He’s already committed to a program in our league that beat us; so my initial take is he can play here. He’d be the type to stick around 3-4 years too so it’s not that we need him to be a star year 1

I would love to get Noah. Bring in Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson next year, add Mash, Jr. and Blackmon, that would be a fun team to root for.

Great thing about Pope is I now have a coach who knows much more about basketball than I do .

I don’t think cal could have coached a good high school team. He just recruited incredible talent and rolled the basketball out for them to play .
His out of bounds PLAY was bizarre . Just throw the ball high to one of your taller forwards . Have him push off to get the ball.
I coukd go on and on but I will never second guess coach Pope .

In today’s environment where players are openly encouraged to transfer at will, I think if he asked to be released bc his childhood dream school opened up due to a coaching change that he’d get approved. USC doesn’t want to force someone to be there nor do they want any negative press of holding players hostage and keeping them from their dreams.

10-20 years ago there’s no shot. These days it’s “if coaches can leave whenever they want then players should too” mentality

NIL - Name, Image, and Likeness

The letter of intent is tricky to navigate because it's intended to be a sort of binding contract.

For us to go where we want to go. We need to aim higher then this. We need the best of the best! Just because cal got the best and failed doesn't mean that we change. Pope better go get the best talent out there!

If he wanted out, I'd be shocked if USC didn't grant him his request. No school will want or should want to hold a kid against their will. Would be a bad look and definitely would be used against them on the recruiting trail.

That said, I wouldn't expect him to ask out of his commitment.

Yes because the coach he signed to play for is no longer the coach. Nothing has changed at SC. Can’t let every kid out of their NLI because SW Missouri community college hired a new coach that they might’ve wanted to play for.

You literally can, if the kid asks out, the school will grant it. It's 2024, not 2004.

I’m not arguing that a player can’t ask out and be granted a release. I’m just saying the loop hole people are referring to is if a kid signs a LOI at a school and then THAT schools coach leaves they are released from their LOI. Cal leaving KY has nothing to do with that.

Only think that works for signed guys when there is a coaching change, SC hasn't had a coaching change, so he would have to ask out of his LOI and that's unlikely.

Maybe we get him in the Portal in a year or two.

But not at the school he committed to. That's not how this works. Even in the age of the Portal they have to have some kind of safeguards to protect rosters. It doesn't need to be any more of a free for all than it already is.
