Where has the hate come from for Travis Ford? I’m out of the loop on this one.
There are 2 former Cats that are almost universally regarded as jerks - Ford and Massiello. I don’t recall hearing anyone that knew either of them making a defense. There are probably other former players that are disliked to one degree or another. But these two take the cake...

I will say this, Ed Davender was one of my favorite players as a kid, but due to some ******** that went down between and I personally, I would rather spend a fishing trip with Ford or Massiello. But yeah, both of those two are jerks for sure.

I got on a plane last Christmas time in Atlanta headed to Lexington and Travis Ford sat down right beside me in one of those tiny commuter planes where our knees are touching. I recognized him and tried to spark a conversation, he was having none of it. One sentence answers to any questions. Conversation died. I've run into Steve Spurier at the Atlanta Airport and he was a heck of a lot nicer. I've also set next to Tubby on a plane and he was nice.

On the flip side, I’ve interacted a half dozen times or so with Jack Givens. Every single time he’s a nice as a human being can be. Sometimes your childhood heroes are not all that nice, Jack is definitely an exception.

I’ll totally agree on this. Givens exudes class like its flooding out of his pores. A gentleman’s gentleman.

You put it better than I did. Jack Givens is a great dude. I love that guy.

I’ve met a few UK players over the years. Most of them from the Pitino days, Ford was one of the first ones I met. Didn’t realize it at the time but he was just as much of a jerk then as he is now. It was at one of those state tour exhibition things they used to do. He and like Farmer and a few others came o the local high school and did some drills and some three on three. I got his and the rests autographs; even then he seemed too busy or important to sign.

Sad too. He’s still one of my favorite players. Just can’t understand how if you are a legacy Wildcat (i.e. born in state and watched UK growing up) how you wouldn’t be appreciative of Kentucky children coming up to you saying how much they like you and want your autograph. Just don’t get it. I would be extremely humbled and almost embarrassed by the attention. Dude is just a arrogant jerk.

Met Jamal Mashhurn during that time frame too. He was a delight. Smiling, laughing, loved fans and messing with UK kid fans. Awesome dude.

That is crazy for them to be mean like that I sat next to Mark Cuban, Papa John and Gene Simmons, they wouldn't shut up the entire flight, I bet they thought I was stuck up

Cuban is funny. I was lucky to get to talk with him and who I guess were some of his “people”’one time in San Antonio. They were hilarious. It was like I was in college with a bunch of dudes getting ready to go out to hit some house parties.

He seemed like a loose Canon.

Talking nice - I go with Mel Turpin and Sam Bowie. Those two guys are (or were, in Mel’s case) class acts. Two of the nicest, most down to earth guys for sure.

I know Sam is great. I never had the chance to meet Mel.

I met Wayne Turner at an Alumni Party 10-12 years ago. He’s simply a very nice, classy, and respectful person.

Yes - Wayne is a nice guy; or at least has good manners and is happy to talk to fans. I showed him a picture once that I had of the team; he loved it, I guess hed never seen it. He offered me $50 for it. I was going to have him sign it, but I gave it to him. Figured it was the least I could do. Free of charge by the way.....

Ed has been dead for 2 1/2 years.

Yes, I knew this. Wasn’t intending to be insensitive. Sorry if I offended anyone, truly. Like I said, he was one of my favorite players growing up - I used to write his last name on the back of my white t-shirts when I played in my yard.

I didn’t think it was insensitive. I did think that you would get a better story out of going on a fishing trip with a ghost.

During the 1977-1978 NCAA title year, my dad was driving on the street on the side of Rupp Arena as we were going to park for the game. Goose was walking to the entrance I guess the players went in at that time. Being 12 years old, he was a hero of mine. I waved at Goose and he smiled and waved back. He had no idea what that meant to me at that time.
