They’re Trump-strong in rural Iowa — and not changing their minds

I’m a political junkie. Every day I read The Washington Post and The New York Times, among other media giants, with great interest and appreciation. I understand and value the great writing, thoughtful analysis, logic and reasoning. And the fact checking. Especially the fact checking.

Given that I live in Iowa, The Des Moines Register, The Chicago Tribune and The Kansas City Star are among my favorites as well. I also try to catch a variety of broadcast news organizations over the course of the evening. Being ADD, Twitter presents an endless buffet of delightful and distracting news commentary and stories.

I’m learning that President Donald Trump continues to offend, make missteps, court World War III and faces isolation in the face of the worst presidential polling in history. That he faces possible impeachment, or removal from office when his cabinet invokes Section 25 of the Constitution. I learn that the Republican Party is in disarray and may never recover. In this chaos commentators are speculating just how many Democrats will gain seats in the House and Senate and if it will be enough to take over one or both bodies of Congress in 2018.

I don't doubt that some Trump voters are rock solid in their support of him, and many will likely vote in 2020 just as they did in 2016. I've never said anything different. My point a few days ago was about the Trump voters who were simply voting against Hillary. That subset of voters could be courted by the Dems if the Dems are smart about who they run in 2020. As for 2018 lections, I'll be surprised if the make up of the House changes much - gerrymandering on both sides of the aisle makes that unlikely. With the raio of D to R of the Senate seats that are coming up, I can't see a significant gain, if any, for the Dems.

I don't think the author is wrong. The Dems need to make changes, as do the Republicans in my opinion. Both parties are governed by their fringes now. That's bad for all of us. The fringes don't represent the majority of anyone in this country. They also have a habit of painting their opponents as evil. How do you compromise or make deals with evil people? You don't. So you get what we have now, every vote splitting down party lines. It's no way to run a country. And I would say the same thing if the Dems controlled both houses of Congress and the WH.

For better or worse the extremes of both parties manage the message. Always have.

A Pro Life Democrat could never be nominated in that party and a Pro Choice Republican could never be the GOP nominee.

But the real question is where are the voters?
Election after election proves this is a center Right electorate not center Left.

The middle only makes a difference in close elections, then it usually tips towards the Republican.
