Terrible name. Yes, Commandos would have been preferable. I suppose people will derisively call them the Commies. Glad I'm a Raiders fan.
Yes, I will call them the Commies. They like to be think of themselves as our Commanders. Our rulers.

I not only live in an area with a large number of native Americans but I also know a fair number. Many of them call themselves redskins and are proud of it. The native American population in our area has WAY more important issues to deal with than the name of a sports team. For a long time the term "Indian" was considered racist by some Native Americans because "we're not from India". Now it's widely accepted by many and the name of the Crazy Horse center in the Blackhills is the National Indian museum.
Of course you are personally connected to this, like everything else!

they will allways be the redskins, far as I'm concerned..
folks need thicker skin across the board.

I'm a covenenter, and I'd be ok if they called them the washington rednecks...they won the glorious and American revolution. Jefferson copied the mecklenburg declaration

Again, I'm not telling you what to feel. I'm also not telling you what 100% of natives think or feel. I'm telling you what I personally would or would not feel comfortable saying to someone. I stand by what I said and I don't think the majority of the native americans I would encounter around where I grew up would be comfortable with you calling them redskins. Not militant people, just normal everyday people.
I normally call people by their first name IF I can remember it. The name of a sports team IMO is way different than calling out to a group or even an individual person. There are in fact some Native Americans who took pride in Washington's team name back when they were winning..... Now not so much. Hell I still see Washington Redskin gear on Native American guys from out in the Winner. Martin and Wagner area. A group of Sioux tribal members designed that logo.

Anything decided by committee was going to be a failure.

Why do NFL teams need mascots? Half of them are cats and the other half are birds. Pretty dumb. Does anybody really get jacked up about the mascot?

Yikes. Kinda went the other way from the Redskins. Would almost think this would be even more offensive. “We’ll change the mascot from native Americans, to the dudes that slaughtered them”

One of the militant groups that was pressing this issue has come out with a statement now that they won't stop until ALL "offensive" mascots, team names and tomahawk chopping are removed from sports. Somehow I have a hunch that they were PAID to consult on what the new name should be. The Rainbow Coalition started a great business model for this country. Social protection rackets now abound.

It’s interesting, because they’re sort of underhandedly (possibly intentionally) white washing any Native American symbolism from the culture. As a fan of native culture, I’m not too excited about it

Can you imagine the fear of George Custer 's troops when they saw all of those warriors show up led by guys who wore that nearly identical head dress as designed by the Sioux tribe? Lots of brown in those blue calvary pants. There are some amazing historical photos of Sioux tribal members in the backlot of Wall Drug.

Washington politicians have been doing a lot of subtle, and not so subtle, jabs at us. Signals. This is them telling us "make no mistake about it, we are your commanders".

Going from a nickname that used input from some tribes to a nickname that would be given to a group attacking those who gave input on the original nickname, yeah real subtle jab.

Making everything political, which has been the push very hard the last few years, this just seems like the next step. my dad loved the ‘skins and the packers teams. Their toughness, they seems to be gone

As long as they kept the same colors they’ll still remind most fans as the redskins. I still prefer the Washington swamprats or cockroaches simply you vote them out of office but you can’t get rid of them

Isn’t “commander” kind of an offensive term in today’s woke world?

You are “commanding” someone...giving them orders...pushing them around...bullying them...oppressing them...

Seems like they missed the mark on this one. But is anyone actually surprised?

Really a missed opportunity here. So many better names. My preference was the Washington Insurrectionists.
