After last season ended I suggested Rhule promote Uncle Donnie to Associate Head Coach or some other meaningless mascot position

That way we can hire an actual coach while still kowtowing to everyone’s feelings, which we all know are Very Important when building a contending football program
He can carpool with Foley on their way into their analyst roles.

There is a lack of talent on our OL. Those guys got beat up by better players. Especially those OTs.

I think part of the problem we have is that we don't have the defensive line talent like Michigan so they don't even realize it's a weakness until they see it in game. Our defense can't prepare them for what they seen yesterday. Again Especially the tackles.

There's some truth in that. The coaches may have been a little too optimistic about our line's ability to block those guys. And Dylan definitely held onto the ball too long a couple times. But Michigan is the best defensive line we'll see all season. IF, and this is a big if, the line gels and the coaches make a good adjustment or two, it's not likely that we'll get dominated like that in pass pro again.

I think sometimes we underestimate the impact of game plans and play calling. Mediation clearly has some play calls that hit for explosive plays against our defensive calls. My Vikings looked AWFUL last week. With half their starting O line out this week they looked almost unstoppable with Wentz at QB. Granted they were playing the Bengals but a week after getting trounced, their O and D lines looked tremendous.
Things do vary from week to week. How in the hell did our line do so admirably against the Ohio State bunch last year?

Anymore, I just have so little respect for any fan who overreacts so badly to one loss. We've got a half dozen guys on here who I think would rather see the team lose just so their doom and gloom **** comes true.

Rhule said in his post game presser that he thought the offensive line “gave Michigan too much credit” (I assume he meant thinking Michigan’s defensive line is better than it is) and therefore our guys did not “attack” with physicality. They instead played tentatively and defensively. All of which is just coach speak for “our line played scared”. So I think that was Rhule taking a shot at Donnie. I really do. Because if our guys do have the physical talent to compete with the likes of Michigan, but failed out of fear and being intimidated, then that is a coaching issue.
Maybe. But there are a lot of times in sports where a coach stresses all of the right things and certain players play nervous, scared, and tentative anyway. It's hard to say. I've heard Donnie preaches an aggressive, strike first approach so this is probably an example of players not following the plan.

I fall into the “I’ll believe it when I see it” in regards to the take that it’s not likely we’ll get dominated like that again.

It isn’t just the one single loss to Michigan that’s very frustrating….it was the 29th straight loss to a ranked opponent. And that fact is plastered on social media and is mocked by other fan bases. The single rock that is the Michigan game was put on top of the other 28 rocks and the mountain that has been formed looms very large.
When are we going to do better? When do we climb that mountain? That is what bothers fans.

I didn't make any promises but I think the only way we get dominated anything like that again is if we fall behind to a team like Penn State and become one dimensional.

Against Michigan, the line produced some holes in the run game but their safeties were just playing flying to the football and making tackles against the run. And their linemen were coming off blocks. Big holes were closing quickly.

Which has exactly to do with what I posted?

So if we looked terrible against Michigan this week, but next week we played Akron again with half the OL missing we could look unstoppable? Profound.
The point was that at least for our defensive line, Michigan hit on several explosive plays that weren’t necessarily due to a lack of our talent. They hit a long QB draw against a DL stunt. Our defensive call led to that. It was the perfect play call. That isn’t going to happen every week. I don’t disagree that they won in the trenches. I do disagree that it’s all a lack of talent. Some of it was game plan and coaching.

Maybe Uncle Donnie will realize that his failings are hurting his nephew's career (and little Raiola when he gets here) and do the honorable thing by stepping aside. One can hope.

The o-line was pitiful especially the tackles. There was more than one occasion our tackles were put on their backs by the MIchigan d-ends. I don't understand why we can't just spend 20 million on a competent line? We also need to fire Donnie I've seen enough of his piss poor coaching to last a lifetime.

Rhule doesn’t fire coaches, so let’s hope Donnie gets promoted to recruiting deputy coordinator director. And then Donnie is still “in the program” and satisfies all of you afraid of making Dylan sad instead of caring about what’s best for Dylan. Then we can go hire a legit OL coach and give Dylan what he needs.

Penn St. may be even better on defense but I think most of us had that chalked up as an L already. But agree with u on everything else.

Exactly. This might seem strange to say given how many sacks we gave up in passing situations, but the number one thing we have to improve upon is our run blocking. An offense like ours, without a mobile dual threat QB who is a pure pocket passer, simply must have a complementary ground game to make play action passes more effective and to slow down the pass rush. Right now, teams know they do not have to commit safeties and corners to shore up the rush defense and that they can stop our run game with their front six or seven. People complain that our receivers have trouble getting open. Well, that is why. Teams can drop five into coverage and focus on covering without fear of needing to keep one eye on the running game.

Part of the problem too is that our running backs are very, very average. Sometimes there ARE holes there that a runner like Abdullah or Burkhead or Helu could exploit, but our guys take piss poor running angles. A better running back can also bounce things to the outside if the middle is clogged. EJ can do that but it looks like he has been coached not to.

Big mobile DL are hard to find. Not having one that required a double team made life horrible for the LBs. Michigan also used their HBack really effectively both at the point of attack, and to reposition a LB and create cutback lanes.

Our OL has sucked for the last 25 years—period. The couple seasons some point to for OL success were when our OL was barely average—that seemed like big improvement.

I still have hope for Gottula on the left. I can’t even remember an effective RT. Who was the last one?

We have a LONG season to go... Help is needed... any chance Dad jumps in and helps Unc on getting them fellas tuned up front? Rhule says there's an open door policy to any Nebraska player that wants to come in... I seem to remember him saying he's open to their help... so... Jr's future depends on a line... will Dad jump in? or has he already and this is still the result???
