I agree. This is UK’s biggest competition right now. Selfishly I want Reed to go to UK but I’m afraid this might be the best fit for Reed. Honestly I am surprised Virginia offered this early. They are very selective in their offers and typically don’t offer unless they know they have a decent chance for an acceptance. We shall see but it will definitely be a while before he pulls the trigger.

There would be no pressure to live up to the namesake and he can just play and enjoy his college experience. I have a feeling Virginia is his landing spot unfortunately

If Cal is still Cal and Kentucky is still Kentucky, we can’t lose Reed to anywhere for any reason imo.

I’m sure it’ll be fine, but this is a must for us if we’re going to have a shot at something truly special before Cal calls it quits here.

just my .02.

Do you have some scoop on this one LB?
Not sure what my weight has to do with it, but he and his family are obviously amongst the biggest UK fans in existence. He and has parents have been working towards the offer and opportunity for years. You can literally see the relief and excitement on all their faces anytime you see them now. However, they are also a respectful and smart family. They will hear other pitches and likely take visits, but unless something goes bad at UK, Reed is among the biggest locks UK has ever had.

I like it when you play coy, Lead Belly

Yeah, that about covers it.
That, and Virginia isn't that far from home either. Lots going for Virginia in his recruitment so I wouldn't be as confident as some who say he is a UK lock. Maybe he'll end up at UK, hope so, but I think he's going to look over his options carefully.

Is Jeff a Cal fan or not? As much as he loves UK, if he doesn't see eye to eye with Cal and his plans for Reed, I can easily see Reed going to UVA. Just wondering if anyone has any insight on Cal and Jeff's relationship.

I'm not making any prediction because there are just too many angles to recruiting. My gut tells me he'll go to UK and although this board exists in part for people to share their feelings and any information they might have about UK basketball, I think that it does no one any favors to burrow trouble and always see the glass as half empty. Virginia is one of the best programs and has been for several years now, but Shep is a Kentucky boy, his dad helped us win No 7 and UK is a very solid school academically regardless of what Virginia offers. Former successful NBA players rarely return to complete their Bachelor's degrees if they have successful NBA careers because a BA is really just a ticket to graduate school and has been for a very long time. With all the financial opportunities a former UK player has within the state and elsewhere, it's easy to understand why not that many multi millionaires return to college for another 2 or 3 years to procure a ticket to another career after their NBA days when they are worth millions and have so many other paths to making more money if they so choose.

Because they have a national title winning coach, routinely finish in the top 3 of the ACC, and average like 25+ wins a season over the last decade?
And a player like Reed would be featured in Virginia's offense. The chances of that happening playing for Cal are slim.

Why is Virginia so high on his list?
Because he can go there and play 35 minutes a game. Here at Kentucky he will get 10 to 15 minutes. Here he will have 2oe3 5stars playing ahead of him. It won't matter whether they are better than him or not they will play ahead of him because they will be considered better NBA material. Cal goes more with draft potential than actual basketball skills. Wasn't that pretty obvious last season ?

I promise not a single recruit cares about that.

Care about it? Maybe not but it will always be a stigma that sticks with Virginia and Tony Bennett. Players like to win and they like to play for winners. Again, not likely a decision factor but not something you want as an “accomplished” to be discussed by recruits.
