With us I can't remember if there was hard core evidence and if they said our coach didn't know, so there was no lack of institutional control?

And, how does the severity of the two cases compare?

The only evidence they had was a UCLA fan working at Emery Parcel Service who claims a taped package busted open with 20 $50 bills inside on the loading dock....

How did the LA Daily News get the story prior to the NCAA, hold it and just so happen to run it on National Signing Day?

Emery settled a $7M case out of court with Casey and the NCAA rescinded their show cause order.

It was their money to begin with. There is NO way a coach sending money to a recruit doesn't tape up a package tight and secure if they know it's against the rules. It was a setup, as the settlement with Emery clearly shows.

Wasn't sure if you knew that TexKat and I don't think it goes without saying! There are plenty of people, UK fans included, that believe that Casey sent that money. I'm not saying there weren't other things UK was doing back then but that one was not legit!

Wasn't sure if you knew that TexKat and I don't think it goes without saying! There are plenty of people, UK fans included, that believe that Casey sent that money. I'm not saying there weren't other things UK was doing back then but that one was not legit!

Exactly. They just needed a good excuse to open up a case and then crucify us.

Thank You! Those penalties were unbelievable! No post season for two seasons, only 3 schollies a year, no TV, etc.

And UL self imposed no post season 1 season and loss of a couple of schollies for a year! Pitino saying they had done enough to themselves.

If our scandal of the late eighties happened today it might get one postseason ban if that and nothing more . What happened here back then is paltry compared to what just occurred at UL and UNC but the NCAA had a much different mission in those days . They were out to enforce the rules as a deterrent , today's NCAA is mostly concerned with profit and making teams available to their contractual partners who paid for the best product to present .

That's why today's NCAA is lenient in enforcement , it's a business to them and they have morphed into a company . Louisville would get the death penalty had this happened in the 80's , UNC would get the death penalty also .

The NCAA still loves to grind their axe with UK whenever they can of course. When Cal was honored for his 500th win and they quickly chimed in that he didn't have that many wins because some were vacated because of the Camby and Rose cases. That was very petty on their part. And then Enes Kanter wasn't ruled eligible even though other players in similar situations were allowed to play. If anything half as serious as what has happened at UofL were to ever occur at UK I have no doubts they would lay the hammer down.

Yep. Whether by its own choosing or due to forces beyond its control, the NCAA has been defanged to a great extent. For a long time, under the rule of Walter Byers, it was a feared organization. No longer true. If you are a school with any means, you push back, deny, obfuscate, hire someone connected like Chuck Smrt, take advantage of the NCAA's very low popularity/standing, and take your chances. For several generations, you just waited to see what they decided to do to you....

What made this the Emery packing busting open impossible for me to believe is the fact that. A couple days before Dwane Casey sent the package to Chris Mills. Mills was playing in an All-Star game in Pittsburgh, PA.The old Dapper Dan Classic. Casey met Mills in his hotel / motel room the day of the game or the day before the game. If Casey wanted to give Mills $ 1000 dollars he would have done it then in Mills' room. How stupid would Casey have had to have been not to have given Mills the money in his room, instead of mailing it to him ? I believe we were probably guilty of a lot of the stuff we were accused of back then. BUT NOT THIS EMERY CRAP.

I believe the Emery employee who proclaimed the package open with $1,000 inside just happened that his brother-in-law was on staff in the sports department at the LA Times. If you haven't read the book Raw Recruits. A pretty good read!
