I wouldnt necessarily say travesty but I understand why Gard was selected. Its more disappointment that RU doesnt seem to get enough attention across the country for their turnaround season

Can see why itd go either way would of loved Pike to win but have 0 problem with Gard. They looked left for dead mid season.

I get why they went with Gard, but disappointed it wasn't Pikiell.

Somehow Gard managed to take a 6-6 team and finish 8-0 to claim a share of the conference title, after losing a 28.5 min/g, 10 ppg starter to transfer 19 games into the year.

In a way it's actually a sign of respect that Pike didn't get coach of the year for finishing in 8th place. Let's hope we beat the coach of the year on Friday...

There’s a case for both coaches. This does not bother me. He did a fantastic job this year as did Coach.

I couldn't argue with any one of the three - Pike, Underwood or Gard - winning it. I will say, it would have been nice to have our coach take that award on the recruiting trail with him.

Win two game and get to the sweet 16...with 165 out of 200 minute returning...we would likely be ranked pre-season number 15 next year and won’t be able to keep the media ...

He also got Potter around the same time which helped to ease the blow. However, although Pike did a great job, I agree with the choice. Wisconsin finished with 3 more wins than us in conference and I felt we were better than them when we beat them in December.

Yeah, its not like he lost his senior captain, team leader scoring and rebounder last min. Going into the season or his star pg. Mid season to thumb injury .

I voted for Brad. But both he and pike needed a tradegy to make the story media better.
Kind a shocked they didn't go Iowa to make it a clean sweep on the major awards.

Not really similar situations losing a starter after 19 games vs. 5 months before the start of the season, and reaching the NCAA tournament vs. claiming a share of the regular season title.

Like I said, I'm disappointed, but I get it.

I thought Pike was a slightly better choice, but hard to argue with Gard...

Im just being objective and not wearing the scarlet glasses here so dont jump down my throat but Pike was probably 4th behind Gard, Underwood and Chambers. Yes PSU kindve fell apart at the end of the year but he got them into the top 10 and outside of NW the last game he didnt have a single bad loss.

heck I could really make a case for Juwan Howard, fran mccaffrey and tom izzo too.

Howard I thought hed be your typical nba—> flop as a coach, he surprised me.

mccaffrey loses one of his best players to transfer, one of his leading scorers to a hip injury and another guy declares early. All he does is develop arguably the national player of the year and has iowa right in the thick of things.

tom izzo ties for 1st place in the conference after losing his most talented player right before the season to injury, his teams emotional leader has his brother kill himself at the beginning of the season and again, he just produces once again.

dont live in a vacuum, step away and look at things through a different lense.

I know it is different but there are plenty of factors that are unique to the other coaches too. Like it was a 3 way tie....not outright . how well did they overperform their pre season pick? What's the recent history for. The program ....etc.

I'm just tired of the same ol same ol club. Hearing Freakin Izzo in the mix. Really? Talk about UNDER performing.

It was time for the league to embrace one of the new coaches or coaches who historically where at the bottom. Its good for the league. Anyone but Wisky, Iowa, and MSU would gave been fine by me. Didn't need to be pike. The cost to enter this club goes way past the financial dues.
Rant over.

Izzo should not even be mentioned for Big 10 coach of year nor national coach..its absurd..yes I know they had some off the court issues with the death of Winstons brother and the loss of Langford but come on. The late season dip for RU really hurt Pike, meanwhile Chambers had his own late season swoon.

overall Gard and Pike were at the top. Remember Chambers had an experienced team and Underwood at Illinois has a lot of talent.

I’ve always thought that the argument that a “team has talent so the coach can’t be COY” is kinda silly. The most important part of being a college coach is recruiting talent to your program. To penalize a coach because they did a good job acquiring talent (aka doing their job) has always seemed counter intuitive to me.

I don’t think he was 4th. 2nd yes. If we don’t have that losing streak he probably wins it.

Gard's assistant, Howard Moore, lost his wife and young daughter in a car accident in the off-season... Kobe King, arguably the team's most talented player, left the team midway through the year... strength and conditioning coach Erik Helland resigned after being placed on leave for using a racial epithet in front of Badgers players as he recounted a story from his days in the NBA... had a 13-10 record, won eight straight to capture a part of the B1G title.

I don't think there was any doubt Gard would be voted COY.

bac- spot on comments .One season doesn't change some voters perception. What matters is that Rutgers name is announced on Selection Sunday which will make Pikiell and fans very happy.

I think it’s a way bigger slight that nobody was named to the defensive team. I get that RU plays good team defense and nobody averaged the 34+ minutes that Oturu did, but all I can say is a) winning generally matters with these awards (that’s the logic on Gard, right?) and b) usually the award goes to someone on a team that’s collectively good at defense. Minnesota isn’t even in the top 40.

Again, RU is 6th nationally in defense. No other BIG team is even in the top 10.
