It's odd that this decision surprises me. PJ really had no business trying to go to the NBA this year.

Yet here we are.

Many people miss the point of players going to the combine. PJ is prime example of player who SHOULD go. It is designed for players to get feedback from NBA scouts without losing their eligibility. They hear unfiltered message about their game. This allows players to make informed decisions rather than play the guessing game. It also allows players to hear what they need to work on.

There's a good article about Barnes telling Schofield to go to combine Schofield told Barnes he wanted to come back for his Sr year. Barnes explained the process and the value of going. Schofield has mentioned how valuable the information was and how it will improve him as a player.

The combine isn't just about leaving college. It's about putting your game and skills under the microscope, then hearing back from the basketball doctors regarding what next steps you need to take. Going to the NBA combine is one of the best decisions any player can make. But ... you can only pull your name out one time.

Admittedly my statement wasn't as clear as it should have been. As evidence by 2 people replying essentially the same way.

I don't take issue with PJ going to the combine, testing the waters, or anything else. Honestly I don't even have a problem with PJ if he ultimately stayed in the draft. His life, his decision. However, in my opinion PJ had an above-average year, but one that showcased a number of weaknesses. Staying in the draft this year could have been detrimental to his professional career. Coming back, getting stronger and more explosive, and fixing the deficiencies in his game should propel him to a first round draft pick next year, and a much more steady path to a professional career.

I'm back (back) the fog has lifted
The earth has shifted
and raised the gifted
You knew I'd be back
so pack your bone And hit the road jack
cause daddy's home

Some quotes from PJ & Cal

“The plan all along was to get all the information that was out there to make the best decision for me and my family,” Washington said in a UK-issued news release. “I’ve always had a list of goals that I want to accomplish in my life, and one of the most important ones is making it to the NBA. That hasn’t changed at all.

“But another one of my goals is to win a national championship in college, and that’s what I want to do next season at Kentucky. I believe with who we have coming back and who we have coming in that we can do that.”

“Whatever PJ decided, we were going to support, but I’m really happy with the decision he’s come to because I really want to coach PJ for another season,” coach John Calipari said in UK’s release. “I know how good of a player he is and think he showed it at times last season, but I’m looking forward to seeing him grow and build on it. What I love most about this decision is why PJ is doing it.

“He told me he wants to come back to be a leader, to grow and to drag his teammates with him as we try to do something special.”

Trying is something that all players should do but leaving when you are not ready is not.

He’s the one I wanted back the most. Also surprised that he’s the only one to return. I thought it more likely that we get vando and wenyen.
