UCLA's last trip to Penn State

1967. Gary Beban , the Heisman Trophy winner that year quarterbacked the Bruins who came in ranked No. 3 in the nation.. Penn State was doing quite well with Tom Sherman at quarterback at QB and Bob Campbell running well. Campbell blew out his knee trying to stretch for extra yardage. He was also the punter and UCLA eventually won the game on a blocked punt and recovery for a TD in the PSU end zone. The final score was 15-17. The Penn State 44 defense stymied UCLA all day with Steve Smear having a huge game at DT. I was a sophomore attending that game. They would not loose again during my final 2+ years at Dear Old State

Wonder what happened to that guy that was coaching Penn State that day? Probably didn't last too much longer after losing to a team that had to come all the way across the country.

No gates bacl then - just had a couple of the football interns loosen the ropes to lower the drawbridge across the moat.

Cokes were 5 cents, and you could get 1 cent back by returning your bottle. Hot Dogs were 2 cents and you could get 1 cent back by returning the bun. Women were encouraged to wear dresses and stockings to the game. Men were encouraged not to, but most did anyway.
Smoking was mandatory, and stadium ushers offered unfiltered Camel cigarettes to all fans, espicially the younger ones.

It was a simpler, happier time.

UCLA is flying into State College airport from LAX traveling in two 737 aircraft. I guess they figure that's a better option than one large aircraft flying into Harrisburg. PSU will be flying out of Harrisburg next week for the USC game.

Is my 76 year old brain addled from playing high school football with a leather helmet or on October 7, 1967, did UCLA defeat Penn State 17-15 using illegal communication to their advantage. During the first half, UCLA quarterback, Gary Beban, who had an earphone in his helmet, would rollout, and a UCLA spotter in the press box would tell him to pass or run. .At halftime a police officer picked up the signal. The signal was jammed for the second half.

I have heard that for years. That Gary Beban had a receiver in his helmet. I thought UCLA used this devise to signal in the plays not to advise Gary to run or pass. I did not know the part about a police officer picking up the signal and someone jamming it during the second half. Is this legal now. I thought the communications link had to be shut off during the play.

Here's 1968.

PSU would never have scored that first TD if it was a BIG crew officiating. They would’ve had him down at the 3 yard line at least. Maybe even called him out of bounds earlier in the run (he wasn’t).

I remember that game too well - the final outcome was a back-breaker.
I was supposed to be in school, but PSU would not allow me on campus. Coat and tie, crutches and cast from hip to ankle after knee surgery from summer football. 6 weeks of cast after the Doc's said I messed things up, and no real rehab after - and I did the same thing the next year, 8 weeks of cast after surgery this time- missed both fall terms. Now the knee hurts full time, other body parts hurt just from getting older - oh well.....

It was written that Ed Sarson, the parking lot traffic coordinator, heard the UCLA chatter on his two-way radio.

There wasn’t a specific rule that banned speakers in helmets in 1965. After that season, the NCAA implemented the rule.

There wasn’t a specific rule that banned speakers in helmets in 1965. After that season, the NCAA implemented the rule.

This is True. My father worked in the athletic department at that time and knew one of the guys in the parking lot that overheard the broadcasting.
