We have been watching Waco the last couple of nights and I forgot how crazy all of that stuff was and how long that stand off lasted. If ya'll are bored and looking for something to watch I would recommend it.

We just finished the most recent season of Ozark. We are into Outlander now.

Waco is in the cue. I’ve never watched more shows than the past 2 months.

I watched it too. It certainly got me to thinking. I was young when that happened but what I remember was quite different than the show. Now obviously I don't 100% believe the show or anything but to think there wasn't some controversy there is naive.

Yeah I need to do some reading up on it but the way the portrayed the government going in firing is nuts. They really didn't make Koresh out to be an unlikable person. At least through the first 4 episodes

Yeah you really need to go back and remind yourself of the atrocity that was the federal government’s response to that situation.

The events of their invasion at Sandy Ridge are also worth reminding yourself of as well. Our government will kill you and not think twice.

Koresh and all of the Branch Davidians were found not guilty in their trial that was conducted posthumously.

There’s a documentary called Rules of Engagement that is well worth watching if you’re interested in more information.

I lived in Waco during that time. I was close friends with a reporter and a cameraman who were standing right behind the ATF guys who were in front of the front door. Neither one of these guys are “pro” law enforcement, but they have always maintained that the first shots came through those doors from inside that building. The reporter was hit twice-both rounds from an AK47. Vernon Howell, as he was known around Waco (aka David Koresh) was having sex with those young girls under the age of 13-some of whom he himself had fathered. All these movies/documentaries always try to make the ATF look like a bunch of cowboys. The reason they were there to serve the arrest warrant was because it was well known that they had automatic weapons and enough ammo to hold off an army. They were never coming out of there, period. The mistake the government made was waiting 50-something days to do something. The women and children and most of the men found in the rubble had been killed by close-contact wounds to the head-with a .45 ACP.

Beginning of the doc it states the movie is based off of two books. One from the FBI negotiator that gets removed and one from the survivor "Tibs" I believe. I doubt they'd be reckless enough to be wrong about the bullet holes in the doorway all pointing inwards suggesting the ATF shot first but maybe so since the doc is based off those two books.

Yeah this was how I remembered it. And the fire had come from within too. Who knows how it all truly went down. Probably in the middle.

After the good guys torched the place the best possible option to move onto the next phase would have been close contact with a .45. Got them there faster.

I’ve been through the FBI negotiation class and the ATF don’t look like a bunch of cowboys, they were a bunch of cowboys. That’s the issue you have with tactical guys and negotiators. Negotiators want to end things peacefully and tact guys want to blow **** up. The main problem with Waco was the communication with tactical team and negotiators was ****. Negotiators were telling Koresh one thing while tact team was doing a whole other thing.

As for the fire, it’s believed that the tact team started the fire to smoke them out and they didn’t realize how flammable the building was because they had accelerants all through the place and they burned alive. Some believe it was started inside the compound and they intentionally burned the place down. The videos I saw, I would lean towards the former than the latter but there was no definitive either way from what I remember.

The FBI tactical team were just that. Byron Sage may have negotiated a peaceful outcome had the "cowboys" not done what they did. No matter what you say about this, burning children to death is never the answer.

You can think whatever you want about who escalated the situation, but it is disturbing the way that mini series paints the portrait of David Koresh. The guy was yet another pedophile cult leader.

What would be reckless about writing a book full of lies about what happened? Probably helped sell a shitload of books. The FBI and ATF don't sue people for lying about them in books. As long as you're not under oath it is not a crime to tell the most outrageous lies imaginable. And the fact that they call this a documentary doesn't mean there is any truth in it. Ever see the anti-fracking "documentary" Gasland? Virtually every word in it is a lie or half truth, but it got nominated for all kinds of prizes and nobody got sued, arrested, beat up, killed or anything.

Gary Noesner the lead negotiatior for the FBI (Michael Shannon in the show) has an AMA up on Reddit right now. Interesting stuff. Here's the link and what he said about the show.

"Again, it is a mix of extremely accurate and some fiction. The show is "based on" real events, it was not a documentary. I think overall it presents a fairly accurate picture of what happened and both the internal and external conflicts."

Ironic that someone started this post. We started Waco last night as well. Bottom line from Waco and Sandy Ridge - when the feds come to serve you a search warrant, don’t be a dick. It didn’t have to go down like that.

25 years ago, if I had said the government killed them because David Koresh had dirt on Bill and Hillary, everyone would have said “you’re a conspiracy theory lunatic”

Today, if I made that same statement, the consensus would be “well, that’s a pretty logical theory”
