Traveling: Non Calls?

Having watched quite a few womens games over the last few years, for obvious reasons.

Is it just me, or are there a ton of traveling calls that are not called? Just looks like alot of post moves with changing their pivot foot. The Euro Steps seem like they are taking about 3 steps to me. Also, on some 3 point shot attempts, its like they take a 2 step up and down, without shooting, to get enough momentum then going forward to shoot.

I'd love to hear opinions from those in the better know than I am! There are quite a few ex coaches, players, and maybe even a few refs here in our crowd

I think there are a lot of "missed" traveling calls on pro, college men an womens now compared to ten years ago. Seems to me its almost three at times when players are "on the run" for a dunk or driving in the lane in traffic.

They'll let players run all over the lane, then they'll call traveling on somebody 40 feet from the basket when, maybe, they drag their pivot foot an eighth of an inch.

The lack of consistency in enforcing the rules is incredible. A foul is one thing on one end of the court and the opposite on the other end. That's why kids should play the piano or the guitar, or maybe golf. At least then how you do is almost entirely up to you. There are no umpires or refs to screw things up.

I feel the bobble is a bail out for officials if they are not sure what to call. I also believe officiating evolves to how it is called at the highest level. Years ago when Ginobili was making a pretty good living at the NBA level using the euro step we saw a big change in the game. Our men’s college coach purchased a John Calipari dvd on offense and teaching the euro step. Our coach put it in with his team and consistently got called for about 6 to 10 travels a game. After about 10 technicals later trying to convince the officials it was legal he gave up and quit teaching it. The following year all teams were using the move and the same officials let it go as a legal move. My point— it ain’t the game us old timers used to play and it’s not going back.

This happens in the Pros at times as well. Another thing that happens is that some teams can play physical, but when the other plays physical, they get whistled.

what i don't understand is how if you now bobble the ball it's not a travel. It's one thing if it's tipped by a defender but they are now allowing it when the player themselves lose control. That's what the rule is for.
I'd like to see someone take full advantage of this by juggling the ball the length of the court. Cat bat the ball between your hands for a full court dribble free layup.

Same as you. To me it looks like there is an uncalled travel every three possessions or so.

Angel Reese is a wizard at the travel/double dribble. In this clip she puts it all together in a game at ful[ speed.

The worst is the wnba. But I understand that it is hard not to when you are looking over your shoulder to make sure you don’t get wacked. Ha ha

What about the jump stop? That's something you never used to see, but then it crept into the game, perhaps about the same time as the Euro step.

If a player can take a two-footed hop and be legal when he comes down, after the next jump - usually up towards the basket - I'd like to seem him land it under the same reasoning as the first hop ... and then proceed in this way all the way around the half-court. I'd giggle.

Something I see particularly in the women's game is a player taking several steps after catching a pass on the run and she needs to or wants to stop quickly.

For some reason it goes totally unnoticed, even by the commentators. Guess because they are so used to it.

Anyone remember when players didn't wear a mouthpiece?
Basketball has gone from a non-contact sport to full contact sport where hand checking, backing in "moving a player out of position to score" to fighting your way through a double team(traveling) for a layup. Refs don't know when to call a foul anymore.

I think that's legal. You just need to be sure the right refs are involved. 😉

For a travel to be called a player has to have control of the ball.
If the ball is being bobbled, that means they do not have control of the ball, which means the standard for a travel violation have not been met and therefore travel cannot and should not be called.
