Talking to some guys last night...not Rutgers fans... and they claimed that Flood really wasn't that bad as a head coach and that the off-field stuff is really what doomed him. They claimed the same thing doomed Graber back in the day....something about a Sears on rte. 1
So I went and checked...you know...the bottom line....wins and losses.
And it turns out that Flood had a better won-loss record than any Rutgers head coach in the last thirty five years....or since we started playing a Big Boy schedule. I was kinda surprised.
Flood.....27-24
Schiano....68-67
Shea......11-44
Graber....29-36-1
Anderson....27-34-4

Now just for the record, I am fine with Flood's canning, I think it was the right move, and I hope that Ash takes RU to the top and many National Championships. But those guys last night were right about Flood being one of the better coaches here at RU. The bar really wasn't set that high when he got here.

Whether he was a good coach in relation to our past coaches (debatable) and whether he is generally a bad coach (he absolutely is) are two separate things. You can be the smartest man in the room, but if that room is full of idiots, it doesn't mean much.

He was a good Coach. Just handed a bad situation + just an above average recruiter when the unrealistic expectations required him to keep all NJ's top kids

It is a matter of opinion - but if there was some objective means of measurement, it would seem that in a full consideration of all aspects of the job he would never be viewed as anything other than average ... certainly not 'good' and easily below average.
He was not well equipped - in terms of experience or strategic thinking - that is on him
He was given below average $$$ to build a staff - that is on RU
He became so fixated on doing it his way that he lost perspective - again - on him

He was not a good coach. He was very mediocre.

-he underachieved in 2012. I think that team was held back by Flood. The offense was sooo conservative. Could have been a special year.
-He was exposed in 2013 and should have been canned then. Horrible losses to average teams and never looked prepared.
-Fridge saved him in 2014. I'll give him credit for hiring him.
-Exposed again in 2015 with some of the worst losses we've seen since the Shea years. Fridge (real D1 head coach) wasn't around to save him
-he kept a QB in the game that ended up with 6 iNT's. Never saw that before.
-when he made a bad decision, he was so stubborn that he'd double down and make it worse.
-I could go on...

And don't compare Schiano's record to anyone. He started below ground Zero. From 2005-2011 he was one of the most successful coaches we ever had.

Hearing Ash's press conference made me realize how long it's been since we had a competent HC.

he was a bad coach. Took over a well-coached, well-recruited Rutgers team and slowly turned it into a loser with bad game-day decision-making, stubbornness and weak in-state recruiting.

In retrospect the one good thing I'll say is that the kids played hard even in games they were way behind. You don't make comebacks like Md in '14 and Indiana in '15 unless you have a belief in what the coaches are telling you and they're keeping you focused.

Other than that I got nothing.

i feel he was not a great football coach.

I think anyone of use could have inherited schianos teams, and done just as well maybe better than he did. Fridge rebuilt the offense for him too and he benefited from that.

How can this even be a question; was he a bad coach? That's like asking if Christmas falls on Dec. 25th.

YES, he was BAD but even worse, he came off as being completely lost and in over his head in a position he was never qualified to hold in the first place.

The bar is set and Flood comes in 5th in "Modern times" (+1950)
Burns.........78-43-1= 63%
Harman.....74-44-2 = 61.7%
Steigman....22-15=59.5%
Bateman....73-51=59%
Flood.....27-24=53% win ratio
Schiano....68-67=50.4%
Graber....29-36-1=43%
Anderson....27-34-4= 41.5%
Shea......11-44=20%
As for Flood as a coach his old school ways rubbed many here the wrong way. Staying with a Sophomore QB to help him develop and grow will be a great help next year but the "play Hayden crap" was over done by the PMS crowd (Professional Mud Slingers) And it saddens me to hear/see all the sheep that follow these diarrhea journalist.
Flood was a coach, kid would run thru a brick wall for. BUT his love of mankind was his down fall. He was hustled by an expert (barnwell) into believing his personal quagmire in the spring prevent him for getting a passing grade in Dance, YEA right! Flood fell hook line and sinker. His belief that all his players were like Quentin Gause making the honor role or at least trying to get there, was his downfall. His inspector Clouseau act was beyond explanation? All he had to do is speak to Scott Walker who is there for just that purpose Why oh Why play 007?

I don't know if he is a bad coach, but right now he is a bad head coach. Questionable leadership skills, curious decision-making and poor recruiting doomed him. Maybe that changes down the road with more experience, but he sure wasn't ready for the job when he got it here.

This why Flood was better then Schiano.
Flood knew his shortcoming so he made it a point to surround himself with talent Fridge is a perfect example. Where Schiano was such a micromanager he had to have input on everything . On the offense that is where he failed.
Yes one good OC in McNutly (sp) who left too soon.

Flood is so good that he will never get a job in college football again. Schiano got a job as a NFL head coach.

We should never have taken a position coach and made him coach. We all know what happened and why it happened. He was never an expert in Offense or Defense. Had no real coordinator experience. The team, therefore, had no identity. Nice guy, cared about the kids, great with the community, but not cut out to be a BIG coach.

Listen any college football talk show, I mean any. They love the hire of GS, and it's always followed he resurrected a dead program at Rutgers and had a ton success there, he's the reason Rutgers is in the B1G Ten
Like it or not, that's what people think

At best I think Flood was average in a conference where average doesn't cut it. he was able to do something Schiano never could (AAC title even if shared). Outside of this season, which IMO had too much upheaval to totally blame it on him, he won the games RU was supposed to win, lost the games everyone knew they'd lose, and won more toss up games than he lost. But in the B1G and with all the talent available in the State of Rutgers (NY, PA, NJ,MD) that's not good enough.

Well if he were a good coach he should have no problem landing another P5 job or at the very least Div1a. I'll eat my shoes if that happens.
