in regard to the request made on the Sidneys for the bank records, tax returns etc.:

Wrote Williams, the NCAA spokesman: "In every case, the NCAA determines which records are necessary to reach an accurate and well-informed decision. There is extensive case precedent for requests of specific information, including bank records, if that information is relevant to the case."

Is there ANY other case that anyone knows of, in the past, where someone had to turn over these types of records to gain college eligibility?? I would think there is definitely NOT extensive case precedent for this.

I'm sure they did it before, maybe moreso for international players coming over to check for professional play. Maybe for guys like Riek as well since there were rumors of being paid by agent. But I doubt it's been to this magnitude and being discussed in the open.

Why would there not be? I imagine most people, who receive large sums of cash or payments, deposit those funds in a bank account. Even if they did not and for example paid for a Escalade in cash. You would want to see the bank account of the player to see if they had the income to make the notes or downpayment or payoff or any irregular deposits made. Also, I am sure bagmen have bank accounts from which to withdraw funds. Young was withdawing cash on a regular basis to pay the Coach in the Means (Alabama/Memphis) case. I would be very suprised if the NCAA had NOT asked for bank records in that case.

I certainly don't have all the details of the Sidney case. However, just from reading Veazy's blog and article, the Sidneys must be saying Grandma payed the note on the $1,000,000 house and other expenses I am sure. Now the NCAA wants proof Grandma had the revenue or funds in the account to pay the expenses. Also, even if Grandma's account had the funds. The NCAA will want to look at the deposits to find the source of revenue. Another big assumption here.....I assume they want to reconcile the bank deposits to the income on the tax returns as well. To determine if maybe some large payments went throught the account and unreported on the tax return and therefore suspicious.

Regardless though, you can not base a case on simply interviews and testimony. People lie. At some point, especially when funds are moving around, you need documentation. The NCAA probably simply wants documentation to make a decision.

This is just me talking. But this whole thing has stunk from the begining. We just need to let it go. If he is cleared, I just do not how much fun it will be to hear this story rehashed every game State plays in.
