Might be a train wreck???

They lost to Houston Baptist, Richmond and Gardner Webb.

Massoud can get a release if Danny Manning is fired. There are reports that he has an $18 million buyout. I'm 50/50 on believing that tho.

But if Manning is fired AND UCLA hires Bruce Pearl AND he calls Massoud it could get interesting for that kid.

I think Wake made the NCAAS 2 years ago in Dayton as an 11 seed so he may have an extension signed after that run....but 18M means he'll be back for another couple of seasons, i didn't realize it was anything close to that amount.

Pearl was rumored to be interested in UConn when Ollie got canned last spring, since he is from New England. I can see Under Armour looking to protect itself with UCLA being one of their biggest investments and steering Pearl there. I don't think UCLA has a talent deficiency as much as they just don't have an identity within the program. Pearl would give them that.

As far as Massoud, I would think Manning sticks if the buyout is even half of the alleged 18M. Although ticket sales and donations literally would stop if he's retained and they go 3-15 in the ACC this year......right now they're at 1-7, they'll find a couple of wins along the way.

Hahah “might be a train wreck.” As a Rutgers fan, I like to take it easy on calling other schools a train wreck. As for his recruiting, I think we’ve all been following recruiting too long to assume he recruitment is over. Agree, it could get interesting for him. No clue if we have a shot. but I his name will pop up again. Especially since the mods brought it up in January.

Why a blue blood like UCLA has to touch the likes of Bruce Pearl or Rick Pitino (seen that one too) is beyond me.

They should throw a ton of money at Jay Wright or someone similar

We had Massoud as a slight RU lean till he got the Wake Forest offer. All of a sudden it was a foregone conclusion that he would verbal and go there.... and then it happened. Never could understand that, it is not like Wake is upper level royalty

Has anyone actually been there? The Wake Forest campus is gorgeous. It’s also a very good school like Rutgers. The ACC is a great basketball conference like the B1G. Manning has an NCAA championship and has played in the NBA. Wake has also had much more recent basketball success than us. I’m not sure people would assume a player would choose us over Wake.

I think a lot of people were very confused because he was basically a Wake silent commit before he visited. After what happened with the FBI probe last year, it’s pretty normal to be skeptical. Wake is most definitely a great school and it’s not like we’re a basketball factory. We all know where we stand. It was just odd that we knew he was going to commit there before he even visited

Yes, it was the automatic assumption that once he was offered and was going to visit, we were doomed. If he was a silent commit without ever visiting I find that strange

Not contesting that it is an attractive vcampus, etc

IIRC Massoud was all set to commit to Auburn. There was a lot of smoke that he was going to commit to them while on his official visit there.

However, before he could even get on the plane and fly to Alabama Jaylin Williams committed to Auburn and the Tigers told him they no longer had room for him.

Masood then changed the date of his Wake Forest visit and committed on or soon after his visit there.

Because they win at whatever College they Coach at.

I don't think Pearl fits the UC part (and there would very likely be pushback from those folks) but he for DAMN sure fits the LA part.

A small private school like WF has no business letting itself get on the hook for $18 million. Whoever permitted that to happen should be fired. That is absolutely fiscally irresponsible.

More generally, I would like to see something done to address the issue of runaway salaries and long-term contracts. It is not good for college sports.

When Manning got them to the NCAA Tournament he got a new, fully guaranteed, contract. So the $18 million will drop about $2 million after each season but damn.

I have been told that there is a big-money donor who is prepared to write a big check if Wake Forest wants to buyouts Manning.

I’d rather something be done about paying money to recruits and their families/handlers. Pike is not on a level playing field in recruiting.

why would Jay Wright go to UCLA...he won two national championship and Villanova has their pick of recruits and he can continue to win the Big East every year

UCLA is a fading school in a fading conference where expectations are out of wack and the pressure to win in the stupid range.

this isnt Kentucky or Kansas or North Carolina. UCLA is not a marquee job anymore.

Pitino is exactly who they should be looking at.

Always Contemplated whether Jay Wright would ever leave Villanova for another College HC job? The only one for whatever reason I can see him contemplate would be UNC when Roy Williams retires. UNC I'm sure would offer him a Brinks Truck and of course it's a Top 5 gig. Sill may not be enough however given Wright's loyalty to Nova. Also wonder if Coach K leaves Duke to coach the Lakers next year?.....Lebron may convince him with Anthony Davis.....

I agree with you on Jay Wright but can't get there on UCLA.

They just made a bad hire in Steve Alford. I'm not even sure why he took the job. He never seemed comfortable in Los Angeles security having said that he went to three sweet 16 just couldn't get past there or win a conference title. UCLA won 31 games two seasons ago. Ben Howland had them in two final fours.

With their facilities, the amount of money they spend on basketball and a fertile local recruiting territory they should be a more consistent program. Alford wasn't able to deliver that and never seemed to be a good fit out there.

UCLA is probably a top-15 job.

I went to Dave Odom basketball camp when I was 11-12, right after Tim Duncan graduated. Loved the campus. I can see the appeal for anyone who visits. I think was 5’3 at the time, and my roommate was like 6’7 lol

So, a recruit ( Massoud ) from a family that values education was about to commit to Auburn ?

For Rutgers fans, forgot Massoud...if Manning gets fired...we should hope Isiah Mucius wants to transfer back to the Northeast.

Wake is a terrific school-----my 2nd choice back in the day. Had a great visit and a lot of laughs with my host Brian Piccolo.

Agree with you Russ-----UCLA is a bigtime job and if they get the right guy they have everything in place to win big.

It's kind of shocking they haven't actually.

I don't know anything about Auburn academically.

I don't know what Masoud plans to major in. Lots of families say they value education because they think that's the right thing to say to reporters. I'm not saying that that's what Masoud's family did maybe they really do value education.
