So I performed a cursory internet search on volunteerism. What I discovered is that Tennessee being the volunteer state is a misnomer.

According to the following sites here is what I discovered.

Volunteeringinamerica.gov list Tennessee ranking a paltry 34 of the states even Illinois is ranked above Tennesssee at 30. Utah was número uno between the years 2012-2014.

247wallst.com has a top ten list Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin where listed. Absent from that list was Tennessee.

NU spends over $550 Million annually in research. They have 10 libraries with more than 6 Million Volumes and over 15 TB of digital information.

All of this, and you can't correctly utilize Google to find out why Tennessee is known as the Volunteers. Sad.

Specifically, it was due to the valor as well as the number of the soldiers who served under General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. Many of them had been with Jackson before 1812 and had fought local Indians under him.
Later, when they heard that fellow Tennessean Sam Houston was involved in a fight with Mexico, many volunteered to get involved in that war too. The most famous of these volunteers was Davy Crockett.
So, it is really not about volunteering to do the dishes or volunteering to babysit, rather volunteering to kick butt.:cool:

Della I believe you have to research your facts more thoroughly. If I recall my history it dates back to The Mexican War. Just saying.

Tennessee's moniker as the Volunteer State is a well earned tribute to thousands of men who made a difference for our country. You people (as VFF notes above) helped elect the absolute worst president in the history of the country. I thought he had taught you to apologize for things like that.

It basically means if you take the state of TN, we will, happily, go kick the rest of the world's ***. If needed. Please see the War of 1812, Mexican American War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Veitnam and Desert Storm.

Excuse me but seem to remember that the volunteers lost that war against slavery.

Funny thing about that. Most people from the north say the war was about slavery. Most from the South say it was not about slavery. I haven't studied it enough to know. Slavery was on its way out regardless.

But it was the South that lost the war, of course, not just Tennessee. Tennessee actually provided some of the top leaders on both sides: Union Admiral David Farragut and Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Farragut known for his "damn the torpedoes" quote. Forrest is a controversial figure but should not be. Robert E. Lee said he did not use Forrest as effectively has he could have and was the one figure from the war he regretted not meeting in person.

"The East Tennessee Convention was an assembly of pro-Union delegates primarily from East Tennessee that met on three occasions during the U.S. Civil War. The Convention most notably declared the secessionist actions taken by the Tennessee state government on the eve of the war unconstitutional, and requested that East Tennessee, where Union support remained strong, be allowed to form a separate state that would remain part of the United States. The state legislature denied this request, and the Confederate Army occupied the region in late 1861"

East Tennessee was pro Union and tried to secede from the state. There aren't many Plantations in the mountains.;) Therefore, if you are saying, East Tn lost due to being occupied by Confederate troops in 1861, I guess you are right. If you are saying, East Tn was in favor of secession from the Union, you are wrong.
Either way, you are excused.:)

Being the representative Southernor on this board, I have been on many threads discussing the cause of the Civil War and the apologist debates about Forrest. The audience is not receptive.

Not exactly. East Tennessee sided with the Union before and during the Civil War. Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee sided with the Confederates. So, East Tennessee won the Civil War, and Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee lost it.

That video begs the question; Why was Slavery not abolished before the war? The Republicans (anti slave) had a 51% majority and the white house. Why did they not abolish it with those numbers? The Emancipation Proclamation was not delivered until 1863, why?

Our founding fathers new that slavery was an issue. They tabled the discussion to a future date. The formation of an independent nation was their primary concern in the 1700's.

IF Illinois is forced to take credit for Obama, Please accept that you Tennessee rednecks are 100% responsible for GEORGE W BUSH. Forget Florida. If you morons weren't so GUN Happy and had to punish Al Gore, maybe the last 15 years would have been very different.

Plus, not everyone who went to Northwestern or is even on this message board lives in Illinois.

In 1641, Massachusetts became the first colony to authorize slavery through enacted law.[10] Massachusetts passed the Body of Liberties, which prohibited slavery in many instances, but did allow for three legal bases of slavery.[10] Slaves could be held if they were captives of war, if they sold themselves into slavery or were purchased from elsewhere, or if they were sentenced to slavery by the governing authority.[10] The Body of Liberties used the word "strangers" to refer to people bought and sold as slaves, and this term would eventually equate to Native Americans and Africans for people of the colony.

As far as I know, the main criticism about Forrest surrounds 1) his owning/trading slaves, 2) the Klan, and 3) Ft. Pillow.

#1 is a write-off because of guys like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson who owned slaves. And Jefferson who liked having sex with slaves.

Regarding #2, as soon as the Klan became what it is now, he got out of it. BTW, liberal hero Robert Byrd and Supreme Court justice Hugo Black were Klan members when we knew it was a bad thing. So #2 doesn't figure.

As far as Fort Pillow goes, they were given a chance to surrender, chose not to, and it pissed off the Confederates. It was part of Forrest's command but he wasn't even there. This Encyclopedia Britannica article discusses it. Ironically, written by someone who is now a prof at UT. It does not mention that Forrest was found not guilty of any wrongdoing by a Congressional inquiry. I'm sure Sherman did stuff much worse than Forrest did.

100%? The election was held only in Tennessee?

I'm with you on Bush, though. I don't like George H.W., I don't like W. and I don't like Jeb.

You have to wonder how Al Gore would have done as president. What hurt him in his "home" state is that he really never lived here. Pretty sure he does not live here now, which says it all.

We didn't have much to choose from in that election.

The normal counter against NU fans which spans geographical boundaries is "elitist snobs." Since I am both Southern and an NU grad, I get to be a redneck elitist snob. Or is it elitist redneck snob?

Got it but thought I would try to lighten the mood as you have tried to do previously. To continue in that vein and with another answer, people from Illinois are generally too boring to have a colorful derogatory nickname.
