Good lord, the national team sucks. Help may be on the way though. The U20 team just beat France in the World Cup 3-2 and appears to have a pretty good path to the finals. France was one of the favorites to win it all.

Can someone please explain what about losing to Jamaica is “Okay.”?

Men's soccer in the US is where the 3rd and 4th tier athletes end up. There is no sense in ever getting worked up about it. The best soccer players in America have never played the sport. If that were not the case, the men's World cup results would look a lot like the Women's. Guaranteed top three finish every time.

It's not an athletics thing. It's a cultural thing.

Kids in Brazil/Argentina/Germany/France/UK etc. grow up with the ball at their feet. They develop control and ball skill from an incredibly early age, and are playing pick up games of soccer all the time. That's just not the culture in America, and no amount of athleticism can make up for that.

They do probably get their 2nd tier athletes tho. We are getting kids that are slightly more athletic than the chess team, but not good enough to get invited to pay-for-play "all star" travel ball.

You are correct. The issue is systemic. But ultimately it leads to inferior athletes playing soccer because of the lack of exposure.

Because Berhalter is a puppet who's always going to make excuses for failure instead of doing something to correct the problems. You would have thought missing the World Cup would have been a wake up call for US Soccer, but it's just business as usual. I expect the women's team is going to be in for a rude awakening in France starting with the last group stage match vs Sweden. They've got a lot more talent on that team, but just as poorly managed and coached as the men's team.

it's also about money. It is very expensive to play at the highest levels in youth clubs, and until they don't view the kids as revenue generators we won't get the best athletes in lower socioeconomic groups playing. Football is much less expensive to play. Baseball gets pricey, too, basketball is kind of intermediate.

Yeah. The youth sports system in this country is set up for profit, not to develop players. It's beginning to change with the MLS academies that are modeled after the European club academies, but even that does little for kids outside about 24 large metro areas.

This^^^

Our talent pool is huge, but once you whittle it down to the ones that actually get the chance to play at a higher level, it's a small talent pool.
