But.....but Jay Wright is the standard bearer now.
I think they beat Marquette they will be at home but you never know. They just lost so much talent from last year I was surprised they were doing as good as they were in the Big East after getting smacked at home by Michigan and losing at home to Furman.
Sign me up for three straight losses to also rans, Jay Wright with that secret recipe.
It's hard to do it after losing what he lost. Remember, we went to the NIT after winning it all.

Yeah, people forget that we were ranked 25th going into the Florida game and that is when we lost Noel.
He's damned good, but it's pretty clear this is a transition year for them. They're bringing in some solid players next year.

Who cares, that team was not going to get past the second round. Ryan Harrow nor Archie Goodwin was going to lead us.
Common sense cares when posters are using the Nit as an example but ignore a glaring injury. It doesn’t matter how good that team was, what they weren’t was an NIT with Nerlens. The NIT year is an ultra weak point.
You are what your record says you are. The team was a NIT team and anything else is conjecture.
That wasn't the point. The point is that even National Title coaches have down years. Villanova is having one.
You edited, it was an NIT team but only a complete dumbass would act like that team was NIT bound with Nerlens. And only a buffoon would use it to prop up an argument but not want to acknowledge that his injury was the reason an NIT happened.
We actually started to look decent.
But it's a huge reset when both our offense and defense revolved around one guy who gotten injured.

The NIT happened but I’m not obtuse and use it as a debating point as if we had a complete team. Did Jay Wright lose his best player this year? No you say. Well that’s what makes it a stupid point.
Villanova choked for years until Jay got lucky with a couple of classes, got that perfect mix. Now he’s back to normal, you are what your record says you are and they’ve lost 4 of 5 against the mediocre. No excuses and all.
My point wasn’t to make the NIT appearance a focal point. The point I’m trying to convey is that it’s perfectly normal to have a down year after a championship year. Just so happened the only one that Cal has won, we did go to the NIT the year after.
Some on here are hating on Jay, where we have no room to talk. Jay’s 2 is > than Cal’s 1, like it or not.
The NIT was the total focal point for several in this thread but unless Wright had his best player get hurt then it’s about as poor a comparison as one could make. It’s also title or bust, Jay has flopped many more years than Cal. Villanova were the kings of high seed that got beat early until he got the right group.
That doesn’t make Wright the wizard like some make him out to be, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jay never won another one. Billy Donovan found lightning in a bottle and won two titles yet he had a number of flops. Jays a good coach but the only titles matter crowd have overvalued him.
Wright has done a heck of a job lately but I didn’t think this would be a good season for them from the start. They returned their 2 weakest starters and very little bench production and brought in a freshman class that is solid but will take time to develop.
Got no issues with Wright but this is definitely a down year. They have a better freshman class coming in and will have some returnees next year. They’ll be quite a bit better.

You don't luck into two national titles. One? Ehhhh, maybe Kevin Ollie who had a guy carry him that a previous coach recruited.
Nerlens was one of the most impact ful injuries this decade. Kentucky makes the tournament with him and its a total different look.
Pick a team.. Any team.. And remove their best player.. Chances are they are losing more games without him. Kentucky lost him at the worst time, and lost just enough games to put them in the NIT.

Jay finally is getting to experience what UK, Duke, & others experience every year...early NBA draft entries.
The luck is in recruiting not coaching. If Wright is such a title guru then why all the other early exits in his career? It’s because you have to get lucky in recruiting, it always boils down to that and it’s the difference in these coaches.
