Cecily will be special for us by the end of the season. She’s finding her game legs and appears to be much faster on the eyes than her first couple games.

I agree. You would think by now being a senior she should know better. Maybe EM might need to replace her or sub her out when she does this.
Yeah probably a reason she barely played until this year.
Hoping we get a favorable ruling tomorrow and get some talent infusion.
Man, we had two good chances to score. I have to admit that goalie did a excellent job of recovery on one of our shoots, but the other one, Cecily gave Barbacci a good pass right in from the cage. It appears should was not ready for it. The ball went right past her. IMO, when you are that close to the cage, you should always be ready to receive a pass. That was a perfect chance for us to score. We must score when we have chances like that. VA is too good of a team to not score when the shots and chances are there.
And we have a level game! Beautiful corner! Grace with a great assist to Reese in front of cage who redirects the pass home.
Oh man. Reid was essentially setting a screen, illegal.

Ugh, we just cannot get a break. It looked like incidental contact to me. Man, Reid Miller, we cannot make those kind of mistakes. This is not good at all. It was just like the football game yesterday. We was on the 8 yard line getting ready to add another score then the rain delay happens for 2 hours and some minutes. When play resume, Clemson punched us in the mouth. We let that game slip away. The same thing is happening today. We scored and then it was taken away on a mishap by Reid. The other one the ball went right by Barbacci. This is very frustrating. The girls are playing very hard.
Reid needs to do exactly that for us. Turn on the jets and get the ball into the attacking 25
Suzanne was pulling for UVA. Go figure. She’s why I typically mute games lol
5th year Molly needs to start playing like it. She needs to be sending that ball in or getting it into the circle to draw a corner. I just don’t get it

This team is so close to figuring ‘it’ out, which is why this has been so painful for me.
2 garbage goals for UVA. This was our first game we didn’t lead. The other three losses were blown leads. We are beating ourselves.

It seems like they’re getting bad breaks but gotta execute at some point.

We were sitting very close to the field. Cecily was gassed. This also happened during the Wake scrimmage (although in that case she asked to come out).
She also was sent to sideline prison to practice receiving the ball.
I do not think that are bad. They just don't have upper class leadership. All of the teams before had senior or upper class leadership and this team does not. We have to many nice people on this team. I need someone to have some fire in them. Charly B. is a senior with a tons of experience. She should or needs to lead this team. She is too quite. She needs to be vocal but she is not. One of the seniors or at two of the seniors like Barbacci or somebody needs to speak up. Light some fire in this team. You cannot expect the freshmen to do it because they are still learning the college game. Maybe a freshmen can do it. I just don't know but someone needs too. Every blue moon the coach might have to yell. EM seems to content not to do that. I am not saying to do it every game, but just when the players do not expect. As parents there is going to come a time when you are going to get mad and yell or something at your child. I think the time is now for the coaching staff to do it or something. This is going to be a very tough year for EM and the coaching staff. Maybe we can get some good news on Monday.
This season we are going to have our patience tested every game. We must stay relax with cool heads. This team is getting better. They just need time to figure how to close games etc., but we do not have a lot of time because the season has already started. We just have to put our heads down, continue to work hard in practice, believe in our selves, and understand it has to get better at some point. Keep the faith and continue to belief in ourselves as well as our coaching staff. Go Heels!
I think you nailed it. The execution is just not what it needs to be right now. A big test for Erin and the team but it could get better with some good news on eligibility.
By my eye UVA outplayed us. By a significant margin. This team just is not very good right now.
no one to relieve pressure in the midfield and no one to create opportunities in an attacking position. Once the ball clears the back line we just turn it over time and again.
in the UVA game we were relegated to just sending wild balls into the circle and hoping for the best.
the 2021 team had 6 regular season losses and only made the NCAAT by winning the ACCT. we are starting to get close to that scenario.

I asked Coach Matson way back in March - how do you replace an Erin Matson, a Ryleigh Heck? And I didn't just mean physical talent on the field. It's not easy and we are seeing not only the talent side of it, but the mental side. Those two had that killer attitude on the field, the go get a goal by yourself if you have to, the ability to drag along their teammates and not let there by any let up at all, at any time. Those players make it really easy on a coach too - we've all heard about player led teams.
Some have it - but only a few and even fewer have that at the freshman stage. So what you need is folks to step up and take charge and simply not let your team lose. The older players specifically. And we haven't seen that yet with this group. And it's not just between the lines in the 60 minutes of play. It's across the board, in the locker room, in practice, all the time.
I think the litigation dragging out hasn't helped either. On one hand, you absolutely do 100 percent what you can do to have those three on the team and eligible. On the other, it's only human nature for folks to hold out hope for that to happen and maybe think, well if we can just get them back.... A decision needs to be made one way or another and sooner than later for everyone's sake.
They win and are able to play - clearly the team gets much much better.
They lose and are not able to play - the remaining players (and coaches) had better focus up and get it going or they'll be remembered as the players that were a part of team that didn't reach the program's standard. Some of the issues on the are not talent related, but focus and drive and want to (IMO).

We have talented recruits who are not ready yet for the highest level of field hockey. We need the sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students to step up.
The offense is not aggressive. Not getting corners is unacceptable.
Midfield is not cohesive. Better passes, angles, and communication are needed.
Defense is clearly missing players. Needed to hit the transfer portal for that position in particular as at least one freshman (# 5) is not ready yet.

This team doesn’t have enough of an offensive threat as opponents are focusing defensive attention on Bruder and Antesberger. Also, they lack attacking in the wings as folks underestimate just how good Heck and Bruning were at getting the ball around the edge into the circle. Catchpoole is a weak spot in the center and the entire team looks too passive on passing.
We should get a ruling today or tomorrow. If those 3 can’t play this year, it’s gonna be a struggle. We are also missing expected international freshmen this season.

Let me start with a caveat that I am applying some unfair hindsight bias here. With that said, it is surprising to me how few transfers we brought in, considering there was roster space.
First, just for some clarity on this argument, high school recruiting now wraps up almost 2 years before a season begins. That is the most important part of roster building but it represents long-term stacking of talent that is not based on current needs. When it comes to rounding out a team there is the second cycle. College transfers and international players are both in play at roughly the same time - in the offseason prior to the current year.
So lets talk about this past off-season recruiting cycle. Here are our additions, roughly in order of their projected impact:
But we have not seen 3 of the 4 play at all, so in the end, this group has not made an impact. Throw in Shahbo losing out to Skubisz and this entire haul basically consists of back-up minutes by Moorhead so far. Almost no impact, largely due to bad luck.
But that still leaves me with two questions:
By comparison, last season our team had much more returning talent and depth, yet we still brought in MF Mendez, GK Wimmer and F Kara Heck in the portal plus Boere from NED. Three very key starters plus a top reserve.

- Int MF Micky Van Baasbank - Less information on her, but appeared to be a 2nd tier NED developmental player (which is still good) - Has not played at all; also injured?
