It can certainly get loud at Memorial Stadium when the opposition's offense is on the field but I've never heard it described as hostile.
It can be a difficult environment to play in for some teams but not for a team that calls The Big House home.

Back in the 90s glory days, there were several times when it was hostile, both malicious and just darn loud.
Malicious: 1990 "Sal is dead, Go Big Red." WTF. (That's really the only malicious one I can recall, can't remember other instances.)
Now I feel like people can point to trips to Penn State as fans being malicious, and I know people have posted stories here on it. Agree, Husker fans don't go that far.
Just darn loud: 1993 when Chad May complained to the referee about the crowd noise.
Lots of times I recall the fan noise in the stadium causing problems for opposing offenses, but that 1993 Kansas State game sticks out because of Chad May being a little baby.
I don't think we've had that kind of home field advantage simply from crowd noise since Solich was fired save for the prime Pelini years. Being good brings fan enthusiasm.
That being said, Michigan's stadium at least used to be called the quietest huge stadium in college football and the crowd didn't really have an impact. I haven't watched enough of their games since they've been great recently to know if the crowd has an impact on the game, but I bet the Michigan crowd does now more than when they weren't as good.
I haven't been in person, but always heard Michigan has a very horizontal stadium, which takes the crowd out and away from the field more than up and on top of it like most large stadiums. No clue if that's true though.
I was at the Michigan game in 2012 under the lights where we beat Dennard Robinson, it was loud, and hostile. Last time they came here and we should have won, it seemed very loud and hostile. Just because we aint throwing switchblades on the field doesnt mean its not hostile. When Miami and Oregon were here a few years ago, the stadium seemed different as well. Its a big time environment when the crowd wants it to be.
It’s not been hostile, or difficult .
When we were great I would describe Memorial Stadium as “ Intimidating”.
The Stadium was as a sea of red and you were facing a team with a reputation for beating you with big plays and physically wearing you out.
Memorial was rocking last time Michigan came to town. That game has to be right up there on the all time kick in the dick games.

I was at that game in AA, the only Husker fans in sight
Mich fans couldn’t stop explaining their traditions, what the song meant, where the bathrooms were, etc.
The literal opposite of hostile even as we shoved it down their throat

For being huge, the stadium looks small, like you said, horizontal and it looks like it was built into the ground, it is hard to explain.
It is not loud.
NU can get really loud but there are still a ton of old fans that just sit there the entire time.
I was talking about the games in Lincoln, but I have heard the same thing you mentioned about the Big House and their old fans. Heard the tailgating was top notch though. Stadium is big but the seats are not steep and they draw the crowd out away from the field limiting the noise there.

Michigan’s big house is also known as the quietest 100k people you’ll ever met.
Nebraska home game’s definitely used to be much louder. This is because the fan base is getting much older. Sophomores in college were in 4th grade the last time Nebraska even finished the season in the AP top 25. None of the traditional students would have even been alive the last time we finished the season in the top 10. It’s hard to be crazy passionate about something that’s been really bad basically your whole life. And young adults are who get loud.
And this is why I roll my eyes when old people on this board say “give Matt a pass in 2023”. We have no more passes to give. We have to start creating Husker excitement in the youth again.

Can't wait until we can use the term trap game again and worry about playing down to competition, we still have a few more years of playing up to competition in order to win some games.

And in 2002, I believe, somebody threw a bottle of water at Colorado's fullback, Brandon Drumm.
