his pocket & not so much hate. He could have been just a hateful jerk, but it makes you wonder.

Years ago Mississippi put it up to vote (their state flag contains the confederate flag) and 64% voted to leave it the way it was. I don't know what they voting by demographic was, but at the time, Mississippi was about 61% white....so doing the math, that likely meant many black voted to keep it the way it was.
Injustices have been done under just about any flag known to man. However, the confederate flag has come to represent these hate groups more than it does the people who are simply proud of their heritage/family/etc. Its a fact. I had one inset in my high school ring as a Byrnes "Rebel in the late 80s. I didnt have a clue what it really meant, I just thought it was cool. Now I think its not cool and I cringe when I see one almost every time. I would venture to guess that less than 5% of the people that fly this flag in any way, shape, or form really know much at all about the civil war, the reasons for it, or any other history of it. I say take it down and put it in a museum where it belongs. A flag that hurts so many people doesnt have to fly in a certain spot (or at all) to remember anything. The extremists that say get rid of all monuments, etc are being very narrow-minded. If you cant put yourself in someone else's shoes, you need to start.

The fact is anyone that doesn't believe what Haley has proposed is deemed Racist. Today, there is no such thing as a debate over the subject. There aren't debates because people are afraid. That's the way this argument (amongst many others)has been planned, implemented and fueled for over 100 years.
I have no problem putting the flag away and treated with intelligent respect...the same respect it was given when Southerners (long dead and buried on the battlefields) carried and flew it as their battle flag against Northern aggression.
This isn't simple. Don't pretend it is. The issues people fear to whisper will be brought into the light loudly and violently and soon. You just have to feel the hate in this thread to know that it's true. THAT'S the unfortunate thing.
