I don't know man. The game has lost TONS of popularity because of this style today. The 80's and 90's were the height of NBA popularity. There's no debating it.
No, everybody back then hated that style and wanted it to be less physical

Only because of Michael Jordan. I guess we just disagree but I can tell you I quit watching for 20 years because of players like Shaq and Rodman.

So thats why the NBA is almost on par with American Soccer? Because they wanted a change from when it was at its highest popularity?

I think I'm figuring you out whiteness........slowly but surely. ......[cheers]

Like I said, that poll is extremely extremely misleading. They changed it 2002-2003 by the way after Jordan

No actually the NBA was on par with Football because the game itself was far more entertaining. Better players with better personalities and studs on many teams. Today is meh.......it's ok. Like I said, the p[popularity has tanked for a reason.

But we just disagree on this one,.....no harm no foul...

There were legends during that time, it wasn't just Jordan that made it popular. We've got players of his caliber today, people just don't like the game itself as much. Like I said, crappy personalities, soft, and pampered today vs. back then. It's turned people off. But they didnt want a change from when they liked it to a style they don't. Come on.

NBA popularity now < 80's 90's buy a mile....

The ratings are going down due to cord cutting and everything post jordan was done. Also American Soccer draws like 250k viewers for a playoff game. See what the NBA playoff ratings are this weekend.

It's at its highest popularity right now, you flipping nitwit. Global popularity and revenue coming into the league is hgher than ever before in its history. So is overall skill level and qualiity of play. Just a fact. Sorry if it pops your old timer "what I wish were true but aren't" delusions.

I loved the 70's and 80's Sunday afternoon games, usually a double-header. 140-136 final scores. Philly vs. Boston was my fav matchup. Contrary to legend, they did play defense back then. It's just that the offenses were so potent. Very hard to stop Dr. J, Bird, Branch, Walton, Maxwell, etc.

Lockout in 1998, Jordan retiring, Malice at the Palace, Hip Hop culture backlash, Lockout in 2012, cord cutting, etc all contributed to that

At least you arent denying it's down though........

I was just messin with ya. But the game isn't as fun as it used to be to me. I just turned 30, and I love seeing Uk boys in the league, but the game itself is just bland. Especially during the season. Different strokes for different folks.

Curry is crazy though. Still can't figure out how he's so open all the time though.

You are so damn clueless about the world at large.

No, the League's popularity is certainly not "down." Sorry, but that's just the truth. Maybe it doesn't seem that way in whatever corner of redneckville you reside, but in the world overall the League is far more popular than ever before. Do you think anyone was watching the NBA in China back in 1980 when you were enamored with young Larry and Magic? Nope. But guess what, now they are, passionately, in unprecedented numbers, all over the world. That's the difference.

And that has also resulted in unprecedented money flowing into the League from all over the world. I mean, my god, have you seen these recent TV contracts? You don't think the league's doing well? Well, I'm afraid the League's reps are too busy wading through all these piles of money pouring on top their heads to address your provincial concerns.

hey dipshit, do yourself a favor and read the many articles about the "declining" popularity of the NBA. The MLB (which I love) has lost tons of popularity too, in case you missed that. But :scream: listen close, they have some of the biggest revenue bundles and contracts in any sport, anywhere....... theres a hint.

I live in Memphis, where there is actually a good performing NBA team. People go to games, and they couldn't care less at the end of the day.

You're as clueless as they come. You don't even understand how this works, as testament by your ramblings. I never said the league wasn't doing "well" mr. straw man, I said its popularity is down, and it IS.

Please link me the most recent of these "many articles." I'd be curious to hear what they say.

You too dumb to google?

I'm not linking anything, if yo want it, go get it. The single biggest NBA pumper is in this thread telling you it's down. You've already tried to move the goal post to debate. I'm not playing straw man games. You think the money equates to "popularity", and that's not entirely accurate. Like I said, Baseball reins over the NBA in total bundles, yet its popularity is down too. Try and figure out what is actually being discussed.

People like sports in general. It doesn't mean they are headed home to tune in for games like they used to.

NBA >>>>>> over college BB right now.

I thought this was interesting from an NBA article....I know it's not the end all, as other factors play into it, but it was quite refreshing and surprising.(as a college basketball fan)

"The NCAA Tournament has left the NBA Playoffs in the dust as basketball’s chief TV draw, turning what was already a large gap between the events into a rout. Outside of an NBA Finals Game 7, it is unlikely any NBA game will soon match the 28.3 million viewers for this year’s Duke/Wisconsin title game — or even the 22.6 million for Wisconsin/Kentucky in the Final Four (on cable)."

That was last year.

I understand cable cords, but still, the sway this board makes it sound, you'd think college basketball has 10 viewers.

According to the Harris Poll, the NBA isn't even among the top three sports in regards to fan interest in the U.S.

http://www.theharrispoll.com/sports/Americas_Fav_Sport_2016.html

Nationally it ranks behind auto racing. It's barely above ice hockey.

1.NFL
2. MLB
3. NCAA Football
4. Auto racing
5. NBA
6. NHL

It's incredible to have anyone debate it. Even the biggest NBA homer on this board conceded it is true, its popularity is down. I don't agree with his reasons, but he still admitted it.

Then you've got the morons that don't understand the sports empire in general who think just because there's some big contracts it automatically means there's mad popularity.

American Idol and Survivor are popular.

exactly.........it's just where the country is.

But it's still down, as most sports are.

I always find it funny that the one sport your typical "2016 dudes" have enough attention span for is football.

Violence? check.
once a week? check.
on a day off? check.
BBQ or something on a grill? check.

It's the only reason. My 2 favorite sports are baseball and basketball, and I played football in college(baseball too) and now coach high school football.....go figure.[pfftt]

Steph w 400 3's on the season is crazy

The game was certainly fun to watch, not because it was competitive, but it became a highlight of GSWs achievements over the season.

Beating the previous single season record for 3s by 115 is just bonkers.

I agree. I can't watch the NBA unless it's the playoffs. Regular season games are a joke, it looks like guys are just going through the motions.
