I am thinking of getting a travel trailer. I need to be able to haul it behind a half ton truck. Looking to spend in the $20K range. Do you have any suggestions or things to look for. Thank you.

Word of caution: Craigslist is a damn hotbed of scammers when it comes to campers and travel trailers. Make sure the phone number provided is in your area code (or at least the area code for the craigslist ad; 601 if posted in the Jackson craigslist for example) and only communicate via email at first if possible. I've had 3 separate instances where it was 100% clear it was a scam with the first email response.

My parents have a Jayco that they keep in Starkville that we stay in for football season. Very well built. It's a bigger one but is easy to pull. They balance them really well so there's no excessive bumper weight. It's a bunkhouse style that sleeps "comfortably" 5 adults and 2 kids.

Getting into your business a little bit, but are you sure you want to buy one? I know several people who bought one so they could fulfill their dreams of traveling, only to realize after a couple of trips it's not all its cracked up to be. Then they sell at a big loss. Renting is a good option. I don't know where to recommend you look, but I know options are out there.

For craigslist, I always use a google voice account to do any communications. You can make calls or text. Its the easiest way i've found to keep you're real number away from strangers/scammers

We started with a travel trailer and now have a class A. We use it a ton for football/baseball and vacations.

Best place to start is local dealers and decide on a floorplan. Once you decide on that you can check RVtrader.com and RVT.com to get an idea on actual sale price. (Jayco was mentioned earlier and it is a good choice because they include a 2yr warranty on new purchase.)

(If you are already know what floorplan you like, and want to look for a nice used one, Camper Corral in Madison has a large selection of consignment trailers).

Shop around, compare pricing online and you can easily get one for $20K.

If you will not have sewer at your spot, black and gray water tank capacity is something to look at. More is better. The TT with corrugated metal exteriors are cheaper than flat fiberglass but they are damn near impossible to wax. The main bed needs to have access to both sides and not pushed up in a corner especially if the Mrs will be spending time in it. Bunkhouse models would work great for a camphouse and kids. Be sure and get a load leveling hitch, most new ones will come with it but it is a must for a half ton truck. An electric tongue jack is nice to have, it makes hookup a lot easier. Invest in an electric impact wrench to screw the 4 corner stabilizing jacks down, you will thank me later.

Yeah the leveling hitch is definitely necessary if you have a half ton. If you get one with an electric jack, be sure to have a bucket to cover it up when it's parked and if it's going to be out in the weather. Rain water will get in the top and rust up the gears.
