Who are the other guys?? I know Graves… Thought he was more “neutral” as a national level announcer… surprised he’d make that kind of comment about any college player.

Nice work UNC baseball media team!!
In that pod it’s Bradley smart and Darren Vaught, there’s Ben Upton and Noah with 11.7 podcast

I don’t know who the other is

The last guy is Danny Graves. I'm sure you know, but he was an 11 year MLB pitcher primarily with the Reds.

My problem with all these talking heads is that so many have just a superficial knowledge about all but the biggest names in college baseball. In fairness, though, up until about three weeks ago he has/had a point about Owen. I've never heard the term he used, "Judy," to describe a hitter but it wasn't flattering. Up until about 3 weeks ago Owen was primarily a hands hitter. He hit a lot of line drives and pokes that were well placed. It was and is clear that Owen has really good hand/eye coordination and contact skills, but he was not driving the ball with authority because (as you've commented many times) he moved all over the batter's box and didn't hit from a solid base. Something has changed and more frequently he's stable (not always, though) and hits against a firm front side. The result has been that he drives the ball more often. We've seen his HRs increase and the fly ball outs have much pronounced carry and are hit with noticeably more authority.

No idea what he meant by “Judy” but my wind went here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_and_Judy

because the puppet takes short little swings when she hits her husband, lol

but I looked it up and it’s a phrase from softball apparently
The term Judy was used a ton when I played slow pitch softball.. guys would swing just hard enough to get it over the first baseman or 3rd

Graves’ comment that Hull needed to “swing harder” was stupid. He was a good closer for much of his big league career, but that comment sounded like something you’d expect to come from a 10-under rec ball coach who last played ball when he aged out of little league and is only coaching so he can make sure his kid gets to pitch, play shortstop and bat lead off.

I have observed that Hull started the season off swinging almost entirely with his arms, reminding me of Ichiro who was already running when he made contact much of the time. But as Old Leaguer’s post covered so well Hull has firmed up his base and is hitting against a stiff front side most of the time now and it’s paying off in more line drives and fewer rollovers and soft fly outs to the back side, while still making consistent contact. Not “swinging harder” as Graves put it, but using his base to drive the ball harder. He’s a dangerous hitter now.
