Looking at the all-time track marks for UK, Paul Baldwin ran a 13:46.24 (3rd-best mark ever at UK) at a meet at Hayward Field in Eugene in 1972. Guessing that is the name of the runner.

Baldwin was also SEC individual cross country champ in 1970 and 1971. (UK won men's SEC team championship in 1970 also.)

I took a long shot at the name and location. Would have been insane had I nailed it as it was all just a guess. I don’t even know if the person I named is a real guy.

This is a great resource for track geeks. The history of the US Olympic Trials for track. On page 155, it shows the result of the 5K. Baldwin failed to advance to the final with his time of 14:14.4. But his best as a UK runner, also at Eugene, was under 14 minutes. So maybe the pic is from another race because it definitely looks like Hayward Field.

I asked about this photo on a track page and was told the UK runner is Jim Buell. 1972 NCAA championships in Eugene. Well, I've learned two new names now. I'll try to get some info on him later.

Did a quick search. Buell was at UK from '73-'77. So maybe not him. I'll keep everyone posted. I know you enjoy track stuff over hoops and football anyhow. :joy:

His best time was probably run at Oregon’s annual track meet at Hayward field. That also happened to be the same location for the Olympic Trials in 72.

I sleuthed around on this yesterday and couldn't find much, but I did come across the name of Don Weber, who later coached UK track and field. He graduated in '72. But I couldn't find an early '70s picture of him or conclude it was him on the basis of his recent pictures. UK Track and Field has a twitter account, @kentuckytrack, if you wanna, ahem, run it past them.

The runner in the pic was 100% Paul Baldwin. I was his teammate in 1970-72.

Paul was from Flint Michigan. He came to UK in the fall of 1970 after Junior college. He and Vic Nelson tied for first in the SEC Championship that fall to lead the team to the conference win.

There were a number of connections between UK running and Nike before Nike was Nike which extended well into the current decade.

Speaking of...at the 5:45 mark in the documentary on Pre called "Fire on the Track," linked below, you can see a clip including the scene pictured in the original post! It just gets better. Hey, I'm glad to bring attention to a great runner!
