Trick Plays Rarely Work

Braun and company need to stop calling this stupid "trick" play. It never has worked and probably never will. Yet, the coaches continue to call it.

I'm taking the liberty to quote Lou in his post below on describing it today.

"The Wildcats had a first down at the Purdue 13, when they tried to get a little too cute. They brought in Himon as quarterback and snapped the ball to him twice for six yards rushing. Then, they inexplicably brought in backup Ryan Boe on third-and-4, and he was stuffed for no gain, leaving the Wildcats to settle for a 27-yard Jack Olsen field goal."

Yep that was just one of the handful of poor playcalling decisions. We’re rolling and then the put Boe in cold, taking it out of the hands of Stone and Komolafe.

Gadget play is probably more accurate. The Wildcat plays are not bad because although they know you’re running, the RB gets the ball a beat sooner and there is technically an extra blocker. The Boe play just didn’t give us any advantage at all and just put pressure on him in a 3rd and medium to get the first down with his feet?

And we may well get that. And who knows - maybe one of our young guys takes a step forward in the spring, etc. We shall see.

Trick play worked to help Louisville upset Miami. Fake field goal turned into a TD. The fake punt trick play should have been called off because Purdue had a guy right there. Can't they call an audible on that?

There is a time and place for trick plays, It is just that their selection of time and place to run them is questionable. For example the fake punt, It it had been 4th and two, maybe but 4th and 10 from that spot on the field?

Those aren’t even trick plays, just wrinkles. I don’t mind trying to wildcat, it’s just a way to try and get a +1 and challenge eye discipline. They didn’t work great but are low risk were fine.

I don’t need to see Boe again. Another way to just try to generate a +1 in the read option game, but he didn’t even run the play well, so what’s the point? Maybe in the middle of the field on 2nd and 4, not in the red zone when the offense is rolling and stone has been great on third down.

Some of that is philosophical. Like, I felt the same way about the Zeke fake XP in the Outback Bowl back in the day. I have no issue going for two but Kafka was absolutely cooking, why not put the ball in the hands of your guy one last time and let him have the last word, succeed or fail? I’m a ride the horse who brung ya guy.
