A May 8, 1969 Targum article interviewed Rutgers athletes about the attitude of taking football and sports up to a higher level, “… our whole athletic department is full of men who are contented with second class and keeping Rutgers at the level with small private schools like Lehigh, Lafayette and Colgate,” chimed in one of the frustrated athletes. “It’s good for some of the young coaches like Jim Valvano to get out on their own, and it will only be time before we lose other good coaches like (swimming coach Frank) Elm, basketball coach Bill Foster and Frank Burns of the football team because of our stuffy policies.”

I believe that we had the chance to hire Valvano during one of our coaching changes but passed because of the situation at NC State. Terrible decision.

It's funny how Rutgers is quick to pass on coaches during a search because of past issues. Yet, the so-called clean and morally good coaches come here and create a national scandal or something embarrassing with a lot of help from Rutgers.
Rice: scandal and embarrassment
Hill: embarrassment
Flood: scandal and embarrassment
Rutgers: firing Water was an embarrassment
Rutgers: Shea & Ash-holding on to them too long because of money or image it sends by firing them.

Is the NC State controversy (which was nothing really) the reason Rutgers distanced themselves? I think naming the practice court for him was a joke. His name should have more of a presence at the RAC, not just his wall of fame..One of the most iconic speeches not just in sports has RU all over it but you'd never know he was ever here when you go to a game.
