The baseball coach is still locked down with Jim Schlossnagle. However, John Cohen is still in Destin at the SEC meetings and this has caused a bit of a delay in the finalization of the process. Schlossnagle has informed TCU AD Donati of his intention to leave but has not informed the TCU team as of this afternoon. This is expected to happen in the next day or so and the announcement of Schlossnagle at Mississippi State will occur soon after. The contract will incentive-laden with a base salary of $1.8 million. TCU is working to promote Kirk Saarloos as their head coach and plan to have that in place shortly after Schlossnagle officially makes the move.

Skeptical as in , you don't believe we will pay it, or don't believe we should pay it? We are paying it, btw.

If that's what it took then I have no problem with it. When finished the Dude will take in more money than any other stadium, might as well use it.

I’m not here to say we should or shouldn’t pay it. I’m skeptical of the source.

Skeptical because of the source? Or skeptical because of how high the number is?

It seems reasonable to me that to get the highest paid coach in the country to leave his job, we'd give him a little bit of a boost. I am somewhat surprised we're willing to give a raise to the highest paid coach in the country, but it does make sense. We just dumped $40M+ (or $50M? Have no clue what the final number was) into a new stadium. We were going to end up paying somebody close to a $1M per year regardless. Paying an additional $1M to get as close to a guarantee as you can to win in the new stadium doesn't seem crazy. If we go back to being ******, I suspect that stadium investment starts to look bad fairly quickly.

Plus, it makes sense that Cohen as a former baseball guy would be willing to put more resources into baseball than would be typical, plus our school has historically emphasized baseball, plus we have the fan/donor support (as evidenced by the new stadium and left field lofts). So it doesn't seem implausible to me at all, and maybe not even surprising, even if it seems surprising at first glance.

I’m not skeptical that we could or would pay up to that. But I’m skeptical of this report, primarily because of the source. That is to say, if Will Sammon or Kendall Rogers reported the hire and that we paid a base of 1.8MM, I would trust it even though I thought the base salary would be lower.

Now some 22 hours later, the report seems even more dubious because literally no one else is reporting it.

Since you are in the know-

When do they plan to announce?

With such a monumental hire at stake, why not get the deal done ASAP?

Not in the know, but my bet is Scholssnagle is announced Monday morning. Not sure why they haven't announced it already.

My TCU friend just told me a decision has been reached out there this morning

so something should be announced soon on whether he is our guy or not our guy. Just passing along, worth what you pay for it.

Cohen put the reason out there yesterday, plain as day, so yes you are sure, you just don't agree

I’m still expecting Schlossnagle- there’s too much conceding coming from the TCU side to think otherwise at this point. Also, too many murmurings of recruits being told by Cohen that Schloss is the guy to think he isn’t the leader in the clubhouse at this point. However, I am skeptical about anything getting out this week for a variety of reasons:

1) Cohen has been in Destin all week. It’s tough to finalize any kind of deal when the boss is out of town.
2) The team is in Florida this week. You are almost certainly not going to announce the hire or probably even try to leak it until the team meets him first.
3) Last I checked, there’s nothing concrete saying Schloss has told his team at TCU yet. Plenty of rumors about how the AD has been told by Schloss, but rest assured that he isn’t leaving TCU without having a meeting with his team first.
4) What happens if Louisville gets eliminated this weekend? Maybe McDonnell gets a closer look if his team is done next week. Even if Cohen was set on Schloss and they had a handshake deal, having Dan McDonnell’s name floating around as a possibility helps in negotiating the final contract with Schloss’s agent.
5) Then all things being equal, I’m sure Cohen would rather have our season end before announcing a new coach. If we were to make it to the super regional, I bet we’d still announce next week, but if given the choice, Cohen would rather wait until the 2018 season was over before announcing the coach for 2019.

Lots of moving parts to this that the average fan might not consider, and that’s why I think we are going to be in a holding pattern until next week. I’m still extremely confident that we will get a great coach, and that coach will probably be Schlossnagle with an outside possibility of Dan McDonnell. Anything other than those two would be a big surprise to me.

I think the right move was to announce yesterday or today, but for whatever reason or reasons we couldn't get it done. Now I expect Schloss to meet with the team on Monday and us announce on Tuesday.

The issue with that is you want him to meet with our guys before making a public announcement and press conference- that’s not possible with the team in Tallahassee. He also probably hasn’t met with his current team yet, and contract details getting hashed out is tough with Cohen not being able to meet...

The timing is just weird right now. I think in Cohen’s head a couple of months ago, this all was going to play out differently. He probably didn’t think we would make a regional, and he probably thought TCU (or whoever’s coach we get) was going to be playing longer than us- thus we would just announce when their season is over. The opposite has happened, and it has caused some unexpected delays.

There would have to be a sense of urgency meeting with the TCU players because their season is over. The players are going to be scattering all over the country to go home or to play summer ball, if they haven't already.

This has "MSU fans super excited about coaching rumors only to have MSU pull out at the last minute because new coach got a last minute deal from TCU to keep him and MSU fans end up with blue balls" written all over it.

Schloss wouldn't have gone public with his interest if a deal wasn't already in place. Period. If a deal wasnt in place and he wound up not getting the job, it would make him look terrible with that fanbase.
