That was huge. As far as I understand the rule, as long as a team has not used a challenge and has a timeout, a call of backward pass should be challengeable.

It should have just been reviewed. What a strange start to the game. Review booth caught after a late night out? But yes also should have been challenged. And they had even more time to consider it as there had been a penalty on NU.
They said on the radio broadcast at half time that in fact it was reviewed. The replay ref must have been drunk. Frost should have thrown a challenge flag and made them take their time when looking at it. Horrible start that set the tone for the day IMO.
Was the stupidest crap I’ve ever seen before. So much wrong with that play:
1) Ball clearly was thrown forward
2) Luke was clearly past the LOS when throwing
3) Why was the replay booth not issuing a review?
4) Why was our coaching staff not calling a timeout or screaming for a review?
Who knows how the final outcome was affected but it was HUGE in my opinion. Just watched a game from 2001 and it was so much more enjoyable and refs were so much more accurate WITHOUT review. Amazing how many calls are missed now.

Not true. There is a pool reporter who interviews the referees after the game. The lead official said the play was not reviewed because it was an obvious lateral pass. Which is a huge pile of **** and he should be fired.
100% agree if that’s what he said. I don’t know how anyone can watch the replay and say that was a lateral. The ball was thrown forward.
I’m not even 100% convinced it went forward. But Jesus it was absolutely close enough to stop the game and make sure. Dude must have been taking a dump or something.
Point #2 was what stood out for me, even if ruled a forward pass, how did nobody ( including the announcers as they reviewed the play continuously ) not notice that he was 2 yards past the line of scrimmage when he tried to throw the pass ? AM has been criticized for his decision making but I thought Luke's looked even worse for most of the game.
I don't believe the no good camera view after the fact excuse. I think it came down to 2 reasons:
1. The ref saw that Luke went past the line of scrimmage and gave him the benefit of the doubt it was on purpose and thus Luke intended to lateral the ball backwards. Since it looked close in real time they let the play go.
2. Not a single player or coach on the Nebraska sideline seemed to argue that it was a forward pass (so makes it appear even Frost intended it to be a backwards lateral in his play call). If the play call was for a forward pass you would think Frost would of at least looked to the big screen to see why it was called a backwards pass or ask Luke about it. Refs probably said to the themselves.....hmmm Nebraska is not questioning it......lets play on.
The play right after that when Illinois appeared to fumble but recovered closer to the endzone. I think the ball was placed at the point of recovery instead of 6 yards back where the runner had his knee down before the fumble. No replay there either.
