If USC wants to entice Christobal, they should be recruiting his wife who may prefer the LA area to Eugene. She seemed to wield significant influence when he turned us down.
Family aside Mario leaving Oregon for USC would be monumentally stupid

Bob Stoops would be USC's best choice (if, he wanted the job).

1. He wouldn't be intimidated by the job;
2. Recruiting is a breeze; and
3. He looks/acts extremely uncomfortable as a Fox color man.

In the mix
10 names to watch for USC job after Clay Helton's firing

7) Greg Schiano, Rutgers

He got a long look from the USC brass when Helton was elevated. While most of the leadership from that era is gone, Schiano is showing again at Rutgers that he can figure out a path to push a program to its potential. His NFL experience would also be intriguing as USC re-thinks its offensive identity. It’d cost $4 million to buy out Schiano.

My wish for Franklin to leave Penn State is indeed a dangerous one.
Bill O' Brien's building up the Nits when sanctions and image could have destroyed the Penn State football team . might have Bill looked at before Franklin if a quick replacement for this season is what Southern Cal wants
If they are willing to wait to end regular season to offer job and PSU does well this season the Penn State people might give him an extension offer that would be hard to turn down if the USCw people target Franklin
If the Nits don't have a great season, Franklin's stock will fall and the Trojans might not look his way.

Chris Petersen would be a great choice, but he left Washington because of burnout and might not want to retrurn to a high profile coaching job like USC

I just don't see Greg leaving this time. Whether it is this year or 10 years down the road as long as the administration is willing to work with him. Plus it looks like he is at ease now vs what he was like the first time here and during his time in Tampa.

I think this will be Greg's last HC stop and the one job he doesn't plan to leave.
Wouldn't be surprised if he regretted leaving RU for TB after after the lure of the pro game proved to be fools gold for him

Right now he's riding high and knows he's at a place that he enjoys coaching at.
USC even if they were truly interested might not be a place Schiano feels at home at like he probably does at Rutgers and Greg probably wouldn't want to go from a place he's revered as the coach to a place he has to prove himself again and in region that he has no real ties or connections.

By leaving its an admission that he believes he can't get it done at Rutgers in the Big Ten. I don't see that happening in a million years.

…or maybe that he wants A LOT more money…? I can’t stand LA and CA but it is appealing to many on many levels 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you think money is a big factor in his life at this time in his life? He has a very good deal at RU. Do you think he knows he isn't a good fit for USC? Because he isn't.

I have NO IDEA what value he and his family might place on money, but it might be pretty high (I’m not a friend of his so I don’t know and neither do you.)

He could be a good fit at USC…or a really awful one. You don’t know, and neither do I. If he’s approached, he’d be smart to at least consider it because it is one of the top 5 jobs in ALL of college football. Said consideration would not be disrespectful towards RU, by the way.

I hope he remains at RU for his entire career because his potential at RU is really high, but one should not minimize the lure of a top job.

No. He would be a bad choice for USC. Why? Because USC fans wants a USC guy.
And no it would be an awful idea to personally talk to USC because if that ever got out that he wants to leave after one year he will never recruit like he is now. Anywhere! Trust me his welcome back at RU he wouldn't get anywhere else. It will be the complete opposite. He isn't a good fit for a lot of reasons.

Greg's deal is worth $32 million for 8 years. He has control over the football program. He can finish the job he started. His daughter is a freshman at Bucknell. He is back in the house he built in his first tour at Rutgers. He is home and revered here. Why would he leave his family and his home he just reacquired to work for an elitist school that just fired a coach who went 46-24 and 36-13 over his tenure? Is USC going to give him an 8 year deal? They were only paying Helton $4.6 million.

That's just it. Can't see Greg being worth enough to USC to elicit the kind of payment that would in turn make it worth it for Greg to leave here and take the job.

Maybe in a few years if he turns RU into a B1G contender and the next USC guy crashes and burns. But what's he done lately to make an NC-starved blue blood write him a blank check?

If you think GS would leave here again of his own volition for anything outside of a complete lack of respect from the AD's office or the unexplainable offer of Saban type cash you haven't been paying attention the last couple years.
Agreed. Last time he was here he turned down Michigan and Miami to stay here. Then Nebraska was brought into the Big Ten, it looked like we would be left behind, and he had a chance to go to the NFL. This is a different story. We're in the Big Ten, he finally has the budget he deserves for his staff, every coach within 100 miles respects him, the relationships are all established, everything is in place and the plan is working. He's incredibly glad to be back, he's back in the house he built a stone's throw from the stadium, why in the world would he turn all that upside down for a few extra ducats? Unless he's the king of the liars, he's here to stay, provided RU doesn't try to stick it to him.

I think Bill Obrien would be a good hire for them. Solid job at PSU. I don't pay attention to the NFL but his record looks pretty good imo...4 division titles a couple double digit seasons. Now also a year as OC in the Saban halfway house and learning under Saban to me looks like a good resume'. USC recruits itself and he'll have the talent, California always puts out a ton of qbs. Not a Pete Carroll personality but a Pete Carroll or better type resume' when he got to USC.

I'm sure they have other donors but one of their biggest just died last month. The Public Storage founder B. Wayne Hughes donated 400M to the school and AD. I heard on a podcast that the LA Times did a story on him and he's one of the reasons for the Lynn Swann hire and other bad hires in the department. Of course with all that money donated there's influence.

USC has UT-Austin scale dollars and donors. For them it's "next donor up".

Greg is not turning down USC to stay at Rutgers. You don't turn down being the HC at the top program within a P4 conference (I don't count the Big 12 as a power conference without Texas and Oklahoma) to stay at a midland P4 program, even if it is in your home state. Schiano would leave for Alabama, Clemson, OSU, and USC in a heartbeat, but no worries, none of those schools will ever offer him a HC position.

Another factor is, path to the CFB and title hopes. So for Franklin, Schiano and ten other Big10 coaches who know their program ceiling is below OSU, they may just ‘take the money and run.’

But i can’t see USC wanting him…hasn’t accomplished enough in CFB yet.

I actually think this could be a year someone other than OSU takes it if they can’t get their defensive issues solved.

PSU and even B10 west Iowa seem like good contenders for the conference title. I’m not sold on Michigan yet.

Guy…Perhaps, but you get my point. Rutgers will never be the big dog in this conference. USC is a top 2-3 job, if not #1.

I doubt whoever is offered will turn it down.

That move might be the reason he knows: the grass is not always greener on the other side no matter how much money and prestige offered there.
Schiano knows he has a home at Rutgers and found happiness at RU that eluded him after he left.

Don't forget many of his present supporters felt he wasn't doing the type of job they wanted done towards the end of the Greg1 era and Schiano was facing an administration he felt wasn't supportive enough of him.
Add those 2 together and you have a HC willing to try and got a better job.
Greg2 is in a position right now, like Greg1 was when he turned down Miami & Michigan HC positions.
Schiano also knowsa he has time to fix the RU FB program, USCw would be impatient and feel he must fix quick because he's an outsider that hasn't connections to the program or area and must prove he's a great, not just good, hire

I agree I think not too many people would turn down the job. However, Chris Petersen did in 2013 and stayed in Boise so it’s not none.

Speaking of USC, this came up in my Twitter feed. The little boy has his priorities in order at a young age:

What had Paul Hackett, Pete Carroll, and Clay Helton accomplished before USC hired them? Schiano turned RU from a 2 win a year laughingstock into a competitive program. Despite the continuing perception that Rutgers is irrelevant, the powers that be at a lot of schools pay attention to what goes on here if a coach is successful.
