Went 10 for 10 on his last 5 passes and threw for almost 500 yards and 5 TDS. As a freshman.

Can do it all.

Uh, I hate to agree with the A-hole from California, but when he's right he's right. The kid is the best college quarterback I've seen in a long time. I thought so the first time I saw him. And tonight's performance has to convince everyone. You give him a running game and I don't know how you stop him.
Oh yeah.....and he's a freshman.

Let's see who/what will be the excuse for this loss:
A. The officiating
B. Injuries
C. The sanctions
D. The NCAA
E. Herbstreit &Fowler
F. Jim Delaney
G. The Russians
H. All of the above?

A lot of PSU fans on BWI ate blaming Blacknall and Bowen for being suspended. They say that the first two McSorley intercepts wouldn't have happened if Blacknall was playing, and the frosh LB who was exposed late in the game when Bell got hurt wouldn't have been playing if Manny Bowen was available.

I hope that Bowen and Blacknall at least enjoyed watching the game, LOL.

Not to rub it in on kjb, whose company I thoroughly enjoyed, but if PSU couldn't get b

Have to disagree with you on this one. Darnold is a better passer than Watson by a fair amount. And he's 19! Kid's amazing. As always, I'm in complete agreement with Cali on this one.

Was that your first time seeing him play?

He doesn't have a good arm. He has an amazing arm. Strong and accurate. Can run and has unreal pocket sense. Barring injury he goes higher in the draft than Watson does. Watson can run better, but his arm is nothing like Darnolds. Kid was dropping darted dimes the whole game.
We'll see where they go. They are both phenomenal talents with different systems. Watson has a better supporting cast of WRs, so his job is a little easier. And Darnold has ballers who make plays--strong hands, aggressive to the ball, and smart when the ball is in the air. The difference in the NFL is you have to be very fast out of the pocket if they run a spread, and from what I see it is more likely that Watson will be drafted for that system and Darnold could be drafted for a pocket team due to his arm strength and accuracy. But if these were the two Heisman candidates this year and the vote was taken two weeks ago, Watson wins it. And I think he'd win it if the vote were taken tomorrow.

That could have been the best college football game I've ever seen, and I had seats in the corner of the endzone for the Va Tech miracle catch.

I guess we will see. Not sure how you put Watson in Darnolds class after that performance. That last throw was a throw you only see in the NFL.

They mentioned it was for academics

No they didn't. In fact, they specifically said that it was not academics very early in the game and I posted as such very early in this thread.

You, Professor, will appreciate this--academic "issues."
Man, that's a shame. I used to do workshops for the RU football and basketball teams on test-taking skills. The first thing I would tell them is, "Guys, you are all giants. You stand out. Show up for class. If you don't, you are disrespecting the prof, and everybody knows it. If you actually raised your hand once and tried to answer a question, you'd be a legend. Most profs want to pass you. Meet them halfway!" Some actually listened.

Biggest disappointment:

They cut away from the post game too quickly to get to the Sugar Bowl and I wasn't able to enjoy the sad and/or crying State Penn fan camera shots. Incidentally if anyone has found any on the net so far please post them, I need a good laugh. (not old ones--ones from today)

I unfortunately know all too well what it's like flying coast to coast after a heart breaking defeat. It warms my heart that I know tonight I'm not alone in knowing how that feels.

It was not academics ... in fact it was mentioned many times all over including on here and in the TV broadcast ... not sure why RaRa is pulling information from no where - they were on jet skis on a bowl excursion, but got lost and then were late or missed team dinner meetings.

His game was obviously impressive, but one game doesn't make a guy the best QB in the country. There's a reason Watson was up for the Heisman and Darnold wasn't, and the Heisman committee knows football better than most of us do. That isn't a knock on him any more than it would be a knock on Barkley--he will be a legit Heisman candidate next year and so might Darnold, depending on how their seasons go. But this year Darnold's body of work didn't rise to that level.

Remember when Charlie Ward won the Heisman and wasn't even drafted? He ended up playing pro basketball for the Knicks. I bring this because someone can be dominant in college but not be considered the most desirable player. Watson, at least to me, is more polished right now. That's shouldn't be a surprise because he is more experienced. He reads defenses a bit better and his quickness out of the pocket is a bigger asset in extending drives.

What you don't understand is that jet skis is a credit-bearing course at PSU.

Darnold did not start until game 5 I believe. Browne started vs Bama and Sam came in later in the season.

Exactly.

Please quit killing the narrative that these are kids who don't show up for class and are academically inferior. I know they were All-B1G academically but that is way overblown...Franklin probably approached and threatened their professors.

It wasn't one game. Kid has been lighting it up since the moment he stepped on the field. The reason was Darnold didn't start till the 4th game. Not sure how you can say read defenses better. Darnold completely carved up a good Penn St. D. He is very good at extending plays. I'll be shocked if he isn't a serious Heisman contender next year. As a sophomore.

Best friend a USC fan.

Glad they beat Franklin's Follies... though Barkley IS a stud (how great would it have been if he had come to RU?) / Mc Sorley IS a good QB.

But USC's Frosh QB ...GOLD! Hoping Lewis can bring some of that magic to RU later this year. He needs players surrounding him...

Let's hope that Ash can close the deals he's made / catch a few more before they roll up the awnings.

It was late in the game after the injury. The game announcer did say academics. Maybe a mistake on his part but since I coach in college it made me think about if semester grades were out already.

They said very clearly early in the game that the suspensions were not academics related. See my post on P1.

I didn't hear the earlier statement but this was late in the game when the PSU player was out with the arm injury and the announcer was talking about the suspension hurting PSUs depth. It made me think about grades being out so I'm pretty sure academics were mentioned. As I said maybe a mistake on his part

Well maybe then USC can put together a team soon that will take a NC away from Alabama. Nobody else can. Most of them aren't even close: Texas, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, Florida State, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon. All of these blue-chip names and I don't think any of them could beat Alabama. Some of them definitely COULD NOT (cough cough Texas, Notre Dame this year...).

Actually, they did say it was for academic issues. If they're wrong on that, they're wrong. But they said it in the second quarter.

This would have been the very debate the Heisman voters would have had. It's not like Watson would get 20% of the votes to Darnold's 80%. Watson is a seriously good ball player and so is Darnold. Depending on which team I'm drafting a QB for would make the difference in which one I'd take.

No they didn't. Early in the game they specifically said it was for non-academic issues.

Midway through it one of the announcers said it was for academic reasons. I don't give a **** why he missed the game and hadn't heard anything about it until they mentioned it. If they presented it poorly, or if one of the commentators got it wrong, I don't care. Two guys missed the game and it may have cost you on the defensive side. Whether waverunners or academics, the guys fvcked up and they missed playing in a great game.

Looks like you think that's a great comeback and dig at the RU fans that tick you off
But putting the suspensions in the same type of reply to you that you're giving RU fans, maybe they got suspended for a shower incident .
