Is this news combined with the news coming out of Florida lately enough to convince people that Derp McStuffin was just a lazy recruiter?

I like where Moorhead has this team headed. Improvements in the offensive side this coming season is just what the doctor ordered.

1 was a re-commit but sounds like a great job by the staff to get the re-commit.

May be a little harsh to say Dan was lazy, but the current staff seems relentless.

His poor track record recruiting a couple of key positions while he was here is ridiculous.

Mullen wasn’t lazy. He was picky to a fault and had his staff using different criteria for recruiting than we as fans realized. He simply valued leadership as much or more than raw talent. It caused him to devalue some kids. But it also gave him the inside track on some others that weren’t on the big guy’s radar.

I don’t disagree that he mismanaged the roster, but he can recruit. He made MSU a consistent top 24, 8 win team. His recruits took MSU to #1, and had them in a chance to play in some big time bowls if it weren’t for his late November job searches. He is a good evaluator of talent, and he did a good job of getting those kids to school

I didn't say he couldn't evaluate talent. He was successful here. But you'd think he could have reeled in a few bigger fish? Especially in those last couple years. He just couldn't seal the deal. He can't do it at the level Florida fans expect. Are y'all telling me there weren't more 4 and 5 star kids with great leadership skills? I certainly don't believe that. He did find good kids and developed them. He was very successful at all the other coaching stuff.

Maybe lazy was too strong a word. It is pretty loaded. How about passive?

He did find good kids and developed them, I'm just trying to figure out why he can't seem to hold on to these commitments at Florida. He lost many commitments here that we should have been able to hold on to. When they signed elsewhere from State I thought "we are mstate" but now I'm not wondering if Dan has some recruiting weakness that he keeps loosing recruits to GA.

This is the best explanation I’ve seen. It helps draw attention to why so many of his guys are playing at next level. And most aren’t just filling a roster spot, they are excelling. It’s an interesting approach for an Urban disciple.

The “Mullen is a lazy recruiter” narrative is, in fact, lazy.

I think holding onto a “commitment” has a tenuous definition. Some say they are committed that are only doing so for the attention and cash prizes. Some to force the hand of another school. Some to “guarantee a spot” and then some because it’s the decision they’ve made. We as fans are pretty blind to the actual reasons. Even the fans that give money.

Think about the dude who gave Leo the 15 large. I’m sure he was confident it worked until it didn’t and that was the kid playing him.

Commitments are a simple figment of our imagination. Offers and letters of intent are the only real evidence that it’s going well before the kid shows up.

He didn't have different criteria. He recruited the same 4 and 5 stars that everyone else did. He simply didn't land them most of the time and then had to sign a bunch of backup plans. He was very good at being able to spot guys that had untapped potential that were lightly recruited and turn them into good SEC players, but it was not because he had a different set of criteria than other schools. It was because he couldn't land the big fish most of the time. He's signing the blue chips at Florida because of the logo. He's not using a different criteria there. He's doing what every other coach does. Go after the big fish.

True. He (and, moreso, some of his assistants) also had hardass prickly personalities that made things a lot more difficult on them than it needed to be. He definitely didn’t have the “player’s coach” mentality. But, no one that has had the success he has been a part of could ever be described as lazy in any aspect.

This is it. He would just quit on the big fish. He wasn't lazy, he just wouldn't do it.

That being said, that type of temperament suits him, but is going to limit him wherever he goes. He is a micro-manager, which leads to him having to do everything (which takes up all his time). This management leads to him having a bunch of 'bitches' who do task-oriented things for him, i.e. the Country Club, and he stays fiercely loyal to them to his detriment.

So no, he's not lazy. He just works too hard on the wrong stuff.

What I believe is fact. We had 4 stars decommitting all the time and they were replaced by 3 stars with no offers many times. Are you trying to tell us that he was pulling the 4 stars’ offers and that is why they all decommitted or never committed to start with? Do you really think that the bottom of our classes would have still gotten offers if people like Pat Patterson, Snoop Brassell, Carlos Thompson, Vincent Sanders, Carlton Martin, CJ Johnson, Donte Moncrief, Tobias Singleton, Channing Ward, Isaac Gross, Tony Conner, Kailo Moore, Rod Taylor, Markel Pack, CJ Hampton, Tee Sheppard, Breland Speaks, Javon Patterson, Benito Jones, AJ Brown, Scott Lashley, Nigel Knott, etc, etc, etc wanted to be in our class? Go look at recruiting articles. He was on the highly rated guys and then he went to backup plans a large % of times. There were some in every class that he offered early that were diamonds in the rough but a lot of times we were scrambling at signing day to sign a Ronald Cochran type guy. Your opinion is not based on reality.

Look. I get it. You are confident beyond description of how you believe Mullen did it based on this decommitment or what offer was pulled or what a recruiting article said.

I dont have to read recruiting articles. I'm telling you how his staff was told to evaluate and how that affected some of who was chosen. I dont need you to think my statement was based in reality. You choose not to believe it. Good for you.

Cool story. He’s about to land his second straight top 10 class at Florida because it’s easy to recruit there and he doesn’t have to offer diamonds that no one knows for the most part. I guess his super duper secret evaluation system just happens to line up with all the recruiting rankings top prospects these days. Have a good day

Wasn't there an SEC recruit in the fairly recent past who was committed and never actually received an offer letter on NSD?

He was also totally and almost antagonistically against any croot receiving "benefits" while he was here. He wouldn't dare sully his good name, because we were always going to be a stepping stone for him. Florida (or Notre Dame, etc.) would never have hired him if he had a black mark.

But now, he has reached his promised land, and he has adjusted his old way of thinking, so I hear.
