I'm sorry. Something needs to be done. We can't be this far behind the rest of the conference and behind a school like Louisville. We were making a run at top 100 not a decade ago. Engineering fell to 10th in the conference as well.

Agree. Keenum does not seem to be impacting these metrics positively.

I like the guy, but you have to compete better in these surveys.

Keenum leads from behind

Keenum has a job because he has political contacts. He is good about leading from behind, such as the State flag. He allows it to be taken down and says it was the different colleges that wanted it. No, if you want to lead then go to the Capitol and make them change it instead of passing the buck. And our ratings are in a spiral. How about some strain from this bozo

If so then we need to pay the money. Perception is reality in these matters in the present day whether we like it or not. I have no idea how in the world the general population came to consider US News the authority in this area, because it's based on next to nothing, but that's what it is and we need to do what it takes to appear favorable on it.

That's terrible. And as I said a few days ago, we shouldn't brag about an average composite ACT score of 24 for incoming freshmen. That's also terrible. I'm afraid he (Keenum) is intent on increasing enrollment numbers rather than concentrating on student quality. College is NOT the path for everybody.

Help me here. We have the largest freshman class in history and largest enrollment in history. What else do these rankings do besides serve as a recruiting tool?

Increasing enrollment and increasing standards hardly go hand-in-hand. That being said, do you have any idea the criteria that U.S. New adopts? Is this the only evaluation available to you?

The Mississippi schools will have a really hard time moving up because of the Ayers settlement and our admissions standards for in-state students. If you're a Mississippi high school graduate with a pulse, you can get into MSU, OM, USM, etc. no questions asked. Sadly, a lot of students who shouldn't be at a 4 year university in the first place wash out during or after their freshman year.

This is why I always say that MSU (and Ole Miss and USM) people need to be heavily concerned with how the state of Mississippi fares economically in the future. That is our primary recruiting ground. I know Ole Miss has many out of state students but I would say most of those are children of alumni, and if not, it is only a matter of time before these metro area kids end up in a school much closer to them as those schools grow (example, the countless schools in Georgia or Texas such as Kennesaw, GA Southern, North Texas, etc.). Recruiting out of state cannot be depended upon in my opinion and creates a top heavy situation that eventually topples.

The population decrease ie brain drain is very concerning to me (I realize I am a part of it). Most people do not even think about it, and Mississippi continues to lag behind the states it is competing with for talent.

Catvet will not like this, but I believe it starts with rebuilding the very few urban areas in the state, namely Jackson and Meridian.

This poll is mostly a bunch of political bull. Using these parameters, there is no way Ole Miss should rank higher than State.

namely...Meridian.

Yeah...good luck with that. Meridian is so riddled with crime these days that even the good areas are becoming shady. Any money sent Meridan's way will just be put in some crook politician's back pocket. No, there are good paying jobs to be had in Mississippi already, but people need to quit majoring in things like Petroleum Engineering, History, and Library Science in order to find them. Lord willing, when my son reaches college age, I'm going to push him towards Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, or Software Engineering. Those are tough degrees, but all are offered at MSU, have a high starting salary, and have job openings here in the state.

I think those polls are baised. If you want to engineer in MS, LA, AL, or any other southern state. You can compete with any other college, if not surpass them. Hell, it doesn't even matter how good of a student you were in school, it matters how good a worker you are.

Your thought process is just like everyone else's. I'm not saying it will be easy or that I am volunteering for it. We cannot abandon our cities and give them over totally to the filth. Your mindset reminds me of someone who's never been out of Mississippi, no offense.

As for your jobs comment, I highly doubt there are engineering jobs sitting vacant. If employers cannot fill them with MS people, they'll get them somewhere else. Problem is, those jobs aren't there on the same scale as other states.

What little resistance that was given in the fight for Jackson has been lost. There was once a chance to save the town, but too many politicians were worried about their own personal privileges, and the rest simply didn't know enough to care, until it was way too late.

About half the city should be returned to nature, if nothing else .

You say that, but I predict in about 10 years, you'll see an influx of young professionals into the city again, or 'gentrification' as they call it. Jackson is about 10 years behind Birmingham, which is about 10 years behind Memphis, which is about 10 years behind Atlanta.

They certainly may not stay and raise families there, however. I wouldn't. I would not want to be governed by the clowns that run these big cities now, everything suffers because of it.

You'd be completely wrong. Ole Miss is a destination school. I dropped my kid off at daycare (I live in New Jersey) last year, and met someone whose best friend is enrolling at Ole Miss. No connections to the school or Mississippi, just heard it was a fun party school with a pretty campus. I'm sure Katy Perry factored in there as well. That's becoming the norm, and it's good for Ole Miss in some ways, and terrible for it in others (less political clout in Mississippi as so many alumni leave the state).

Not that I disagree that Mississippi needs some nice urban areas, but Meridian??? It has a population of under 40k. Jackson, Gulfport, Southaven, Hattiesburg, and Biloxi are all bigger, and all of those are also basically immediately adjacent to other decent sized municipalities. The places Mississippi needs to grow that actually have a realistic chance are the Coast and South Memphis. It would be preferable to grow the Coast since south Memphis will always be dominated by Memphis. Jackson will grow, but it will likely be a lot of growth driven by the seat of state government being there, which is not going to help lift the state as a whole up.

I hate the people on this board that just want to give up on Jackson that is the exact mentality that causes the problem. The arguments against Jackson are the same old tired ********. 1 we have corrupt politicians. Every town from Jackson to Chicago has corrupt politicians that is pretty much everywhere. Name one major city that has never had problems with corrupt politicians. 2. There's so much crime in Jackson. As compared to where? Most major cities these days have serious crime problems.
My point is nothing in Jackson or Mississippi for that matter will ever change if we just say well Jackson is lost no reason to try. I am very proud to be from Mississippi and I am sorry others on this board don't feel that way. " I don't know if I am going to heaven or hell but I know I am going from Jackson". Medger Evers

How the heck will it not help the whole state? A growing metropolitan area at the center can only be a good thing.

I agree with your other assessments, but ignoring Meridian and even Tupelo would be a mistake in my opinion. If you want to develop the Coast, don't do it right on the water at the minimum. The Memphis suburbs are what they are, most of those people work in Memphis.

I am convinced that most people who say these things are, 1 - very selfish and can't see beyond their own yard, and 2 - certainly have never spent much time or lived in other states to see the difference. I am talking about our immediate competitors, like Alabama.

17 you man all Hoover is a bunch of rich people that think their **** doesnt stink. I have family that live there and I will admit they are rich ******** as well. If you love Alabama so much then how about don't bring your *** back to Mississippi. Selfish all you have to do is see mountain brook or Hoover to see selfish. Inner city Birmingham is going down just like inner city Jackson. Instead of people like you trying to make the problem better all you do is say well I am going to go to the burbs and talk ****. For the record ******* I have lived in several different states and I am sorry I have a love for my own home state. Let me guess you are one of those ******** that couldn't get into bama or auburn came to Mississippi state and acted superior to the people of Mississippi. Not able to see beyond my own yard if you live in Hoover you are afraid to leave your own yard. Let me guess you go to inner Birmingham once twice a year and turn your nose up. So again on behalf of the people of Mississippi that are proud to live here 17 you. Please don't ever come back to Mississippi your *** will not be missed.

Didn't mean it as an insult to those students, it was more of a jab at the system in general. The mindset that everyone should attend a 4 year university straight out of high school is lazy and short-sighted. My brother dropped out at State after his first year because he decided that college just wasn't for him. He picked up a trade, and makes more than I do with multiple college degrees. And I'm not rich by any means, but I'm comfortable. I'd say about a quarter of the students at Mississippi public universities have no business being there. Maybe nationwide. There are more productive routes they could take with regard to their interests and skills.

Actually, you're wrong. Inner City Birmingham is on the up swing and has been for a few years now. I'm not saying it's great but it's been moving in the right direction for a while now. You should come over for a weekend sometime.

Hoover, Jackson is dead. Lack of leadership, corrupt politicians and an explosion of crime, make Jackson the hell hole it is. Put a fence around it, and let it become Snake Plisken's escape from Crime city.

Let us also remember that us and TSUN serve the students from the worst state in public education in the US. The ranking could actually be worse considering MS keeps most of its brightest in the state for college. My wife is a college counselor at the best public high school in the state of Louisiana, and she always says State has a favorable reputation down here in New Orleans.
