I was watching the Cox Cable broadcast of the Broken Arrow-Union game Friday night and there was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called for "unkind words."

That's the first I've heard of such an infraction. "Unkind words" might include a wide variety of statements, such as "our team is better than yours" or "your uniforms don't fit very well."

I believe it's a rule in HS to prevent derogatory and expletive language on the field in an effort to reduce off field problems with players in retaliation. Does it work? No idea but that's the rationale I've heard.

Isn't that (name calling) counterproductive? It just fires up the opponent. It did me many years ago.

I think old guy knows exactly what it was for but calling it "unkind words" just sounds like some special snowflake got their feelings hurt.

In Florida, it isn't expletives. But discriminatory words -- n word, f word, etc. is 15.

If a player utters "unkind words" it's a penalty, but if the target of those words responds with "so's your old lady," it's offsetting and the down is replayed.
