Dear Dr Bendapudi,

Allow me to introduce myself; my name is Butch Beard. I am a former alumni and All American basketball player at the university during 1965-1969.

To begin, I would like to congratulate you in being named president in April 2018.

I know you came to the university during challenging times and more specifically; the athletic department. As you are aware, this will be an ongoing effort into the unforeseeable future to rectify the ills of the past.

Please indulge me as I share a few of my career highlights.

* University of Louisville 1965-1969
* All American 1968-1969
* NBA Player 1969-1978
*Golden State Warrior
NBA Champion 1975
* Howard University
Head Basketball Coach 1990-1994
* Howard University
NCAA Tournament 1992
* New Jersey Nets
Head Basketball Coach 1994-1996
* Morgan State University
Head Basketball Coach 2000-2005

The reason I humbly share this list of accomplishments is to give you an understanding of my credentials in the world of basketball, both at the college and professional level, and the many years I’ve devoted to a sport I love and have dedicated the lion share of my adult life.

For me, it all began at UofL. I am still connected to several former alumni; Wade Houston, Eddie Whitehead and Dave Gilbert. These men helped to integrate the basketball in the 1960’s. However, the basketball program didn’t achieve national recognition until Wes Unseld walked onto the campus in 1964; followed by myself in 1965.

To be direct, it was home grown black Kentuckians that changed the history of the basketball program. I find it hard to believe that the university hasn’t deemed it important to honor Wes Unseld. Today’s black student athletes have no idea who blazed the trail for them. It’s important to put this in context. In the 1960’s UofL coaches were recruiting based on the premise that the University of Kentucky was a racist institution and UofL was a promise of a more progressive university. There were fifteen black athletes on scholarships during my time at the university. Without Wes Unseld or Butch Beard there would never have been a Denny Crum era of basketball. These are simply the facts, yet the university refuses to recognize someone like Wes Unseld who’s shoulders every player stands on today.

In addition, prior coaches such as Coach Drumo talked about the university helping players further their careers in and out of the university. It’s unfortunate that never came to fruition.

Which leads me to the reason for writing to you. The university has been remiss and negligent in its hiring practices within the athletic department. No black role models exist for the student athletes playing mens basketball or football. You may think assistant coaches in these sports are sufficient, they are not. Players need and want head coaches to confide in on real life issues on and off the court. Respect comes from the top; the head coach.

I speak from the experience I have had as that role mode, at two HBCU schools. I saw first generation black kids attend college and witnessed the type of guidance that’s necessary. Not every black kid playing a sport has the promise or should have the promise of going professional. Many times this is the false narrative when the real goal should be getting an education. Without relatable guidance from a person who looks like you and has traveled this road this imperative can be lost.

The university must do a better job of mentoring the student athletes and help them to be successful on and off the basketball court. UofL was the first college in the state of Kentucky to offer black student scholarships but last to have a black basketball head coach or even interview one.

I say the following both in sadness and anger but I feel I have no recourse.

Given the lack of acknowledgement to the legacy of former black players and the lack of commitment in diversity hiring I am asking the university to remove my name and accomplishments from any existing or future mention.

The university’s commitment to young black men is far from what it should look like in 2021.

I know the university in the past has attracted players by using my name, and although it may not be as relevant now, this for me is a matter of principle.

This to some may appear an act of being ungrateful. This could not be further from the truth. The truth is that the university has failed to move forward or demonstrate a commitment to a diverse athletic department and coaching staff as well as recognizing the contributions of former black players.

Quoting Doc Rivers “ Why should I love you, when you don’t love me back”.

I had always hoped for so much more from the university.

Thank you for your time

Sincerely
Butch Beard

But isn't this more blatant racism by a black person with no objective discussion?

1. Denny Crum was their coach from 1971 - 2001...and won their only 2 titles.
2. Maybe UL held on to Crum a bit longer than should have but again...he was basically their greatest coach ever in program history.
3 Then come Pitino....who won a title that was later vacated but still was a great hire and did really good job until all the hookery and addidas phone calls came home to roost.
4. Then it's Chris Mack...who was a solid hire given the situation a new coach would have to take.

So Beard needs to put down his race card and tell us all who of those 3 coaches UL should have not hired and what black coach should have been hired instead.

Also in football, Charlie Strong was a good hire and left UL for a better job. So it's not like the total athletic program is all white dudes. This is where are at as a nation...even non black people who do a good job are put into "white guilt" boxes for no wrong doing of there own.

Its ridiculous. Its just like a white athlete wanting to know why UL has never started a white running back in the modern era.

Why do people constantly use race as a reason they didnt get the job? Didnt get drafted? Didnt get paid?
It is the standard of the day unfortunately. Don't hire on merit but hire based on the Social Justice. Game be damned.

We live in a time of excuses and victimism. If the whole university were all black, including coaches, professors and janitors it still wouldn't be enough. It's never enough.

Now I’m glad the Missouri Valley Conference didn’t intervene to get him released from his LOI so he could come to UK.

For most of America's history there has been an employment quota system - 100% white regardless of qualifications or ability. It wasn't until the sixties that this began to change in a meaningful way. As shown by the posts in this thread, we still have a long way to go to ensure that black and brown people get an even break when so many think that treating nonwhite people fairly is the same as giving them an advantage.

Every race is treated fairly. We even have legislation that says so. Have for decades. What else would you propose? What would be enough, over the current situation?

Non-whites fairly? You have black colleges, black magazines, black news, BET, and minorities have more grant money for college than anyone in this country. These grants cover tuition, housing and even books.....just because theyre african american. The keys to succeed as a minority in this country are FAR greater than anywhere. How are all these opportunities still not enough? America has a paved road for minorities now.
The only thing left to do is give slave reparations and free land.

Ask him to explain why Asians are the most successful demographic group in this country (NOT WHITEY).

Nobody holding them back. Nobody whining for something free.

They come to this country, bust their asses, and rise to the top.

Amazing how that works.

Beard is being ridiculous. Really. He’s PO’d that neither he or Jerry Eaves didn’t get an interview after Padgett was released.
Didnt UL hire Charlie Strong? When it comes to sports, nobody gives a chit what color they are...they just want to win.
Anyone who blames skin color for failure is either an idiot or too unmotivated to beat out the competition. Its not 1950 anymore, but unfortunately this is going to be the new "thing".

I hope we get to the point one day where companies just hire the right man/woman for the job.

Not hiring people just to meet a quota or b/c they are scared of the left.
^^^THIS^^^
If you’re the hiring manager, you select the best candidate regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or skin color.

You are correct Totally forgot about him ....and most UL fans which they could as well. So UL has had two black football coaches out of last five coached....but Beard claims the school is racial for not more men of color in leading positions

You can’t make this stuff up

My thoughts exactly....I'd ask Beard to show me when he thought they should have interviewed a black candidate? Crum was considered an excellent get at the time and that proved true right off the bat. Pitino was best hire possible in the country at that time and was a no brainer....could've hired a black coach instead of Mack but no idea who was interested that was better considering the challenges and sanctions.

Maybe he looks at the football statues UK put up and wishes they had something for he and Unseld and he has a point there. Im guessing he wants a statue or building named after Unseld bc his jersey is already retired and Im sure his name is mentioned in many places around the UL facility and programs, etc.

Im sure UofL will reach out and discuss his concerns but part of you wants to just say, here is all of your stuff back and you are gone from the history books.

Wow. That was really racist. So he doesn’t want the most accomplished men and women leading his alma matter? He just wants them to be black? It really dumbfounds me how the social justice warriors can’t see the hypocrisy in their movement. Good grief. They are actively seek and pursuing institutional racism while claiming to fight it.

and how come it’s all about black people? What about native Americans? What about Asian, particularly Japanese, Americans?

Why isn’t anyone demanding that the Egyptians pay the Jews reparations? Why can’t the African countries who invented African slavery pay reparation?

Im not a huge conspiracy theorist but I honestly believe this whole dumpster fire is being fanned by politicians and media for money, control, and power. It’s ridiculous in a day and age with education so accessible that people are still so gullible.
