"According to a disclosure from federal prosecutors, former NC State assistant Orlando Early's attorney said his client disclosed that Gottfried on two occasions gave him envelopes -- contained with what Early believed was cash -- to deliver to star guard Dennis Smith Jr.'s trainer to ensure he signed with the Wolfpack in 2015.

Smith Jr.'s trainer, Shawn Farmer, was supposed to deliver the envelopes to Dennis Smith Sr., the father of the five-star recruit, who is now a point guard with the New York Knicks.

According to sources, the allegations concerning Gottfried were included in a sentencing memorandum filed Feb. 12 on behalf of former Adidas executive James Gatto, who was sentenced to nine months in federal prison on Tuesday."

"Early believes the number was in the ballpark of $100,000 or more," the disclosure said.

"Thereafter, on two occasions, Gottfried handed Early envelopes, which Early understood to contain cash," the disclosure continues. "Early in turn delivered the envelopes to Farmer for subsequent delivery to Dennis Smith Sr., the father of Smith Jr."

At some point, according to the disclosure, Gottfried "complained to Early about having to provide money out of his own pocket to the Smith family," and "stated, in substance, that he intended to ask Adidas for help."

Is it really shocking or is that sarcasm? Gottfried always was able to sign big name recruits but he never did anything with them. I always thought he was dirty. I mean, seriously, he always did less with more, so I always thought, "Why would any big time players want to play for him?" And yet they kept signing year after year. He did it at Alabama. He did it at NC State, too.

It's the same question I've been asking about Will Wade. Top recruits with great potential who don't stay home are looking for a program with a track record of preparing guys for the next level or they may choose a school with a family tie or a coach they know and trust. So, they choose a coach or school they trust. Or they stay close to home. I can understand any of these decisions. But the thing I don't get is when a guy chooses a coach and program halfway across the country that is either proven to underperform in developing players and/or winning or is unproven altogether. It makes no sense.

When I see a guy choose a particular school just out of the blue, I always have to raise an eyebrow. You take Brian Bowen, for example. Now, I know Pitino has a decent track record of developing players, but why would a top recruit go there with sanctions in place and more coming? Rick said it was the biggest surprise he's ever had in recruiting. But that doesn't happen, and red flags should have been flying.

Take guys like Naz Reid (from New Jersey) or Tremont Waters (from Connecticut). Why are they leaving the northeast, passing up so many other proven schools and coaches in between to go to LSU to play for an unproven coach? It just smells fishy. And, as it turns out, it was.

I’m truly sorry to be so anti-climactic, but it was meant as sarcasm..,

Those hoping Dook comes up implicated in all of this are going to be deeply disappointed. K is too shrewd to ever be directly involved. You will never hear of a wiretap with his voice on one end of the line or that he handed envelopes off to somebody. Nope, that's why Capel was there. And there was probably a few layers between the players/handlers and Capel. Gotta have plausible deniability just in case. Dook is as dirty as they come but, they've also had plenty of time and practice in perfecting their skullduggery.

Heck, the NCAA wouldn’t look at them anyway. Coach K is the face of USA basketball.

Just more evidence on why Calipari hasn’t literally been crushing it every year with the top 5 players from each class. Got to admit, though, he has still done pretty damned good for not having paid kids to come to UK, given the rampant cheating going on everywhere to try and compete with him.

And let’s admit it, these coaches have resolved to cheating for one simple reason - the Coach John Calipari and Kentucky marriage.

If Duke is implicated it will most likely come from the Kansas side of things with Zion. If they get hammered maybe they squeal. Probably not but maybe.
