What does a team "built around Tyler Ulis" look like in your opinion? I'm excited about the prospects of this, I think Tyler Ulis will be the heart a soul of Kentucky basketball for the next couple of years. His mentality and effort on D will be infectious.

if we get Newman it'll be fantastic

Newman can take it to the rim or pull up and shoot

Ulis will find him and it'll be a highlight reel every game.............

and if we add Zimmerman down low also............

Cal texted Ulis: "I'm going to build a team. Get your guys and let's do this again."

It will be fun no doubt. Hopefully he will reach out to some of the elite undeclared players in next year's class to join him. Would love to see Newman and Brown join HIS team.

Tyler is a tuff little floor general. It will be his team next year. He will make sure they all are prepared for the battle.

Just said in another thread, I love the kid, and he's a true point, and has real heart. But certain teams can easily exploit him on defense.....That's why he didn't play much in the second half Saturday......

It's the best news we fans can get out of this horrible finish to the season. I love Ulis's game. He's a bulldog on defense and can hit the 3 at a very high %. What he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in heart. With Ulis as our point guard of the future, i'm pretty sure the elite talents will not be saying no to Cal. If you're one of the top players in the nation, who would you rather have getting you the ball? This kid's height is the best part of his game. If he were 6'1, he too would be entering the nba draft. Since he's 5'9, we will probably get to keep this kid until at least his junior year.

Charles Mattews and Ulis have chemistry with each other too. Played AAU together. I am excited to see Briscoe with this combo. Booker is probably gone. If we add, Newman I would love to run that spread the floor offense with that 4 plus 1 big. GBB

I don't want Newman, even if we lose Booker. Newman seems too much like a player first guy.
But I'm really hoping that Booker returns.

I don't think there are any other guards available after Newman though.

But what big wouldn't want to play with Ulis.

Worst case, a backcourt of Ulis, Briscoe, Matthews & Hawkins would be good.

I think Cal saw his fire and his leadership skills and sees something rare and impressive. He's willing to go all in a stake his legacy on Tyler Ulis. What does that mean for team construction? Let's think out loud.

1. Tyler is the undisputed leader and alpha dog. You listen to what Ulis says because he will be an extension of Cal. Have your ego all you want, but not with Ulis.

2. Ulis' worst attribute is his height. He can be abused by larger players. He can be switched on screens to create a mismatch. He will need lengthy, active defenders around him. One Liggins type and one rim protector type should do it.

3. He needs shot makers. But don't we all?

4. Speed. Tyler wants to play fast, and he needs fast players around him who can finish in transition.

5. He needs a big who will pass it back out.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want arguably the best player in the class. If the kid plays selfish basketball, Cal will fix that right away.If he were truely about ME, i just can't see him being too interested in Kentucky. I'm sure he's watched this Kentucky team play this season. He has to know that won't happen at Kentucky. I know some worry about Ulis and his height. Yeah, some teams will take advantage of that and go at him, but he brings too much good to worry about his one flaw. Put a few shot blockers in the post and that problem goes away.Your worst case, i'm not sure that set of guards score enough points to go with. Matthews will be an awesome defender, but i don't see him coming in and scoring a lot of points. Briscoe has been known as a scoring point guard, but has changed his game to get others involved. I'm not sure we would want him to get back in that scoring before passing mindset. Newman would add that guard that can score the heck out of the basketball. We need him.

With Poythress and Skai, i don't think rebounding will be too much of a problem. Not to sound like i'm bashing, but look at this year's team. All the size in the world and still got out rebounded a ton by smaller teams. I love Briscoe's game, but for our sake and his, i hope he's not asked to be our starting shooting guard.

Newman is a hell of a player for sure. I do wonder if he can get past "getting his" to fit in with the team concept. I would love to add jaylen Brown.

Another thing to note. If Cal is truly building the team around Ulis he should really look into having a zone defense in the scheme. It could "mask" as oppose to "hide' any match-up issues. Its unlikely he will do it but it should be considered.

twins should have left last year when their draft stock was higher. their alternate strategy would be stay another two years and try to become more seasons as seniors, but i doubt that will happen. this is ulis's team now. i foresee next year as being a repeat of 2011. let's go get another final four!

I think that's the key phrase. Something different. I think Calipari has reached the stage where he's like a kid with a chemistry set.

chieck diallo. I want him in a bad way. As athletic as Lee but with a way better offensive game. If we lose WCS, KAT and Dakari, we're gonna have to add probably 2 post players (in addition to Skal) in this class. Diallo and Zimmerman would be fine with me.

This is really dumb. Let's go through the various reasons why this comment is just really, really stupid.

- You have another All-American PG who led your team to the national title the previous year in the game.

- Ulis is a freshman. When you have the luxury stated above, why throw the pressure on the freshman

- "If Ulis was that good" would bring his skill into question. According to every statistic, he was one of the elite point guards in college basketball and was only a freshman. Incredibly high assist/turnover ratio, very high 3 point percentage and overall FG%, outstanding ball handler, top 3 PG coming out of high school, outplayed the #2 PG in the class handily when they last played, crafty passer, great dribble penetration. The only mentionable negative for the kid is that he's 5'9. Had he been 6'3, 6'4, he may very well be the best pure point guard prospect coming out of high school in quite some time.

Or we could just go with one other very simple reason..

- Just wasn't the kind of game he needed to be in late.

Even Anthony Davis has unfavorable match-ups, and he may very well be the most well rounded basketball player on the planet today. Any way you want to look at it though, his skill as a basketball player is incredible, although his physical presence lags behind that, it's still sufficient enough to build an elite college basketball team around. The kind of team with an elite offense, and considering Skal Labissiere is coming in, and we're keeping Alex Poythress, Marcus Lee, and potentially Dakari Johnson, we'll get a good number of blocked shots.

Love Ulis, but we are always going to have a big problem with him and that's on the defensive end. He's way to small to defend big guards, and since Cal switches everything, he's very vulnerable to what happened to Booker on Saturday.

Clearly seems to me that next year's team won't switch on everything next season then. Gonna have to run another defense. Despite being an outstanding defensive team with an elite perimeter defense, he was the best perimeter defender on the team and as young and small as there was on the team.

There were times this season that we should have changed up our defense to prevent mismatches.

Ulis will struggle if Cal tries to switch on every screen going forward.

He just can't guard ANYONE in the post and should never be put in that position.

I agree! Diallo really impressed me with his athleticism and game . . . he really shot up my list of hopefuls, I say to number one. Tired of being out rebounded in tough games, this kid will go get the ball. Zimmerman is so slim, but his game is good. We could really use his offensive game, he just has to toughen up and help out on the boards.

I get the defensive worry with Ulis, but thats a simple fix. Cut down on the switches. His ball-pressure is elite, he'll do fine on the perimeter.

The weird thing is, Wisconsin didn't even target him on defense. They went after Booker, not even caring he's 6'6 because of his lack of strength.

Ulis really only has 1 flaw, and thats him being allergic to the paint. He simply doest even attempt to go in there because of his size. He ends up becoming easier to contain. I hope he finds creative ways to go in there and be able to finish at an average rate. It'll open up more chances for his teammates.

That is so untrue of Ulis.
