"Wasted" Scholarships?

Feels like to me there are a bit too many "wasted" scholarships on the team. Hate to use the term wasted but I can't really think of a better way to phrase it right now.

Mulder - since Calipari apparently refuses to ever let him do anything in big games. UK has had four big games (at the time Michigan State was still considered a big game), he's played a grand total of 11 minutes in those four games and got two DNPs. He's doing this year exactly what we knew he was capable of doing - making shots. And he rebounds great. I frankly just don't get why he doesn't play because of defense when the other guards aren't exactly doing yeoman's work on defense. If you aren't going to play him when he is doing what we know he was capable of doing, why even recruit him, much less give him a scholarship?

Wynyard - All I ever heard about how he is so far behind all the other bigs. On a team that could really use some help at the 4/5 after Bam and he can barely get garbage time minutes.

Humphries - I still think he has a chance to eventually help, but he's barely improved and looks completely lost quite often. Calipari refusing to go away from the switching defense isn't exactly doing any wonders to help him either.

agree with u on Mulder ...............but Humphries he has gone back instead of getting better. Wynyard is strong but he's also one of slowest guys on the team.

Somebody needs remedial arithmetic. Platoons didn't go over so well. There are always going to be scholarship players riding pine. They make their contribution in practice.

Need about 50 more threads like this to go with the 50 we got.

Yeah, what a waste, Humphries is statistically only our best rebounder and second best shot blocker.
I loved the platoon, but that team was a unique situation (until Poythress injury). There simply aren't enough minutes to keep more than 8-9 guys happy.

WE CAN'T HAVE 13 MCDONALD'S ALL-AMERICANS AT ONCE.

There have to be bench and role players. There even can be a few practice players.

Thank you, where do people get this ****? Mulder can't play D... based on what exactly? Dude doesn't get a chance to play so how could you possibly know he doesn't play D. Same with SKJ, people say he's lost on offense, what are yall basing this off of? Humphries gets minutes and brings nothing to the table other than dumb over-aggressive fouls but we get to see that.

Umm maybe by watching them?....in the games they have been in, Blue/white game, scrimmages, exhibitions...

You guys see them when they play against the scrubs at the end of games against marginal or just plain bad teams and think they can do well against real players. You're just not very good judges of payers and their true abilities.

How about you let Cal coach this team? He's at practice every day, and sees what these kids can do. Plus, he's a HOF coach and you're not.

How many "wasted" threads do we see on RR each day? We either need to cut some thread starters or find some posters who can start better threads![roll]

Oh boy, we got a live one here. This should be a treat.

You guys should know by now part of the Cal system is to give the studs all the PT they can handle and play a very short bench. Mulder is a role player a best.

Why should we know that? What do I gain by knowing that?
Cal plays who fits what he needs to do in each game. He knows his team better than you. That's all that needs to be said.

They played well in the Blue -White game and whenever they've gotten a chance. I guess going 7-12 for 15 points in 25 minutes is what you saw since you can't simply point to either Mulder or SKJ looking bad.

I know I'm not the coach, but I would have liked breaking in SKJ more against the cupcakes so he might be a better player now over having no options besides Humphries. Also with shooting a major concern with only 1 good shooter amongst the 3 guards and Willis struggling, Mulder needs to find more minutes. We look atrocious against a team that can run a very good zone at us.

It seems like all we worked on before the season was trying to score in transition. Unless we come out of Camp Cal with a better half court offense and do better with our switching defense, we will lose 5 or 6 more games. You know everyone we play is going to zone us the rest of the year and shoot out of their minds like Louisville.

Kentucky has actually played 12 games. It's pretty clear the three I mentioned are just a waste of a scholarship, especially Mulder since he is a senior that produces and rarely gets burn against any good teams.

Do you want us to consistently play 11 people? Every team has wasted scholarships because nobody plays all their scholarship players consistently.

Don't need to play all of them consistently, but when you have a glaring weakness at a position or a set of skills and you have players at that position or players with those skills and they can barely get any meaningful playing time if any at all against a meaningful opponent, the scholarship has been wasted.

This post exemplifies the stupidity that permeates this board after a loss. Your work down at the docks really qualifies you to question the coaching decisions of Coach Cal. I think you should try get on the line for his call in show. I'm sure he'd appreciate your advice.

Well when he does play the player he's guarding blow past him to the basket. It's not that hard to figure out. If that didn't happen he would play more.
