It's not 100% but I wouldn't foul up 3 with more than 5 seconds left. In this case it was fine because they missed the FT on purpose anyway Purdue just choked in getting the board. The reason I would never foul up 3 with more than 5 seconds left I would be afraid they would make both FT's then force either a turnover or foul you and you miss a FT and then they hit a 3 to win it. When you foul them forcing them to miss the FT with little time left all that goes out the window.

Took some balls for the UVa guy to not take the half-court heave and throw it ahead instead

I still say you should always foul up 3 the three pointer has become too automatic. Purdue just did a lot of things wrong not to mention that was a perfect missed free throw

Not against UVA. It takes them time to get an open three pointer and they didn't have time. Bad call for sure.

We have herro who’s a bucket so we should do it because he won’t miss

How many times have you seen that strategy fail? Now, how many buzzer beater highlights have you seen on Sports center this year alone? It's the high odds play.
I don’t think it’s as good if an option if you’re in the single bonus.

how do you figure? They miss the first, you rebound, game over. They make the first it's no different than double bonus.

Wow he just said he didn't miss it on purpose the FT down 2. Had he made it they probably would have lost.

Agreed. That strategy can backfire when there is more than 5 seconds or so left. It can also backfire if you accidentally foul on a 3pt shot. There are several things that can go wrong. Just about every single one of them went wrong for Purdue. They had that game in hand. Of course, if the guy hits the 2nd free throw, we're not even having this conversation.

No, I mean Purdue was in the single bonus. So up 3 they put Virginia at the line. If Virginia makes both free throws, Virginia would foul Purdue and Purdue would go to the line up 1 for the one and one. If Purdue misses the first or second free throw, Virginia can come the other way with 5 or so seconds left in a situation where Purdue can no longer foul.

It’s probably a lower probability than a team hitting a contested three, but I don’t love the idea of giving your team a chance to lose it in regulation. I’d feel differently if there were 3 or 4 seconds on the clock.

Freshman PG too. It was his only assist of the second half and Diakite's only made basket of the second half. Really a remarkable play, one of the best you will see in a game like this.

There was too much time left for that crap.
You don't foul with almost 6 seconds left on the clock. The ball was tipped all the way back to the free throw circle on the other end and they still got off the tying shot.

Doesn't the clock start on the miss? It appears to start when Virginia tips it. Rules change, so not sure.
